Today's scores and summaries:

A's 7, Angels 3 at California (night game):
The Athletics batted around in the fifth inning, scoring five runs, and made it easy for Vida Blue to defeat the Angels, 7-3. The A's loaded the bases on a single by Joe Rudi, double by Reggie Jackson and an intentional pass to Sal Bando. Rick Monday promptly singled, driving in Rudi and Jackson. The other runs followed on singles by Dave Duncan and Dick Green and a passed ball.

White Sox 4, Brewers 2 at Milwaukee (day game):
A three-run homer by Carlos May in the eighth inning carried the White Sox to a 4-2 victory over the Brewers. With one out, pinch-hitter Lee Maye singled and Lee Richard ran for him. After Ed Stroud flied out, Mike Andrews singled, setting the stage for May. The other White Sox run also came on a homer, Ed Herrmann hitting it in the second inning. Wilbur Wood, back in the bullpen for the White Sox, saved the game for Tom Bradley.

Astros 6, Cubs 1 at Chicago (day game):
Working his way out of trouble in the ninth inning, Larry Dierker pitched the Astros to a 6-1 victory over the Cubs. In the ninth, Glenn Beckert doubled, Billy Williams walked and Ron Santo singled to load the bases with none out. Joe Pepitone hit a sacrifice fly to produce the Cubs' run, but Jim Hickman fouled out and Hal Breeden struck out. Bob Watson homered with a man on base for the Astros.

Pirates 7, Braves 4 at Pittsburgh (night game):
Willie Stargell tied the major league record for the most homers in April, smashing his 10th of the month, to feature the Pirates' 7-4 victory over the Braves. Richie Hebner, who had gone 0-for-24, broke out of his slump with a single and two triples, driving in three runs.

Cardinals 5, Phillies 2 at St. Louis (night game):
In contrast to last season when Steve Carlton was 1-3 after his first four starts, the Cardinals' lefthander brought his record to 4-0 by defeating the Phillies, 5-2.
