Today's scores and summaries:
Senators 8, A's 0 at Washington (day game):
A crowd of 45,061 congregated in Washington and witnessed an 8-0 victory by the Senators at the expense of the A's in the American League's first game. The Senators, who had lost eight straight openers since the John F. Kennedy days of 1962, won this one with the rooting help of an Army master sergeant instead of President Nixon. Daniel Pitzer, a master sergeant and former prisoner of war in Vietnam, threw out the ceremonial first ball as a stand-in for the chief executive. The victory also snapped a 14-game losing streak the Senators compiled in the final days of the 1970 season. Dick Bosman pitched a six-hitter and was in command thruout. He allowed only two runners to get as far as third and twice induced Oakland hitters to ground into double plays. He also drew walks that led to scoring innings. Errors by the A's also paved the way for Washington's victory. Two errors by shortstop Bert Campaneris led to a pair of runs in both the first and second innings.
Braves 7, Reds 4 at Cincinnati (day game):
The traditional National League opener in Cincinnati saw the Braves come to life in the eighth and ninth innings and beat the Reds, 7-4, before 51,702 fans. Third baseman Woody Woodward of Cincinnati committed three errors. His third error enabled Atlanta to snap a 4-4 tie in the eighth inning after Felix Millan led off with a triple. Ninth inning singles by Orlando Cepeda and Clete Boyer delivered a pair of runs. Cecil Upshaw, who relieved Phil Niekro in the sixth and blanked the Reds over the final three innings, picked up the victory. Reds' starter Gary Nolan was rocked for four runs in the second on Hal King's double, singles by Millan and Marty Perez, a walk, a two-base error by left fielder Bernie Carbo ard a single by Sonny Jackson.
Astros 5, Dodgers 2 at Houston (night game):
Led by Denis Menke, who drove in three runs with a triple and a groundout, the Astros defeated the Dodgers, 5-2. Larry Dierker, a 16-game winner last year, scattered 10 hits in going the route for Houston's victory. Menke's triple -- a liner that looked like a single until it bounced off Willie Davis' glove and rolled to the warning track -- drove in two runs in the third inning. It stretched a 2-1 Houston lead into a 4-2 margin. Cesar Cedeno had led off the third with a double and Joe Morgan walked. Bob Watson then forced Cedeno at third to bring up Menke.
