Today's scores and summaries:

[DH] Tigers 5, Orioles 4 (day game) / Orioles 9, Tigers 3 at Baltimore (night game):
Scattering seven hits, Dave McNally pitched the Orioles to a 9-3 triumph in the nightcap of a doubleheader after the Tigers won the opener, 5-4, in 11 innings, on a homer by Bill Freehan. McNally breezed to his second straight victory after being staked to a five-run lead in the first two innings.

Twins 6, White Sox 0 at Chicago (day game):
Although tagged for 11 hits, Jim Kaat was effective with men on base and pitched the Twins to a 6-0 victory over the White Sox. Kaat also helped his own cause at bat, doubling and scoring the Twins' first run in the third inning and driving in two more with a bases-loaded single in the fourth.

Indians 7, Red Sox 2 at Cleveland (day game):
Ex-Dodger Alan Foster made his debut with the Indians and allowed only three hits in a 7-2 victory over the Red Sox. Foster was wrapped in a 2-2 duel with Gary Peters until the eighth inning when he doubled to spark a five-run outburst by the Indians. Although chary with hits, Foster had control trouble, walking nine, and was lifted after passing a pair with one out in the ninth. Chuck Machemehl retired the last two batters.

Brewers 3, Angels 0 at Milwaukee (day game):
Marty Pattin gained his second straight victory for the Brewers, allowing only three singles while beating the Angels, 3-0. A double by Dave May and single by Andy Kosco in the first inning gave Pattin the only run he needed. However, the Brewers added another on singles by Ellie Rodriguez and Ted Kubiak around a wild pitch in the second, and wound up their scoring with a homer by Bernie Smith in the eighth.

Royals 10, A's 5 at Oakland (night game):
The Royals piled up 15 hits, including a two-run single by Ed Kirkpatrick and two-run double by pinch-hitter Bobby Knoop, to defeat the Athletics, 10-5. The A's were held to five hits, but they included homers by Rick Monday and Dick Green. Ted Abernathy pitched hitless ball in the last three innings for the Royals.

[DH] Yankees 1, Senators 0 (day game) / Senators 4, Yankees 3 at Washington (day game):
Curt Blefary hit an inside-the-park homer to win the first game of a doubleheader for the Yankees, 1-0, but the right fielder's error enabled the Senators to come back and take the second game, 4-3. Steve Kline pitched a shutout for Yankees, his first in the major leagues. The Senators, who had been held scoreless for 23 straight innings by Yankee pitchers, broke the drouth in the nightcap when Elliott Maddox singled and Frank Howard doubled for a run in the sixth. After two walks, Bernie Allen singled, driving in two runs to tie the score at 3-3, and when Blefary bobbled the ball, Richie Scheinblum scored from first base with the winning tally.

Braves 3, Pirates 1 at Atlanta (day game):
After being held to one hit by Dock Ellis in the first six innings, the Braves rallied to defeat the Pirates, 3-1. Orlando Cepeda tied the score at 1-1 with a homer in the seventh. Jim Nash singled in the eighth and counted the tie-breaking run on a triple by Sonny Jackson. Ralph Garr hit a sacrifice fly to add the final tally.

Astros 7, Cubs 4 at Houston (day game):
After the Cubs scored three runs in the first inning, the Astros came back with four in their half and went on to gain a 7-4 victory. Cesar Cedeno, who singled and scored in the first, drove in two runs with a triple in the fourth and knocked in the Astros' last marker with a sacrifice fly in the sixth.

Padres 9, Dodgers 7 at Los Angeles (day game):
Nate Colbert hit his fourth and fifth homers of the season to help power the Padres to a 9-7 victory over the Dodgers. The slugging first baseman drove in five runs with his round-trippers in the first and third innings and added a sixth RBI, tying the Padres' club record, with an infield out in the fifth.

Mets 1, Reds 0 at New York (day game):
Breaking up a scoreless duel, Jerry Grote homered in the 11th inning to give the Mets a 1-0 victory over the Reds. The defeat was the fourth straight for the Reds and the third for Wayne Granger, who was on the mound in relief when Grote connected for the circuit.

Phillies 11, Expos 4 at Philadelphia (day game):
A grand slam by Roger Freed for the rookie outfielder's first major league homer helped the Phillies defeat the Expos, 11-4. In the fifth inning, after a double by Willie Montanez and two walks, the Expos lifted Carl Morton and brought in Howie Reed, who was the victim of the grand slam on his first pitch. Freed drove in another run with a single in the sixth.

[DH] Cardinals 4, Giants 2 (day game) / Giants 7, Cardinals 2 at St. Louis (day game):
The Cardinals won the first game of a doubleheader with Bob Gibson pitching, 4-2, and the Giants came back behind Juan Marichal to take the second game, 7-2. Gibson's decision was his sixth straight over the Giants since September 17, 1968. The Giants' runs counted on consecutive homers by George Foster and Bobby Bonds in the eighth inning. The Cardinals had successive homers by Joe Torre and Jose Cardenal for their runs off Marichal in the sixth inning. Willie Mays, who sat out the opener, was stopped on his homer streak in the nightcap, but the Giants' superstar smashed a triple and double to continue his hot hitting.
