Today's scores and summaries:

Angels 3, White Sox 1 at Chicago (day game):
After collecting only three hits in the first nine innings, the Angels bunched four for two runs in the 10th to defeat the White Sox, 3-1. A double by Ken McMullen, infield hit by Syd O'Brien and single by Billy Cowan produced the tie-breaking tally. Following a walk that loaded the bases, Alex Johnson hit a slow roller with two out and when the attempted force at second failed, the Angels picked up an extra run. Johnson was credited with a hit.

Royals 5, Twins 3 at Kansas City (night game):
A two-run single by Lou Piniella in the seventh inning enabled the Royals to defeat the Twins, 5-3, in a game that saw seven batters hit by pitched balls, tying the A. L. record set by the Tigers and Senators August 24, 1914. The Royals' first three runs scored in the fifth on two walks, a double by Paul Schaal, two more passes and an infield out.

A's 2, Brewers 0 at Milwaukee (day game):
Vida Blue posted his second straight shutout, allowing only two hits and pitching the Athletics to a 2-0 victory over the Brewers. Joe Rudi scored both runs, crossing the plate each time on hits by Don Mincher.

Yankees 5, Tigers 2 at New York (day game):
Playing their home opener, the Yankees attracted 34,745, their largest first-day crowd since 1966, and rewarded the turnout by defeating the Tigers, 5-2. Stan Bahnsen, although tagged for 11 hits, scattered them effectively and also joined in the Yankees' attack with a run-scoring triple.

Red Sox 5, Senators 3 at Washington (night game):
Duane Josephson and Carl Yastrzemski clouted homers off Denny McLain to help the Red Sox defeat the Senators, 5-3. Josephson connected with a man on base in the second and Yastrzemski added a solo swat in the third. A single by George Scott, double by Josephson and sacrifice fly by Billy Conigliaro produced another marker in the fourth, and the final Red Sox run crossed the plate on a balk by McLain in the fifth.

Reds 5, Braves 4 at Atlanta (night game):
The clutch pitching of Joe Gibbon, who worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the eighth inning, saved the Reds' 5-4 victory over the Braves. After the Braves scored three runs, Gibbon relieved and issued an intentional pass to fill the sacks, but then induced Hal King to ground into a rally-killing double play. Johnny Bench hit his third homer in two days for the Reds and Hank Aaron smashed one for the Braves.

Cubs 3, Dodgers 2 at Los Angeles (night game):
The Cubs handed Bill Singer his third straight defeat by coming from behind to edge the Dodgers, 3-2. The Dodgers picked up their runs in the first inning, but the Cubs pulled even with the aid of a homer by Joe Pepitone and then scored the deciding run in the eighth on a pass to Jose Ortiz, a sacrifice and a single by Don Kessinger.

Expos 4, Mets 1 at Montreal (day game):
John Bateman hit Montreal's first homer of the season as the Expos made a successful home debut before 21,996 by defeating the Mets, 4-1. Bob Bailey had a hand in the three other Expos' runs, driving in one, scoring another and setting up the final marker with a single.

Pirates 9, Phillies 3 at Philadelphia (night game):
Five homers, including one by Nelson Briles, who pitched in relief and gained his first victory in a Pittsburgh uniform, powered the Pirates past the Phillies, 9-3. Other round-trippers were hit by Jackie Hernandez, Manny Sanguillen, Bob Robertson and Willie Stargell. Sanguillen connected with two aboard in the fifth inning and Hernandez broke a 3-3 tie with a three-run smash in the eighth.

Astros 8, Cardinals 4 at St. Louis (day game):
The Astros exploded for five runs with two out in the ninth inning and defeated the Cardinals, 8-4, in a "Businessmen's Special" game which started at 12:30 p.m. on a rainy day and drew only 5,605, the smallest crowd in the history of Busch Memorial Stadium. In the ninth, after three walks loaded the bases, the Cardinals called on southpaw George Brunet to face two lefthanded hitters, Joe Morgan and Norm Miller, but the move failed when Morgan singled for two runs and Miller homered for three more.
