[DH] A's 6, Orioles 2 (day game) / A's 2, Orioles 1 at Baltimore (day game):
With Catfish Hunter and Vida Blue pitching four-hitters, the Athletics defeated the Orioles in a doubleheader, 6-2 and 2-1. The A's won the first game with four runs in the sixth inning, helped by Mike Cuellar's wildness. Cuellar walked three and gave up a run-scoring single by Hunter before being removed. Another run was forced in on pass issued by Jim Hardin. Tom Dukes then took over and two more counted on a sacrifice fly by Reggie Jackson and an error. Blue turned in his eighth consecutive complete-game victory in a duel with Jim Palmer. The A's scored their runs in the seventh after Joe Rudi singled and took third on a single by Jackson. Palmer uncorked a wild pitch, Rudi scoring, and when EAndy tchebarren made a wild throw to the plate, Mark Belanger and Brooks Robinson collided going after the loose ball and Jackson raced home with the A's deciding run.

Yankees 6, White Sox 1 at Chicago (day game):
Mike Kekich and Jack Aker combined on a six-hitter in pitching the Yankees to a 6-1 victory over the White Sox, who suffered their fifth straight defeat. Aker replaced Kekich with the bases loaded and two out in the sixth inning and retired Bill Melton to end the threat. Melton saved the White Sox from being shutout with a run-scoring double in the ninth.

Indians 4, Angels 1 at Cleveland (day game):
The Indians snapped a four-game losing streak by defeating the Angels, 4-1, for only their fourth victory in the last 18 games and sixth in the last 24. Alan Foster hurled the route for the Indians, yielding seven hits, and Ted Uhlaender batted in two runs with a single and double.

Royals 6, Tigers 2 at Detroit (day game):
Gail Hopkins, who appeared in the starting lineup for only the second time this season, tripled with the bases loaded in the first inning and added a homer in the seventh to lead the Royals to a 6-2 victory over the Tigers. The first baseman had been at bat only 10 times previously this year and had just one hit.

Brewers 6, Red Sox 1 at Milwaukee (day game):
Staked to a six-run lead in the first inning, Bill Parsons pitched the Brewers to a 6-1 victory over the Red Sox, whose six-game winning streak ended. Ron Theobald, batting twice during the inning, singled on both trips. Danny Walton and Andy Kosco each drove in two runs.

Twins 6, Senators 5 at Minnesota (day game):
George Mitterwald singled with the bases loaded and two out in the 10th inning, scoring Jim Holt, to give the Twins a 6-5 victory over the Senators. Holt, who had two triples in the game, singled in the 10th. Another single by Brant Alyea and walk to Rich Reese filled the sacks before Mitterwald's single beat Denny McLain.

Pirates 11, Dodgers 5 at Los Angeles (day game):
A bases-loaded double by Charlie Sands in the rookie catcher's first time at bat this season was the Pirates' big blow in an eight-run rally in the eighth that beat the Dodgers, 11-5. The Pirates' hits in the outburst included two doubles by Gene Clines.

Expos 7, Cubs 3 at Montreal (day game):
Mack Jones, in the Expos' starting lineup for the first time since April 11, drove in five runs with his first two homers of the season to slug the Cubs, 7-3. After Jones connected with a man on base in the fourth inning, Bob Bailey also hit his first homer of the season. Jones' second drive came with two aboard in the fifth.

Mets 9, Cardinals 5 at New York (day game):
Led by Tim Foli, who drove in four runs with a triple and double his first two times at bat, the Mets built a nine-run lead and defeated the Cardinals, 9-5. Foli tripled to produce one of the Mets' two runs in the first inning and doubled with the bases loaded in the second.

Phillies 2, Astros 1 at Philadelphia (day game):
A pair of run-scoring hits by Tim McCarver enabled the Phillies to defeat the Astros, 2-1. Doubles by Ron Stone and McCarver accounted for the first run in the second inning. After the Astros tied the score, Willie Montanez doubled in the ninth and moved to third on a wild pitch. Following a pass to Stone, McCarver singled to drive in the winning run.

Padres 7, Reds 2 at San Diego (day game):
The Padres exploded for six runs in the first inning, including a bases-loaded triple by Ed Spiezio, and defeated the Reds, 7-2, behind the pitching of Clay Kirby, who struck out 12 to equal the San Diego club record. Dave Campbell homered to ignite the Padres' outburst. After three walks, Spiezio hit his triple. Bob Barton capped the inning with a homer. Campbell connected for the circuit again in the seventh.

[DH] Giants 5, Braves 2 (day game) / Braves 6, Giants 5 at San Francisco (day game):
Five players each drove in a run for the Giants to account for a 5-2 victory in the opener of a doubleheader, but the Braves came back to win the nightcap in 10 innings, 6-5. The Giants' hits in the lidlifter included a homer by Willie Mays. In the second game, Willie McCovey hit a three-run homer and Russ Gibson rapped a two-run triple to produce the Giants' runs. Orlando Cepeda smashed a grand-slam homer for the Braves in the third inning and tied the score at 5-5 with a solo swat in the sixth. Ralph Garr singled in the 10th for his fourth hit of the game. After an infield hit by Felix Millan, Cepeda flied out, but Earl Williams singled to drive in the winning run.
