Today's scores and summaries:
Orioles 6, Yankees 1 at Baltimore (night game):
Pat Dobson, who was obtained from the Padres during the winter, gained his first victory in an Orioles' uniform, pitching the route to defeat the Yankees, 6-1. The Orioles broke a 1-1 tie with a three-run outburst in the sixth inning. Davey Johnson doubled to score Don Buford with the go-ahead tally. After an intentional pass to Boog Powell, Frank Robinson and Brooks Robinson drove in additional runs with singles.
A's 5, White Sox 4 at Chicago (night game):
A homer by Reggie Jackson in the 10th inning gave the Athletics a 5-4 victory over the White Sox, who absorbed their seventh straight defeat. The A's, who won their fifth game in a row, also had a two-run homer by Joe Rudi in the first inning and a solo swat by Rick Monday that tied the score at 4-4 in the ninth.
Red Sox 5, Tigers 3 at Detroit (day game):
Reggie Smith and Billy Conigliaro rapped three hits apiece to pace the Red Sox to a 5-3 victory over the Tigers. Conigliaro drove in a run with a single in the second inning and Smith homered in the fifth. With the Red Sox leading, 3-2, two walks and Conigliaro's third single loaded the bases in the eighth. Luis Aparicio laid down a squeeze bunt to plate one run and Smith accounted for another with a sacrifice fly. Al Kaline had three hits for the Tigers and scored their final run in the ninth.
Angels 4, Twins 1 at Minnesota (day game):
After pitching no-hit ball for 6 1/3 innings, Jim Perry gave up a single by Alex Johnson and then was knocked out in the eighth when the Angels scored three runs to defeat the Twins, 4-1. Jerry Moses and Tony Gonzalez singled in the eighth and Sandy Alomar tripled them home. A single by Jim Fregosi scored Alomar. When Johnson also singled, Perry was lifted.
Dodgers 6, Astros 5 at Los Angeles (night game):
A walk to Dick Allen and singles by Steve Garvey and Bill Buckner gave the Dodgers a run in the 10th inning to defeat the Astros, 6-5.
Mets 1, Pirates 0 at New York (day game):
In an overpowering display, Tom Seaver yielded only three hits, struck out 14 and pitched the Mets to a 1-0 victory over the Pirates. Donn Clendenon decided Seaver's duel with Dock Ellis by smashing a homer in the fourth inning to end a stretch of nine straight hitless times at bat for the Mets' slugger.
Braves 8, Phillies 7 at Philadelphia (night game):
Although scoring seven runs in the second inning, the Braves needed another tally on a wild pitch in the sixth to stagger past the Phillies, 8-7. The Braves sent 13 men to bat in their big inning and collected eight hits, including a pair of run-scoring singles by Earl Williams. Two walks and a sacrifice fly also figured in the stanza. The Braves' deciding run in the sixth counted on a single by Ralph Garr, a stolen base, an infield out and a wild pitch by Ken Reynolds.
Cardinals 7, Padres 1 at San Diego (night game):
Continuing his mastery of the Padres, Bob Gibson pitched the Cardinals to a 7-1 victory and also drove in three runs, two of them with a homer. The ace righthander's triumph was his seventh straight over the Padres without a loss in three seasons.
Giants 9, Cubs 0 at San Francisco (night game):
Juan Marichal pitched no-hit ball for eight innings and then shook off a pair of singles in the ninth to complete the Giants' 9-0 victory over the Cubs. Ken Rudolph spoiled Marichal's gem to lead off the ninth and pinch-hitter Jim Hickman followed with another hit. However, Marichal bore down and saved his shutout with the aid of a double play.
