Today's scores and summaries:

Yankees 4, White Sox 3 at Chicago (night game):
Although outhitting the Yankees, 12-8, the White Sox went down to a 4-3 defeat. The Yankees knocked out Tommy John in the first inning, scoring three runs, and added the deciding tally off Terry Forster in the sixth on a double by Felipe Alou and triple by Thurman Munson. Pinch-doubles by Mike Andrews, Ed Stroud and Lee Maye figured in the White Sox scoring.

Angels 4, Indians 2 at Cleveland (night game):
One shortstop homered in the fifth inning and another hit for the circuit with a man on base in the 11th to give the Angels a 4-2 victory over the Indians. Jim Fregosi, who homered in the fifth, became ill and left the game in favor of Syd O'Brien. After the Indians rallied to tie the score at 2-2, Roger Repoz walked in the 11th and was forced by Ken McMullen before O'Brien smashed the deciding blow off Chuck Machemehl. Sam McDowell, who started for the Indians, struck out five and went over the 2,000 total for his major league career.

Tigers 3, Royals 1 at Detroit (night game):
A bunt that turned into a "home run" on a wild throw in the seventh inning helped the Tigers defeat the Royals, 3-1. After the Royals scored their run in the top half of the seventh, Ed Brinkman doubled for the Tigers. Mickey Lolich then bunted to Mike Hedlund, who threw wildly to third base. Brinkman scored easily and when Carl Taylor overran the ball in left field, Lolich also chugged around the bases. Dick McAuliffe came to the plate next and settled any doubts by smashing a homer off the rattled Hedlund.

Red Sox 5, Brewers 4 at Milwaukee (night game):
Billy Conigliaro hit a three-run homer in the first inning and then doubled and scored the winning run in the eighth as the Red Sox defeated the Brewers, 5-4. After Conigliaro's clout, the Brewers went ahead, 4-3, but the Red Sox tied the count in the seventh on a single by Doug Griffin and double by Joe Lahoud. Following his double in the eighth, Conigliaro advanced to third on a grounder and crossed the plate on a sacrifice fly by Duane Josephson.

Senators 6, Twins 5 at Minnesota (night game):
An error by Tony Oliva, who dropped a short fly in right field with two out, allowed the Senators to score the last run in their ninth-inning rally to defeat the Twins, 6-5. Bert Blyleven, pitching for the Twins with a 5-2 lead, retired the first two batters in the ninth, but then was kayoed when Tommy McCraw tripled, Bernie Allen singled and Paul Casanova homered to tie the score. Toby Harrah singled to greet Ray Corbin, moved to second on a wild pitch and scored when Oliva muffed a fly by Dick Billings.

Pirates 3, Dodgers 2 at Los Angeles (night game):
Willie Stargell hit his 13th homer of the season in the sixth inning to provide what proved to be the Pirates' deciding run in a 3-2 victory over the Dodgers.

Expos 3, Cubs 1 at Montreal (night game):
Led by Ron Fairly, who drove in two runs with a homer and single, the Expos defeated the Cubs, 3-1. After Fairly's homer in the seventh tied the score at 1-1, a double by Ron Swoboda, sacrifice by John Bateman and single by Coco Laboy added the go-ahead tally. Fairly's single produced an insurance run in the eighth after a single by Boots Day and pass to Ron Hunt.

Mets 3, Cardinals 1 at New York (night game):
The second duel of the season between Tom Seaver and Bob Gibson ended again in favor of the Mets' ace, who defeated the Cardinals, 3-1. The Cards counted their run in the first inning on a single by Lou Brock, a stolen base, infield hit by Ted Simmons and sacrifice fly by Joe Torre. The Mets pulled even in the seventh on a triple by Bud Harrelson and wild pitch by Gibson. Ed Kranepool doubled in the eighth and scored the tie-breaking run on another two-bagger by Jerry Grote, who also crossed the plate when Ted Sizemore missed connections with a grounder by Seaver. In their previous meeting this season, Seaver beat Gibson, 12-2, in St. Louis April 26.

Astros 8, Phillies 1 at Philadelphia (night game):
Joe Morgan collected four hits, stole two bases, scored three runs and drove in two to lead the Astros to an 8-1 victory over the Phillies. Don Wilson, who pitched for the Astros, had the distinction of batting in two runs with a bunt double in the second inning when the ball rolled through the Phillies' infield past shortstop Larry Bowa who was breaking to cover third base.

Giants 4, Braves 3 at San Francisco (night game):
Willie Mays, playing his first game since the previous day's celebration of his 40th birthday, drove in a run with a single in the 10th inning to give the Giants a 4-3 victory over the Braves. Earl Williams homered for the Braves in the ninth to send the game into overtime. Bobby Bonds doubled in the Giants' 10th, went to third on a bunt by Chris Speier and scored on Mays' single.
