Today's scores and summaries:

Royals 3, Angels 2 at California (night game):
The Royals took advantage of errors to score all their runs in a 3-2 victory over the Angels. Mike Hedlund, who was the winner, batted in one tainted tally with a single in the second inning and Cookie Rojas accounted for two more with a bases-loaded double in the third. Andy Messersmith was the loser, although hitting a homer in his own behalf.

Indians 3, Red Sox 2 at Cleveland (day game):
Gomer Hodge, the Indians' 27-year-old rookie infielder, knocked in two runs with a two-out single in the ninth inning to beat the Red Sox, 3-2. Hodge entered the game as a pinch-hitter for Eddie Leon in the eighth and doubled and scored the Indians' first run on a single by John Lowenstein. Remaining in the game at second base, Hodge came through with his winning hit in the ninth. The Indians' home opener drew a crowd of 40,462.

Astros 7, Cubs 3 at Houston (night game):
Jack Hiatt, playing against his former Chicago teammates, rapped two run-scoring doubles as the batterymate for Jack Billingham, who pitched the Astros to a 7-3 victory over the Cubs. Jesus Alou also drove in two runs with a pair of singles. Billy Williams hit his third homer in as many games for the Cubs, connecting with a man on base in the ninth inning.

Expos 6, Mets 2 at New York (day game):
With principal batting support from catcher John Bateman, who drove in three runs, Steve Renko pitched the Expos to a 6-2 victory over the Mets. Bateman got his first RBI with an infield out in the first inning when the Expos scored three runs. Then, in the seventh, when the Expos added their three other runs, Bateman batted in a pair with a single.

Pirates 2, Phillies 0 at Pittsburgh (night game):
Willie Stargell batted in two runs with a double in the sixth inning to enable Luke Walker to pitch the Pirates to a 2-0 victory over the Phillies.

Padres 7, Giants 6 at San Diego (night game):
Although Willie Mays smashed a grand-slam for his third homer in as many games, the Giants lost to the Padres, 7-6. The Padres won with a three-run rally in the ninth inning. After singles by on Mason, Dave Campbell, Larry Stahl and Cito Gaston tied the score, Nate Colbert, who had struck out in three previous trips to the plate, lashed a long sacrifice fly to admit the winning run.
