Today's scores and summaries:

Brewers 2, White Sox 0 at Chicago (day game):
Three pitchers -- Jim Slaton, Marcelino Lopez and Ken Sanders -- combined on a four-hitter as the Brewers defeated the White Sox, 2-0. A single by Rick Auerbach for his first major league hit, a pass to Danny Walton and double by Tommy Harper produced the Brewers' first run in the seventh inning. The other tally counted in the ninth on two walks and a single by Ted Savage.

Orioles 3, Indians 0 at Cleveland (day game):
Mike Cuellar pitched a shutout in his first complete game of the season and Boog Powell smashed a two-run homer as the Orioles defeated the Indians, 3-0.

Angels 4, Royals 1 at Kansas City (night game):
A bases-loaded double by Tony Gonzalez in the seventh inning brought the Angels a 4-1 victory over the Royals. After Jim Fregosi and Jim Spencer singled and Jerry Moses doubled in the seventh inning for the run that tied the score at 1-1, Sandy Alomar walked with two out to load the bases. Gonzalez then batted for Ken Berry and cleared the sacks with his two-bagger.

A's 6, Twins 1 at Minnesota (day game):
Diego Segui smashed a three-run homer and pitched the Athletics to a 6-1 victory over the Twins. Reggie Jackson clouted a pair of king-sized drives, one of 424 feet into the bullpen in right field and the other of 437 feet over the fence in right-center field.

Yankees 8, Tigers 4 at New York (day game):
Playing in his first game with the Yankees, Felipe Alou smashed a homer in the fourth inning to start the scoring in an 8-4 victory over the Tigers. After the drive by the former Athletics' outfielder, the Yankees added three more runs in the same stanza. Winning pitcher Fritz Peterson drove in one with a single and got credit for a second RBI by drawing a pass with the bases loaded in the sixth.

Senators 6, Red Sox 5 at Washington (night game):
The Senators, who were held scoreless on two hits through six innings and trailed by five runs, rallied in the seventh to edge the Red Sox, 6-5. A walk and singles by Joe Foy, Frank Howard and Richie Scheinblum produced the first two tallies and chased Mike Nagy. After committing an error that loaded the bases, Bobby Bolin walked Tommy McCraw and Elliott Maddox on eight straight pitches to force in two more runs. One out later, Tim Cullen singled off Bill Lee to drive in the tying and winning markers.

Reds 8, Braves 3 at Atlanta (night game):
The rebounding Reds, who had opened the season with four straight defeats, completed a sweep of the three-game series with the Braves by posting an 8-3 victory. Hal McRae doubled home two runs in the third inning when the Reds scored four times to break a 2-2 tie. Johnny Bench hit his fourth homer in three games, connecting with a man on base in the ninth. Hank Aaron hit two homers to account for all of the Braves' runs.

Cardinals 7, Dodgers 1 at Los Angeles (night game):
Jim Beauchamp and Lou Brock each rapped three hits, including a homer apiece, to pace the Cardinals to a 7-1 victory over the Dodgers.

Phillies 6, Pirates 5 at Philadelphia (night game):
Denny Doyle singled with the bases loaded in the eighth inning for his third hit of the game and drove in two runs to enable the Phillies to defeat the Pirates, 6-5. Willie Montanez and Deron Johnson opened the inning with singles and, with two out, moved into scoring position on a wild pitch by Dave Giusti. After an intentional pass to Tim McCarver, Doyle hit his single.

Giants 2, Astros 1 at San Francisco (day game):
A single by Tito Fuentes with two out in the 11th inning scored Frank Johnson and gave the Giants a 2-1 victory over the Astros. Dick Dietz led off with a single and was forced by Johnson, but when Roger Metzger threw wildly trying for a double play, Johnson advanced to second. After an intentional pass to Al Gallagher, Fuentes slashed his winning hit to center field.
