Today's scores and summaries:

Red Sox 3, Yankees 1 at Boston (day game):
Ray Culp yielded only five hits and pitched the Red Sox to a 3-1 victory over the Yankees before an opening-day crowd of 34,517 at Fenway Park in near-freezing weather. Right fielder Reggie Smith helped save the game in the eighth inning. When Horace Clarke singled with the bases loaded, Danny Cater scored from third base, but Smith threw out Jim Lyttle, who also tried to cross the plate from second.

Royals 4, Angels 1 at California (night game):
Manager Bob Lemon's choice of Dick Drago as the Royals' opening-game pitcher paid off when the righthander tossed a six-hitter and beat the Angels, 4-1. The victory was Drago's third over the Angels without a defeat since his arrival with the Royals in 1969. Wright, the Angels' 22-game winner last season, was kayoed in the sixth inning, disappointing the crowd of 24,434.

Tigers 8, Indians 2 at Detroit (day game):
The largest opening-game crowd in Detroit's history, 54,089, saw the Tigers defeat the Indians, 8-2, in 47-degree weather. Jim Northrup, playing first base for the first time in his career, batted in two runs with a triple in the fourth inning and scored himself on a single by Willie Horton. Steve Hargan pitched for the Indians in the absence of Sam McDowell, who was called home by a death in his family.

Brewers 7, Twins 2 at Minnesota (day game):
With the temperature at 53 degrees, only 18,823 were in the stands as the Twins opened their home season at the earliest date in their history and lost to the Brewers, 7-2. The previous earliest lidlifter was April 11, 1970. Every Brewer participated in the 12-hit attack. Andy Kosco led the way, driving in four runs with a homer, grounder and double.

Cubs 2, Cardinals 1 at Chicago (day game):
Breaking up a pitchers' duel in Fergie Jenkins' favor, Billy Williams homered off Bob Gibson in the 10th inning to give the Cubs a 2-1 victory over the Cardinals before an opening-day crowd of 41,121. Joe Torre homered for the Cardinals' run to tie the score in the seventh. The game was played in 40-degree weather with a strong wind blowing in from center field.

Dodgers 2, Astros 0 at Houston (night game):
Bill Buckner smashed his first major league homer and Claude Osteen pitched a four-hitter as the Dodgers defeated the Astros, 2-0. Buckner's belt followed a single by Willie Davis in the fourth inning.

Mets 4, Expos 2 at New York (day game):
Winning an opener at Shea Stadium for the first time in their history, the Mets defeated the Expos, 4-2, in a game called with two out in the home half of the fifth inning after the 40-mile wind turned a steady rain into sleet. The bad weather held the crowd to 26,062. Tom Seaver, who outpitched Carl Morton, allowed only four hits, but two of his four walks led to Expos' runs on a single by Ron Fairly in the third inning. Donn Clendenon and Jerry Grote, who had two hits apiece, each drove in one run and scored one to make the Mets' victory possible.

Pirates 4, Phillies 2 at Pittsburgh (day game):
Spring practice at bunting paid off for Dock Ellis, who plated one run with a squeeze and set up two others with sacrifices while pitching the Pirates to a 4-2 victory over the Phillies. A crowd of 39,712 turned out for the Pirates' lidlifter in windy, 39-degree weather. Chris Short, who pitched for the Phillies, suffered his first loss in six opening-day starts over the past seven years.

Giants 4, Padres 0 at San Diego (night game):
Willie Mays, swinging at the first pitch thrown to him in the first inning, clubbed a homer to start the Giants off to a 4-0 victory over the Padres behind the five-hit pitching of Juan Marichal. The crowd of 34,554 at the Padres' opener was the largest for any game in the club's history.
