Orioles 2, Tigers 1 at Baltimore (day game):
Davey Johnson supplied the Orioles' winning run for the second straight game, hitting a two-out single in the ninth inning to beat the Tigers, 2-1. Frank Robinson singled with one away, took third on a two-out single by Brooks Robinson and scored when Johnson came through with his clutch hit.

Twins 5, White Sox 3 at Chicago (day game):
Homers by Tony Oliva and Paul Powell provided the Twins with their winning margin in a 5-3 victory over the White Sox. Oliva accounted for the deciding run in the fifth inning and Powell added an insurance run in the eighth with his first major league hit.

Indians 11, Red Sox 10 at Cleveland (day game):
Although Luis Aparicio hit the second grand-slam homer of his major league career and drove in two more runs with a double, the Red Sox lost a slugfest to the Indians, 11-10. Ray Fosse batted in two runs for the Indians with a homer and Larry Brown accounted for five RBIs with a grounder, a double and a single. Rookie Chuck Machemehl saved the game after relieving with the potential tying run on third and one out in the eighth inning.

Brewers 4, Angels 3 at Milwaukee (day game):
Playing before a home-opening crowd of 40.566, the Brewers scored on a bases-loaded pass in the eighth inning to defeat the Angels, 4-3. Tommy Harper walked, Bernie Smith singled, Dave May sacrificed and Andy Kosco drew an intentional pass to load the bases. Mel Queen relieved Clyde Wright and struck out Bill Voss, but then walked Roberto Pena on six pitches to force in the winning run.

A's 5, Royals 4 at Oakland (day game):
The Athletics, who disposed of Tommy Davis last summer, got their first dividend for picking him up again this spring when the former N. L. batting champion drove in two runs with a pinch-double in the ninth inning to defeat the Royals, 5-4. With one out, Dick Green singled and Steve Hovley walked. Bert Campaneris was retired, but Davis then batted for Bob Locker and came through with his winning two-bagger.

Yankees 6, Senators 0 at Washington (day game):
The Yankees gained their first victory of season, after two defeats, when Mel Stottlemyre pitched a three-hitter and shut out the Senators, 6-0. Stottlemyre also helped himself with a run-scoring single in the Yankees' 13-hit attack.

Braves 5, Pirates 4 at Atlanta (night game):
Willie Stargell smashed three homers and drove in four runs for the Pirates, but the Braves were able to gain a 5-4 victory in 12 innings. Orlando Cepeda batted in the Braves' first two runs with a sacrifice fly and a double. Hank Aaron tied the score at 4-4 with a two-run homer in the ninth. Ralph Garr tripled in the 12th for his fourth hit of the game. After two intentional passes loaded the bases, Hal King singled to drive in the winning run.

Astros 2, Cubs 1 at Houston (night game):
Fergie Jenkins, who was on the verge of a 1-0 victory, wrecked himself with a balk and an error in the ninth inning to enable the Astros to defeat the Cubs, 2-1. Cesar Cedeno singled to open the stanza and both Cesar Geronimo and Doug Rader walked. Jenkins then balked, allowing Cedeno to score. With runners at second and third, Jenkins passed Johnny Edwards intentionally. Roge rMetzger then popped to Jenkins, who whirled and threw wildly past third base, in an attempt to complete the double play, and Geronimo scored the winning run on the error.

Dodgers 9, Padres 2 at Los Angeles (night game):
The hitting of Bill Sudakis and Willie Davis helped carry the Dodgers to a 9-2 victory over the Padres behind the three-hit pitching of Claude Osteen. Sudakis cracked a pair of solo homers and Davis drove in three runs with two doubles and a single. Osteen allowed only one hit until the ninth inning when Dave Campbell and Nate Colbert homered for the Padres.

Mets 3, Reds 2 at New York (day game):
A wild pitch by Wayne Granger with the bases loaded and two out in the 11th inning allowed Donn Clendenon to score and gave the Mets a 3-2 victory over the Reds. Granger had a two-strike count on Jerry Grote when his inside pitch shot pass catcher Johnny Bench and rolled to the screen. After the game, Bench said he signaled for a fastball, but Granger missed the sign and threw a curve instead.

Phillies 4, Expos 1 at Philadelphia (day game):
Playing their first game in new Veterans Stadium, the Phillies delighted the crowd of 55,352 by defeating the Expos, 4-1. Don Money homered in the sixth inning to tie the score at 1-1 and the Phillies then loaded the bases and pushed over two more runs on a single by Roger Freed and sacrifice fly by Tim McCarver. Larry Bowa tripled in the seventh and scored the final run on a sacrifice fly by Money.

Giants 6, Cardinals 4 at St. Louis (day game):
Willie Mays hit his fourth homer in four games and Dick Dietz also connected for the circuit, both blows coming with a man on base, to pace the Giants to a 6-4 victory over the Cardinals before an opening-day crowd of 26,841 in Busch Stadium. Frank Reberger, who was the winner with the help of Jerry Johnson, singled home the Giants' fifth and deciding run in the sixth inning. Joe Torre hit a two-run homer for the Cardinals.
