Today's scores and summaries:

Orioles 4, Angels 1 at Baltimore (night game):
Winning his fifth straight game, Jim Palmer pitched the Orioles to a 4-1 victory over the Angels. Jim Spencer homered for the Angels in the first inning, but the Orioles took command with three runs in the fourth on a single by Don Buford, doubles by Mark Belanger and Boog Powell and a single by Frank Robinson.

Red Sox 4, White Sox 3 at Chicago (night game):
The Red Sox rallied for two runs in the seventh inning and defeated the White Sox, 4-3. Rico Petrocelli singled, George Scott doubled and Billy Conigliaro singled for the tying run. Then, after an intentional pass to Mike Fiore, Phil Gagliano scratched a hit off the glove of Terry Forster to drive in the deciding marker.

Royals 2, Indians 0 at Cleveland (day game):
The Indians not only went down to a 2-0 defeat at the hands of the Royals, but also lost the services of Steve Hargan for an indefinite period when the pitcher suffered a hairline fracture of his right ankle in a fall while covering first base in the fifth inning. Lou Piniella, Royals' outfielder, also was hurt in the previous frame, suffering a fracture of the knuckle on his right thumb when hit by a pitched ball. Bruce Dal Canton posted the shutout with last-out help from Ted Abernathy, who retired Ted Ford on a fly with two men on base.

Tigers 6, A's 5 at Detroit (night game):
An error by Reggie Jackson in the ninth inning enabled the Tigers to defeat the Athletics, 6-5. With two out, Al Kaline drew a pass from Jim Roland. Jim Northrup then singled to right and when Jackson let the ball get away, Kaline scored from first base.

Brewers 2, Senators 0 at Milwaukee (night game):
Two "firsts" marked the Brewers' 2-0 victory over the Senators. Johnny Briggs, coming up after a pass to Tommy Harper in the opening frame, hit his first A. L. homer to account for the Brewers' runs. Bill Parsons took it from there and pitched his first major league shutout, allowing only three hits.

Twins 6, Yankees 5 at Minnesota (night game):
After a two-out homer by Rod Carew tied the score in the ninth inning, another two-out homer by Jim Holt in the 10th gave the Twins a 6-5 victory over the Yankees. The homers were the first of the year for Carew and Holt. Both came off Lindy McDaniel.

Dodgers 2, Reds 0 at Los Angeles (night game):
A. L. castoff Al Downing continued his brilliant pitching for the Dodgers with his first N. L. shutout, beating the Reds, 2-0. A walk to Steve Garvey, single by Bill Buckner, sacrifice by Downing and infield hit by Maury Wills produced the Dodgers' first run in the second inning. Wes Parker homered in the eighth.

Mets 2, Cubs 1 at New York (night game):
A single by Bud Harrelson in the seventh inning drove in the tie-breaking run to give the Mets a 2-1 victory over the Cubs. Bob Aspromonte hit his first homer in a Mets' uniform in the second inning and the Cubs picked up their run on doubles by Ron Santo and Johnny Callison in the fifth. Jerry Grote singled for the Mets in the seventh and stopped at second on a single by Don Hahn. Al Weis forced Hahn, but Harrelson came through with a clutch single.

Cardinals 7, Phillies 3 at Philadelphia (night game):
Jose Cardenal, who had slumped to an average of .181, broke out with a double and homer, driving in three runs, to lead the Cardinals to a 7-3 victory over the Phillies. Joe Torre batted in two runs.

Padres 3, Braves 2 at San Diego (night game):
The Padres snapped their seven-game losing streak when Cito Gaston smashed two homers and Nate Colbert hit one to beat the Braves, 3-2. Gaston connected for the first time in the first inning. After a circuit clout by Mike Lum helped the Braves go ahead, Gaston and Colbert homered off Pat Jarvis on successive pitches in the eighth inning.

Pirates 10, Giants 2 at San Francisco (night game):
The Pirates broke a tight game apart with a seven-run explosion in the eighth inning and defeated the Giants, 10-2. Willie Stargell capped the outburst by hitting a homer with two men on base.
