Today's scores and summaries:

Angels 3, White Sox 2 at Chicago (day game):
Wilbur Wood, making his first start for the White Sox since August 10, 1968, after 176 relief appearances, yielded only three hits in 7 2/3 innings but lost to the Angels, 3-2. Wood, leading, 2-1, issued his only walk of the game to Jim Spencer to open the eighth and then retired the next two batters, but Jim Fregosi came up as a pinch-hitter and doubled to drive in pinch-runner Roger Repoz. Vicente Romo relieved Wood and was greeted with a single by Sandy Alomar, scoring pinch-runner Clyde Wright with the winning tally.

Twins 2, Royals 0 at Kansas City (night game):
Posting his second straight shutout, Bert Blyleven allowed only three hits and pitched the Twins to a 2-0 victory to disappoint the Royals' opening-night crowd of 32,728, largest turnout in the club's three-year history.

A's 5, Brewers 0 at Milwaukee (day game):
Although forced to wait out a 52-minute rain delay in the fifth inning, Rollie Fingers remained hot and pitched the Athletics to a 5-0 victory over the Brewers.

Red Sox 10, Senators 7 at Washington (night game):
Sparked by Ray Culp, who batted better than he pitched, the Red Sox defeated the Senators, 10-7. A single by Culp with the bases loaded drove in the first two of six runs by the Red Sox in a seventh-inning uprising. Rico Petrocelli capped the stanza with a homer. Billy Conigliaro homered and Culp contributed another single and scored in the eighth when the Red Sox added three runs for their winning margin. Culp, who gave up 15 hits, was knocked out in the ninth as the Senators rallied for five runs. Ken Tatum struck out Toby Harrah to end the game.

Reds 7, Braves 3 at Atlanta (night game):
Johnny Bench found the homer range for the first time this season, smashing two round-trippers and driving in four runs, to lead the Reds to a 7-3 victory over the Braves. The triumph was the first of the season for the Reds after four losses. Jim McGlothlin, who was the winner, chipped in with the second homer of his major league career. The first one also came in Atlanta last year.

Dodgers 4, Cubs 3 at Los Angeles (night game):
Dick Allen hit his first homer in a Dodgers' uniform to mark a 4-3 victory over the Cubs. Steve Garvey also hit for the circuit and Jim Lefebvre drove in the Dodgers' two other runs with a triple. Cubs' catcher Randy Hundley, pinch-hitting in his first appearance of the season, reinjured his right knee and had to be carried off the field.

Pirates 4, Phillies 3 at Philadelphia (night game):
A walk to Dave Cash and singles by Richie Hebner and Willie Stargell in the 11th inning gave the Pirates a 4-3 victory over the Phillies.

Giants 5, Padres 0 at San Francisco (day game):
Staked to a five-run lead in the second inning, Gaylord Perry pitched the Giants to a 5-0 victory over the Padres. Perry was so effective, yielding only three hits and striking out 11, that the Giants' outfield made just one putout. Al Gallagher hit a two-run homer in the Giants' big inning.

Cardinals 5, Astros 4 at St. Louis (night game):
The relief pitching of Frank Linzy, who retired the side after coming in with two men on base and none out in the ninth inning, saved the Cardinals' 5-4 victory over the Astros. Ted Simmons, who had a single, double and triple, batted in what proved to be the Cardinals' winning run with his three-bagger in the sixth on a high fly that Bob Watson and Cesar Cedeno let drop between them.
