Today's scores and summaries:

Red Sox 4, Indians 1 at Boston (day game):
Two-run doubles by Gary Peters and Reggie Smith in the fifth inning carried the Red Sox to a 4-1 victory over the Indians. Peters was knocked out in the sixth, but Ken Tatum saved his decision with 3 2/3 innings of hitless relief.

A's 4, Angels 0 at California (night game):
The Angels were stopped on their seven-game winning streak when they collected only three hits off Catfish Hunter and lost to the Athletics, 4-0. Sal Bando hit two homers and drove in three runs to co-star for the A's.

Tigers 7, Orioles 6 at Detroit (night game):
Jim Northrup, who homered with two men on base in the fifth inning, broke a 6-6 tie with a run-scoring single in the ninth to give the Tigers a 7-6 victory over the Orioles. Bill Freehan also homered for the Tigers, who built up a 6-0 lead before the Orioles rallied with the aid of a three-run double by Paul Blair. In the ninth, Dick McAuliffe walked, advanced to second after a long fly by Al Kaline and crossed the plate on Northrup's single.

White Sox 7, Brewers 1 at Milwaukee (day game):
Bart Johnson, who helped himself by driving in three runs, pitched the White Sox to a 7-1 victory over the Brewers. Johnson plated a pair with a double in the second inning and accounted for his third RBI with a grounder in the eighth.

Twins 5, Royals 4 at Minnesota (day game):
The Twins, who went into the ninth inning with a 5-1 lead, survived a three-run rally by the Royals to emerge with a 5-4 victory. Lou Piniella and Bob Oliver singled and Paul Schaal doubled for the first run in the Royals' uprising, knocking out Jim Perry. Ron Perranoski relieved and struck out Carl Taylor, but Jerry May followed with a two-run double. However, after Dennis Paepke walked, Freddie Patek grounded into a game-ending double play.

Senators 7, Yankees 2 at New York (day game):
Frank Howard hit his first homer in New York since September 3, 1967, to mark the Senators' 7-2 victory over the Yankees. The Nats' slugger walked and scored in the first inning and singled and scored again in the third before smashing his homer off Fritz Peterson in the fourth.

Cubs 3, Astros 1 at Chicago (day game):
Ron Santo homered after a single by Glenn Beckert in the fourth inning to enable the Cubs to end a four-game losing streak with a 3-1 victory over the Astros. Beckert, who had three hits, singled again in the sixth and was forced by Santo, who then scored the Cubs' final run on a triple by Joe Pepitone.

Reds 3, Mets 2 at Cincinnati (night game):
Two homers, one by Pete Rose in the first inning and the other by Johnny Bench with a man on base in the seventh, powered the Reds to a 3-2 victory over the Mets. Wayne Granger, who had lost three straight relief appearances, gained the decision with help from Clay Carroll, who snuffed out a Mets' threat with two men on base and none out in the ninth inning.

Phillies 1, Expos 0 at Montreal (day game):
A sacrifice fly by Roger Freed in the sixth inning produced the game's only run as the Phillies defeated the Expos, 1-0, in a duel between Chris Short and rookie Ernie McAnally, who was a loser in his first major league start. Larry Bowa walked in the sixth and stopped at second on a single by Don Money. After Willie Montanez sacrificed, Freed hit his decisive fly.

Braves 2, Pirates 0 at Pittsburgh (night game):
The shutout pitching of Phil Niekro and a homer by Hank Aaron combined to bring the Braves a 2-0 victory over the Pirates. Aaron homered in the first inning after Ralph Garr beat out an infield hit.

Dodgers 6, Padres 2 at San Diego (night game):
The Dodgers combined six hits and three walks for all their runs in the third inning to defeat the Padres, 6-2. Dick Allen singled with the bases loaded to account for two tallies and two more scored on an infield hit by Bill Russell.

Cardinals 2, Giants 1 at San Francisco (night game):
The tremendous relief pitching of Moe Drabowsky saved Reggie Cleveland's first major league victory as the Cardinals defeated Juan Marichal, 2-1, to snap the Giants' nine-game winning streak. In the ninth inning, Chris Speier singled and Willie Mays and Dick Dietz walked to load the bases with one away, but Drabowsky stepped into the hot spot and struck out both George Foster and Fran Healy.
