Today's scores and summaries:
Red Sox 10, Brewers 3 at Boston (day game):
The Brewers executed the first triple play in the major leagues this season, but that was their only consolation in a 10-3 loss to the Red Sox. In the third inning, George Scott doubled and reached third when Don Pavletich was safe on an error. Billy Conigliaro then bounced to Rick Auerbach, who tossed to Ted Kubiak, forcing Pavletich. Kubiak's relay to Mike Hegan at first retired Conigliaro. Scott, making a belated dash for home, was nailed at the plate for the third out on Hegan's throw to Ellie Rodriguez.
Indians 3, Angels 2 at California (night game):
The Indians snapped their seven-game losing streak when pinch-hitter Gomer Hodge delivered a sacrifice fly in the ninth inning, scoring John Lowenstein, to beat the Angels, 3-2. Lowenstein walked and reached third on a single by Graig Nettles.
Tigers 2, Royals 1 at Kansas City (night game):
A walk to Bill Freehan, single by Ed Brinkman and sacrifice fly by Dick McAuliffe in the 10th inning brought the Tigers a 2-1 victory over the Royals. The run off Ted Abernathy was the first yielded by the veteran reliever in 12 innings of appearances this year.
A's 5, Orioles 4 at Oakland (night game):
Tommy Davis, who walked as a pinch-hitter in the seventh inning and then took over at first base for the Athletics, singled a run across the plate in the ninth to beat the Orioles, 5-4. Bert Campaneris singled, Joe Rudi sacrificed and Reggie Jackson drew an intentional pass before Davis delivered his winning hit.
Senators 4, Twins 3 at Washington (night game):
Two runs that scored on an infield hit capped a rally that lifted the Senators to a 4-3 victory over the Twins. With the Twins leading, 3-1, the Senators counted one run in the eighth inning on walks to Elliott Maddox and Joe Foy and a two-out single by Tommy McCraw. After Richie Scheinblum drew a pass to load the bases, Paul Casanova worked the count to 3-and-2 and then, with the runners going, hit a high chopper down the third base line. When Harmon Killebrew's throw to first was too late to catch Casanova, Foy scored easily from third and McCraw raced home from second with the deciding run.
Giants 5, Braves 3 at Atlanta (night game):
George Foster, rookie outfielder with the Giants, rapped four hits, including a homer, and drove in three runs to lead the way to a 5-3 victory over the Braves. Steve Stone, the Giants' rookie righthander, pitched the first six innings and was the winner with the help of veteran Don McMahon, who finished the game.
Cubs 3, Expos 2 at Chicago (day game):
After setting up a five-man infield, the Expos gambled on a slow roller by Ron Santo down the third base line in the ninth inning and lost to the Cubs, 3-2. Carl Morton retired 14 straight batters before geting into trouble in the ninth when Don Kessinger beat out an infield hit and Glenn Beckert singled. Morton, trying to pick Kessinger off second, threw wildly for the Expos' first error in seven games and both runners advanced. After an intentional pass to Billy Williams, manager Gene Mauch removed outfielder Jim Fairey and installed Ron Brand as an extra infielder on the left side of the diamond. Santo topped a pitch and the Expos let the ball roll, hoping it would go foul. Instead, it hit the third base bag for a hit as Kessinger scored.
Reds 6, Padres 5 at Cincinnati (night game):
The Padres misplayed a bunt in the ninth inning and, as a result, lost to the Reds, 6-5. Tommy Helms singled to open the frame and gave way on the paths to Frank Duffy. Woody Woodward bunted to Nate Colbert, who threw late to second. When Enzo Hernandez threw wildly returning the ball to first, the runners advanced an extra base. After Bill Plummer struck out, the Padres walked Pete Rose intentionally. Dave Concepcion forced Duffy at the plate, but Tony Perez singled to score Woodward with the Reds' winning run.
Astros 4, Phillies 3 at Houston (night game):
The use of Cesar Geronimo as a defensive replacement in the eighth inning produced unexpected dividends for the Astros when the outfielder tripled in the 10th to score Jim Wynn and beat the Phillies, 4-3. The Phillies tied the game in the ninth on doubles by Roger Freed and Ron Stone. Wynn walked before Geronimo hit his triple.
Pirates 7, Dodgers 5 at Pittsburgh (night game):
The Dodgers played percentages with the wrong batter and paid for their gamble when Willie Stargell smashed a tie with a two-run double to win the game for the Pirates, 7-5. Pinch-hitter Gene Clines walked in the seventh inning and reached second on a balk. The Dodgers then walked Roberto Clemente in order that southpaw Bob O'Brien might pitch to Stargell, who bats lefthanded. Stargell wrecked the move with his two-run double.
Mets 9, Cardinals 1 at St. Louis (night game):
Gary Gentry scattered seven hits and pitched the Mets to a 9-1 victory over the Cardinals. Ed Kranepool batted in three runs with two singles and a double. Leron Lee saved the Cards from being shut out by hitting a homer in the eighth inning.
