Today's scores and summaries:

Red Sox 5, White Sox 4 at Boston (day game):
A walk to Carl Yastrzemski with the bases loaded in the eighth inning forced in the run that handed the Red Sox a 5-4 victory over the White Sox. Yastrzemski, who had hit a two-run homer earlier in the game, drew his pass from Don Eddy after Phil Gagliano walked and Luis Aparicio and Reggie Smith singled.

Orioles 7, Angels 1 at California (day game):
Jim Palmer not only pitched a six-hitter, but the Orioles' righthander drove in two runs with a single while defeating the Angels, 7-1. Palmer's hit with the bases loaded in the sixth inning kayoed Jim Maloney, who made his first A. L. start for the Angels.

Royals 6, Indians 4 at Kansas City (day game):
A six-run explosion in the first inning propelled the Royals to a 6-4 victory over the Indians. Ed Kirkpatrick hit a round-tripper with two men on base and Jerry May homered with one aboard for the Royals' big blows. John Lowenstein hit his first major league homer for the Indians in the seventh.

Twins 8, Yankees 0 at New York (day game):
Jim Kaat pitched a two-hitter and Tony Oliva batted in three runs with two homers and a single as the Twins defeated the Yankees, 8-0.

Tigers 10, A's 2 at Oakland (day game):
The Athletics' seven-game winning streak came to an end when they lost to the Tigers, 10-2. Mickey Lolich and Fred Scherman held the A's to three hits. Dick McAuliffe, Bill Freehan and Willie Horton homered for the Tigers. McAuliffe also had a double and drove in a total of five runs.

Senators 3, Brewers 2 at Washington (day game):
Batting for the first time this season, Don Wert singled in the 10th inning to pave the way for the run that gave the Senators a 3-2 victory over the Brewers. After his hit, Wert took third on a single by Frank Howard and scored the winning run when Tommy McCraw singled.

[DH] Padres 3, Braves 2 (day game) / Braves 4, Padres 3 at Atlanta (day game):
Unearned runs decided the split of a doubleheader with the Padres winning the first game, 3-2, and the Braves taking the second game, 4-3. In the opener, Cito Gaston reached second base on a wild throw by Marty Perez in the sixth inning and scored what proved to be the Padres' winning run on a single by Larry Stahl. Hank Aaron, favoring a sore knee, sat on the Braves' bench in the nightcap until the tenth inning when he came up as a pinch-hitter with the bases loaded and rifled a grounder off Enzo Hernandez' arm for an error as Orlando Cepeda scored the winning run. There were six homers in the twinbill, including the first of Ralph Garr's career with the Braves.

Cubs 9, Mets 3 at Chicago (day game):
Backed by the Cubs' best offensive effort so far this season, Fergie Jenkins survived a shaky second inning and defeated the Mets, 9-3. Jenkins also joined in the Cubs' 14-hit attack with a single and double, driving in three runs.

[DH] Dodgers 4, Reds 2 (day game) / Reds 2, Dodgers 0 at Cincinnati (day game):
Don Gullett pitched his first major league shutout and beat the Dodgers, 2-0, to give the Reds a split of a doubleheader. The Dodgers, who bunched four of their seven hits for all their runs in the fourth inning, won the opening game, 4-2, behind the five-hit hurling of Bill Singer. In the nightcap, Tommy Helms singled with the bases loaded in the second inning for the Reds' first run and Tony Perez added other tally with a homer in the sixth. The Reds ended a four-game losing streak while the Dodgers were stopped on their string of six victories.

Expos 2, Astros 1 at Houston (day game):
The Expos completed a sweep of the three-game series with the Astros by scoring two unearned runs in the third inning to gain a 2-1 victory behind the three-hit hurling of Bill Stoneman. Bobby Wine walked to open the third and when Jack Billingham threw wildly on a bunt by Stoneman, runners wound up at second and third. Wine scored on an infield out by Bob Bailey and Stoneman crossed the plate on a single by Ron Hunt.

Pirates 6, Giants 2 at Pittsburgh (day game):
Nelson Briles, making his first start for the Pirates, gained a 6-2 victory over the Giants with last-out help from Dave Giusti. The Pirates scored three of their runs off Juan Marichal in the third inning. Milt May beat out an infield hit with the bases loaded to plate one tally and Al Oliver doubled to drive in two more. Vic Davalillo batted in the Bucs' last three runs with a double in the sixth inning and a single in the eighth.

Cardinals 5, Phillies 4 at St. Louis (day game):
Joe Torre, who had been collared in four previous trips, came through with a bases-loaded single in the ninth inning, hitting safely in his 19th straight game, to climax a rally by the Cardinals in their 5-4 victory over the Phillies. The Cardinals, who were losing, 4-2, started the comeback with a run on a walk to Bob Burda and singles by Ted Sizemore and Joe Hague. Lou Brock forced Hague, Sizemore scoring. After Brock stole second, Matty Alou walked and Jim Beauchamp was safe on an error to fill the sacks for Torre's streak-extending safety.
