Orioles 7, Indians 0 at Baltimore (day game):
The Orioles became first club since the 1956 Indians to have three 20-game winners when Jim Palmer defeated the Indians, 7-0. The victory was the 20th for Palmer, who entered the charmed circle with teammates Mike Cuellar and Dave McNally, each of whom had won 23 games. Palmer allowed four hits. Mark Belanger drove in three runs with a triple and two singles.

Red Sox 3, Senators 1 at Boston (day game):
Ray Culp registered his 16th victory of the season for the Red Sox and the 100th of his major league career by defeating the Senators, 3-1. Two homers carried Culp to his triumph. After the Senators picked up their run in the fifth inning, Tony Conigliaro tied the score with a circuit clout in the Red Sox half. Reggie Smith singled in the seventh and Rico Petrocelli provided the game-winning poke.

Twins 8, White Sox 1 at Chicago (day game):
With Bert Blyleven pitching a three-hitter, the Twins beat the White Sox, 8-1, and reduced their magic number to three for clinching the West division title. The Twins' attack in support of their rookie included a homer by Paul Ratliff and three hits apiece by Cesar Tovar, Tony Oliva and Jim Holt. The White Sox scored in the second inning on a double by Bill Melton and a single by Ed Herrmann.

Yankees 5, Tigers 1 at Detroit (day game):
The Yankees completed the sweep of the three-game series with the Tigers, posting a 5-1 victory behind the three-hit hurling of Steve Kline. The Yankees counted twice in the first inning on a run-scoring single by Danny Cater and a passed ball. The Tigers picked up their lone tally in the second on a triple by Norm Cash and sacrifice fly by Dalton Jones. A homer by Roy White in the third and another by Ron Woods the in sixth, after John Ellis had doubled, iced the decision.

Brewers 4, Royals 3 at Milwaukee (day game):
A theft of home on a double steal and a successful squeeze bunt were among the Brewers' accomplishments in a 4-3 victory over the the Royals. After the Brewers picked up a run in the first inning, Phil Roof was safe on an error in the fifth and Tommy Harper tripled. Mike Hegan walked and the pair then executed a double steal, Harper scoring. The Brewers added what proved to be the winning run in the sixth on a double by Bob Burda, a sacrifice and a squeeze bunt by Roof, scoring pinch-runner Russ Snyder. The Royals bunched two walks and three singles for their runs in the seventh.

Angels 4, A's 2 at Oakland (day game):
Sparked by Alex Johnson's third hit of the game, the Angels broke a tie with two runs in the ninth inning and defeated the Athletics, 4-2. Reggie Jackson homered in the sixth to give the A's a 2-1 lead, but Johnson tied the score with a round-tripper in the seventh. After hitting his single in the ninth, Johnson counted on singles by Jim Spencer and Bill Voss. An infield hit by Doug Griffin added an extra run to clinch the 21st victory for Clyde Wright, who needed relief help from Mel Queen in the A's half.

Braves 11, Reds 2 at Atlanta (day game):
After giving up two hits and two runs in the first inning, Ron Reed yielded only two more hits over the rest of the route and pitched the Braves to an 11-2 victory the over Reds. The Braves broke the game wide open with five runs in the second. Reed walked with the bases loaded to force in the first run. Ralph Garr doubled to drive in two. After the sacks were filled again, Rico Carty walked to force in a run and Orlando Cepeda hit a sacrifice fly for the fifth tally of the stanza. The Braves also counted twice more in the game on bases-loaded passes.

Dodgers 7, Astros 6 at Los Angeles (day game):
The Dodgers, who rallied to tie the score in the ninth inning, came from behind again in the 14th to beat the Astros, 7-6. With Willie Davis contributing a homer, the Dodgers held an early lead before the Astros forged ahead with three runs in the ninth. Doug Rader, who had four RBIs for the game, knocked in two runs with a single and scored the go-ahead tally on a double by Johnny Edwards. In the Dodgers' half, a double by Tom Haller, safe bunt by Bill Russell, and sacrifice fly by Jim Lefebvre sent the game into overtime. The Astros broke the tie in the 14th with singles by Larry Howard and Hector Torres and a grounder by Joe Morgan. The Dodgers then came back with a triple by Billy Grabarkewitz, scoring Lefebvre, and a single by Manny Mota to give reliever Ray Lamb his sixth straight victory.

Expos 6, Cubs 4 at Montreal (day game):
Three homers were not enough for the Cubs, who lost to the Expos, 6-4, and slipped two games behind the Pirates in the East division race. Billy Williams and Jim Hickman homered in the first inning, Williams' blow coming with Glenn Beckert on base, to give the Cubs a 3-0 lead. Steve Renko, the Expos' starting pitcher, hit for the circuit in the third, but Joe Pepitone restored the Cubs' three-run lead with a boundary belt in the seventh. The Expos picked up a run in their half on a single by Ron Fairly, double by John Bateman and sacrifice fly by Marv Staehle. Singles by Jim Gosger, Rusty Staub and Bob Bailey produced a run to open the Expos' rally in the eighth. Fergie Jenkins, making his first relief appearance of the season, was greeted with a double by Fairly, Staub and Bailey scoring to put the Expos ahead. Gary Sutherland then singled for an insurance run.

[DH] Mets 4, Pirates 1 (day game) / Pirates 9, Mets 5 at New York (day game):
The Pirates, who were held to two hits by Jerry Koosman and lost the opener of a doubleheader, 4-1, came back to beat the Mets in the nightcap, 9-5, in 10 innings. As a result of the split, the Pirates boosted their lead to two games over the Cubs in the East division race, while the Mets remained 3½ games in arrears. Koosman retired the first 15 batters before Jose Pagan led off the sixth inning with a homer for the Pirates' run. The Mets scored once in the third when Tommie Agee was hit by a pitch, Wayne Garrett singled and Cleon Jones lofted a sacrifice fly. A walk, a double by Ken Boswell and single by Bud Harrelson added a pair in the fourth and Donn Clendenon wrapped up the Mets' victory with a homer in the eighth. In the second game, the Pirates built up a 5-2 lead, but the Mets got a homer from Boswell in the sixth and tied the score in the seventh with a double by Jones, a walk and singles by Ron Swoboda and Harrelson. Willie Stargell shattered the tie with a homer in the 10th. Manny Sanguillen singled and was sacrificed to second. Dean Chance made his first appearance for the Mets and walked Dave Cash intentionally. Gene Alley tripled, driving in two runs, and scored himself on a squeeze bunt by Dave Giusti.

Phillies 7, Cardinals 4 at St. Louis (day game):
The Phillies erupted for three runs in the 10th inning and defeated the Cardinals, 7-4, to sweep the three-game series. Steve Carlton was saved from being the Cardinals' first 20-game loser in 50 years when his teammates rallied for three runs in the eighth and one in the ninth to tie the score at 4-4. In the 10th, with Harry Parker on the mound, Larry Bowa beat out a bunt and raced from first to third when Tony Taylor grounded to Joe Torre. Tom Hilgendorf replaced Parker and walked Don Money intentionally. Jim Hutto wrecked the move with a double, scoring Bowa. Ron Stone followed with a sacrifice fly to plate Money. Hutto also scored when Ed Crosby booted a grounder by Byron Browne.
