Today's scores and summaries:
Angels 8, Indians 4 at California (night game):
The no-hit relief work of Eddie Fisher over the last 4 1/3 innings checked the Indians and enabled the Angels to rack up an 8-4 victory. Fisher replaced Tom Murphy after Graig Nettles hit a two-run homer to cut the Angels' lead to 5-4. The Angels then pulled away with two runs on a double by Tony Gonzalez in the sixth and their final marker on a homer by Syd O'Brien in the seventh.
Orioles 3, A's 2 at Oakland (day game):
Homers accounted for all the runs in the game as the Orioles edged the Athletics, 3-2, in a duel between Jim Palmer and Rollie Fingers. Paul Blair was safe on an error in the first inning and Boog Powell followed with a homer for the Orioles' first two runs. A single by Sal Bando and boundary belt by Dave Duncan tied the score in the second. The deadlock persisted until the eighth when Don Buford hit for the circuit to provide the Orioles' winning run.
White Sox 5, Senators 4 at Washington (night game):
Three pinch-hitters, Walt Williams, Rich Morales and Rich McKinney, came through with singles as the White Sox scored four runs in the seventh inning to defeat the Senators, 5-4. Singles by Mike Andrews, Williams and Morales produced the first run. After a pass to Lee Maye and a forceout of Williams at the plate, McKinney drove in two runs with a single and Carlos May followed with a sacrifice fly to plate what proved to be the deciding tally.
Giants 5, Braves 2 at Atlanta (night game):
Ken Henderson, who had gone hitless in 11 straight trips against Braves' pitching, broke out of his slump with a single in the 13th inning to spark the Giants to a 5-2 victory. Chris Speier led off with a single and was automatically out when hit on the paths by the ball on a grounder stroked by Willie Mays, who received credit for a single. One out later, Dick Dietz walked. Henderson followed with his single to score Mays with the tie-breaking run. The Giants then iced their verdict with run-scoring singles by Tito Fuentes and Hal Lanier.
Expos 7, Cubs 6 at Chicago (day game):
The Expos, who were trailing, 6-1, after six innings, rallied to defeat the Cubs, 7-6, capping their comeback with three runs in the ninth. After narrowing the Cubs' lead with one run in the seventh and two in the eighth, the Expos began their ninth-inning rally with one-out singles by Ron Hunt and Rusty Staub. Bob Bailey forced Staub, Hunt scoring. Ron Swoboda tripled to tie the game and then scored the winning run on a single by John Bateman.
Reds 4, Padres 2 at Cincinnati (day game):
Wayne Simpson received credit for his first victory of the season when the Reds defeated the Padres, 4-2. Simpson, who was a 14-game winner last year before developing shoulder trouble, was lifted after walking the leadoff man in the seventh inning and Wayne Granger finished. Pete Rose, Ty Cline and Lee May rapped three hits apiece for the Reds.
Dodgers 2, Pirates 1 at Pittsburgh (night game):
A single by Duke Sims with the bases loaded in the ninth inning scored Manny Mota and brought the Dodgers a 2-1 victory over the Pirates. Mota started the stanza by beating out an infield hit and Wes Parker followed with a double. After an intentional pass to Willie Davis, Sims lined his single.
Mets 7, Cardinals 0 at St. Louis (day game):
With Nolan Ryan and Danny Frisella combining on a three-hitter, the Mets posted a 7-0 victory to complete a sweep of the four-game series with the Cardinals. The Mets broke the game apart with six runs in the seventh inning, three scoring on a homer by Donn Clendenon. Joe Torre was stopped on his 22-game batting streak.
