Today's scores and summaries:

Red Sox 4, White Sox 2 at Boston (day game):
The Red Sox scored all their runs on three homers in defeating the White Sox, 4-2. After the White Sox picked up their tallies in the second inning, Rico Petrocelli tied the score with a smash in the fourth. George Scott and Billy Conigliaro then provided the winning margin with circuit clouts in the eighth.

Angels 7, Orioles 4 at California (night game):
Roger Repoz hit a grand-slam in the ninth inning to carry the Angels to a 7-4 victory over the Orioles. Mike Cuellar, who started for the Orioles, was lifted after Alex Johnson singled to open the ninth. Dick Hall failed in relief. Tony Conigliaro beat out an infield hit and, after Jim Fregosi sacrificed, Hall walked Ken McMullen intentionally, setting the stage for the slam.

Royals 6, Indians 0 at Kansas City (day game):
Posting his first major league shutout, Mike Hedlund yielded only three hits and pitched the Royals to a 6-0 victory over the Indians. Jerry May drove in three runs with a double and single and Lou Piniella accounted for two RBIs with a grounder and sacrifice fly.

Twins 11, Yankees 8 at New York (day game):
After failing three times to hold a three-run lead, including once in the 10th inning, the Twins broke away with three runs in the 11th to gain an 11-8 victory over the Yankees, who left 20 men on base during the game. The Twins took an 8-5 lead in the 10th, scoring on a wild pitch by Mike Kekich and a double by Leo Cardenas, but the Yankees rallied in their half with a homer by Roy White and a two-run single by Gene Michael. However, in the 11th, the Twins loaded the bases on walks to Cesar Tovar and Tony Oliva, around an error by Bill Burbach on a bunt by Rod Carew. Harmon Killebrew singled, driving in two runs, and the third tally counted on a sacrifice fly by Rick Renick.

A's 5, Tigers 4 at Oakland (day game):
Dick Green, who hit a three-run homer in the previous night's victory, smashed a grand slam as the Athletics extended their winning streak to seven games by defeating the Tigers, 5-4. Joe Coleman, who started for the Tigers, was removed in the sixth inning after issuing two passes. Tom Timmermann loaded the bases with another walk and then was the victim of Green's jackpot wallop. Catfish Hunter, who rapped three hits to go along with his pitching, kept the inning going with a single and, after a sacrifice, scored what proved to be the winning run on a single by Reggie Jackson. Norm Cash hit the 300th homer of his major league career for the Tigers.

Senators 5, Brewers 4 at Washington (night game):
A double by Tim Cullen and a single by Frank Howard in the ninth inning gave the Senators a 5-4 victory over the Brewers. Curt Flood, who had been benched because of a slump, got into the game as a late-inning replacement for Del Unser and singled to drive in the Senators' tying run in the eighth.

Padres 3, Braves 2 at Atlanta (night game):
The Padres broke their eight-game losing streak when Cito Gaston tripled and Ollie Brown beat out an infield hit in the eighth inning to defeat the Braves, 3-2. Chris Cannizzaro accounted for the Padres' other runs with a homer and a forceout.

Cubs 7, Mets 5 at Chicago (day game):
Tommie Agee hit the first grand-slam homer of his major league career, but the blow came too late to keep the Mets from losing to the Cubs, 7-5. Milt Pappas, who started for the Cubs, issued three passes before serving the gopher pitch to Agee in the seventh inning. Earl Stephenson relieved and checked the Mets on one hit in the last 2 1/3 innings. Ron Santo hit a two-run homer for the Cubs and also scored twice after drawing walks.

Dodgers 5, Reds 4 at Cincinnati (day game):
Pete Mikkelsen, relieving to face Johnny Bench with two men on base and two out in the ninth inning, struck out the slugger to save the Dodgers' 5-4 victory over the Reds. Bench had previously smashed a homer and two singles. The Dodgers, who had a three-run homer by Tom Haller, broke a 4-4 tie in the ninth. Haller walked and gave way to pinch-runner Bobby Valentine, who stole second and scored on a single by Manny Mota.

Expos 3, Astros 2 at Houston (night game):
Pitching out of a jam, Mike Marshall saved his second game in two nights and his fourth of the season as the Expos defeated the Astros, 3-2. The Expos scored what proved to be the deciding run in the ninth inning when Ron Brand singled with the bases loaded. In the Astros' half, Bob Watson singled for only the fourth hit off Steve Renko, but the Expos' starter was lifted for Marshall. Denis Menke greeted the change with a single. Doug Rader, attempting to sacrifice, bunted to Marshall, who fired to second for a forceout on Menke. Watson, moving to third, scored when Cedar Cedeno forced Doug Rader. Johnny Edwards then flied out.

Giants 2, Pirates 0 at Pittsburgh (day game):
Normally used as a reliever, Ron Bryant stepped into the injured Frank Reberger's place in the Giants' rotation and pitched a three-hitter to beat the Pirates, 2-0, for his first major league shutout. Dick Dietz singled and scored the first run on a triple by Ken Henderson in the fourth inning. Singles by Tito Fuentes and Willie McCovey and a double by Dietz added a tally in the fifth.

Cardinals 5, Phillies 0 at St. Louis (night game):
The Cardinals' Jerry battery of Reuss and McNertney combined to beat the Phillies, 5-0. Reuss pitched a six-hitter. McNertney, catching because Ted Simmons was away on military duty, smashed his first N. L. homer in the second inning, connecting with a man on base, and scored again after hitting a single in the fourth.
