Today's scores and summaries:

Orioles 3, Senators 2 at Baltimore (day game):
Frank Robinson, who was on the trading block all winter, hit a tie-breaking double in the fifth inning to enable the world champion Orioles to start the season with a 3-2 victory over the Senators before a crowd of 36,423. Singles by Davey Johnson and Boog Powell preceded Robinson's decisive double.

Angels 7, Royals 3 at California (night game):
Helping himself, Tom Murphy batted in two runs with a double and a single and also scored two runs to account for the Angels' 7-3 victory over the Royals. Murphy had assistance from his catcher, Jerry Moses, who rapped three hits and crossed the plate on Murphy's double in the fourth inning and his single in the sixth.

Twins 4, Brewers 0 at Minnesota (day game):
Bert Blyleven, The Sporting News' choice as A. L. Rookie Pitcher of the Year in 1970, thumbed his nose at the so-called sophomore jinx by hurling the Twins to a 4-0 victory over the Brewers. Harmon Killebrew smashed a homer after a single by Tony Oliva in the first inning and the Twins added an unearned run in the same stanza to ease the way for Blyleven.

[DH] White Sox 6, A's 5 (day game) / White Sox 12, A's 4 at Oakland (day game):
The White Sox, who won only one of 21 doubleheaders in 1970, started the season by sweeping a pair from the Athletics. 6-5 and 12-4, to disappoint the Oakland opening-day crowd of 23,823. In the first game, the White Sox scored the tying and winning runs in the seventh inning on a pinch-single by Rich McKinney and an error by Rick Monday when the ball got past him in center field. Bill Melton, who hit a two-run homer, came back with a grand-slam to lead the attack of the White Sox in the second game.

Cardinals 14, Cubs 3 at Chicago (day game):
The Cardinals capitalized on five errors and scored nine unearned runs in breezing to a 14-3 victory over the Cubs. Jose Cardenal and Joe Hague each batted in four runs. Steve Carlton, a Cardinal disappointment last season, pitched the route on an eight-hitter, including a two-run homer by Billy Williams.

Braves 2, Reds 1 at Cincinnati (night game):
After the Braves were held to only one hit in the first six innings, Hank Aaron smashed a homer to spark a 2-1 victory over the Reds. Following Aaron's drive that tied the score, Hal King doubled. Felix Millan drew an intentional pass and Clete Boyer singled to drive in the deciding marker.

Astros 2, Dodgers 1 at Houston (night game):
Jesus Alou, who entered the game in the second inning after Jim Wynn hurt his back, collected three hits to lead the Astros to a 2-1 victory over the Dodgers. A single by Alou paved the way for the Astros' first run in the sixth. After Bob Watson forced Alou, Denis Menke drove in a run with a double. In the eighth, Cesar Cedeno reached second base when Bill Russell dropped his pop fly in short center field and scored the winning run when Alou singled.

Giants 7, Padres 3 at San Diego (night game):
Homers by Willie Mays, Ken Henderson and Dick Dietz featured the Giants' support of Gaylord Perry, who pitched a four-hitter and beat the Padres, 7-3. Mays' homer was his second of the season and 630th of his career. Nate Colbert hit two homers for the Padres.
