Today's scores and summaries:

Brewers 4, Red Sox 2 at Boston (night game):
The Red Sox were stopped on their five-game winning streak by the Brewers, who gained a 4-2 victory behind the six-hit pitching of Marty Pattin. Four extra-base hits -- a homer by Mike Hegan, triple by Dave May and doubles by Ellie Rodriguez and Tommy Harper -- were the chief ingredients in the Brewers' scoring.

Angels 2, Indians 1 at California (night game):
After being shut out for eight innings by Ray Lamb, the Angels rallied for two runs in the ninth and defeated the Indians, 2-1. Lamb, making his first major league start, was lifted when Alex Johnson singled with one away. Camilo Pascual relieved and was tagged for a double by Tony Conigliaro. Steve Mingori took over and walked Jim Fregosi intentionally. Chuck Machemehl stepped in as the Indians' fourth pitcher of the inning and was unable to stop the Angels, who got the tying run on a sacrifice fly by John Stephenson and the winning run on a single by Ken McMullen.

Royals 8, Tigers 1 at Kansas City (night game):
Bruce Dal Canton, who was obtained by the Royals from the Pirates in a winter deal, pitched a six-hitter and beat the Tigers, 8-1, for his first A. L. victory. The Royals held a slim 2-1 lead until the seventh inning when Amos Otis hit a homer to spark a four-run outburst that kayoed Dean Chance, who lost his third straight decision with the Tigers.

Yankees 6, White Sox 5 at New York (night game):
A single by Felipe Alou in the 12th inning for the Yankees' 16th hit of the game scored Roy White and beat the White Sox, 6-5. Thurman Munson drew a walk to lead off and was forced by White. Danny Cater singled White to third before Alou ended the three-hour, 22-minute contest.

Orioles 6, A's 2 at Oakland (night game):
Hitting safely in his 16th straight game, Davey Johnson batted in two runs with a single in the third inning and two more with a double in the eighth to lead the Orioles to a 6-2 victory over the Athletics. Dave McNally, who boosted his record to 4-0, gave up the A's runs in the fourth when Angel Mangual hit his first major league homer after a double by Tommy Davis.

Senators 2, Twins 0 at Washington (night game):
Denny McLain posted his second shutout of the season, pitching the Senators to a 2-0 victory over the Twins. A walk to Toby Harrah, sacrifice by McLain and single by Tim Cullen produced a run in the sixth inning and decided McLain's duel with Bert Blyleven. Bernie Allen plated an insurance run with a single in the seventh.

Giants 6, Braves 5 at Atlanta (night game):
Hank Aaron smashed the 600th homer of his major league career and his 542nd double, but Willie Mays stole the spotlight by driving in a run with a single in the 10th inning for his fourth hit of the game to send the Giants past the Braves, 6-5. Aaron whacked his homer off Gaylord Perry with a man on base in the third inning to become the third slugger to reach the 600 plateau in homers after Babe Ruth and Willie Mays. Ralph Garr, who had four hits for the Braves, tied the score at 5-5 with a run-scoring single in the seventh. Mays' winning hit in the 10th followed singles by Hal Lanier and Chris Speier.

Reds 6, Padres 1 at Cincinnati (night game):
With a helping hand from Clay Carroll, who pitched the last two innings, Gary Nolan gained his first victory of the season when the Reds defeated the Padres, 6-1. The Reds' runs included a theft of home by Johnny Bench in a double steal with Tommy Helms. The Padres' run came on Don Mason's second major league homer. Mason hit his first while with the Giants June 24, 1966, and that also came in a loss to the Reds.

Astros 1, Phillies 0 at Houston (night game):
A sacrifice fly by Doug Rader decided Larry Dierker's duel with Jim Bunning and gave the Astros a 1-0 victory over the Phillies. Denis Menke singled in the eighth, took second on a sacrifice by Norm Miller and then made a surprise steal of third to get into position to score on Rader's fly.

Dodgers 7, Pirates 5 at Pittsburgh (night game):
Willie Stargell set the major league record for most homers in April, hitting his 11th of the month, but the Pirates lost to the Dodgers, 7-5. The slugging star connected off Pete Mikkelsen in the ninth inning. Manny Mota accounted for the Dodgers' winning margin, driving in two runs with a double in the eighth.

Mets 2, Cardinals 1 at St. Louis (night game):
The clutch pitching of Danny Frisella, who put down a Cardinals' threat in the ninth inning, enabled the Mets to emerge with a 2-1 victory. Jerry Koosman was lifted after Joe Torre singled. When Jose Cardenal bunted, Donn Clendenon threw late to second and both runners were safe. Frisella struck out Bob Burda, but Leron Lee got a scratch infield hit to load the bases. With the game on the line, Frisella retired Ted Sizemore on a pop fly and struck out Joe Hague.
