A double by Amos Otis and single by Gail Hopkins each accounted for two runs in the seventh inning as the Royals came from behind to defeat the Athletics. 5-4. Darold Knowles was tagged with his first loss since coming to the A's from the Senators.

White Sox 8, Twins 2 at Minnesota (day game):
Homers by Ed Herrmann, Rick Reichardt and Bill Melton helped power the White Sox to an 8-2 victory over the Twins. Melton connected with two men on base in the seventh inning when the White Sox iced their decision with a five-run outburst.

Indians 4, Yankees 2 at New York (day game):
An error by Stan Bahnsen that resulted in three unearned runs in the sixth inning enabled the Indians to defeat the Yankees, 4-2. Vada Pinson was on third and Ray Fosse on first with two out when Bahnsen muffed roller by Ken Harrelson, allowing Pinson to score the tying run. Eddie Leon then doubled to drive in two runs and provide the Indians' winning margin.

Senators 4, Tigers 3 at Washington (night game):
Capping a comeback by the Senators, who were held hitless for the first seven innings, Don Mincher smashed a pinch-homer in the 15th to beat the Tigers, 4-3. Paul Casanova singled in the eighth for the Nats' first hit off Mickey Lolich. After another single by Del Unser, two walks forced in Casanova. Then in the ninth, Dick Billings singled and Casanova homered to tie the score. Lolich left the mound after working 13 innings and Tom Timmerman was the loser in relief on Mincher's homer.

Braves 6, Phillies 2 at Atlanta (night game):
Clete Boyer homered with two men on base in the third inning when the Braves scored four runs to defeat the Phillies, 6-2. Felix Millan led off the frame with a single and scored on a safe bunt by Ralph Garr and a wild throw on the play by Denny Doyle. The Phillies then walked Cepeda intentionally and the move backfired when Boyer belted his homer.

Cubs 6, Padres 4 at Chicago (day game):
Winning his own game, Fergie Jenkins smashed a two-run homer in the fourth inning to provide the Cubs with a 6-4 victory over the Padres. Billy Williams hit the 300th homer of his career with the Cubs in the first. Jenkins' drive broke a 3-3 tie and the Cubs added another run on a double by Randy Hundley in the sixth.

Reds 6, Expos 1 at Cincinnati (night game):
With two out in the sixth inning, the Reds erupted for four runs, breaking a 1-1 tie, and defeated the Expos, 6-1. Buddy Bradford walked and counted the go-ahead tally on a double by Johnny Bench. Tony Perez singled, scoring Bench, and Lee May then smashed a two-run homer to cap the outburst.

Cardinals 6, Astros 5 at Houston (night game):
After failing to hold a 4-0 lead, the Cardinals came back to beat the Astros, 6-5, when Bob Burda knocked in two runs with a pinch-single in the sixth inning. Jim Beauchamp was safe on an error and Julian Javier doubled before Burda delivered his hit as a sub swinger for Steve Carlton.

Mets 9, Pirates 5 at Pittsburgh (night game):
Bud Harrelson rapped four straight singles, driving in three runs, and Dave Marshall and Cleon Jones smashed successive homers as the Mets defeated the Pirates, 9-5. Harrelson singled in the fourth before Marshall and Jones connected off Steve Blass to put the Mets ahead, 3-2. Gary Gentry, who started for the Mets, was ejected from the game in an argument with umpire Shag Crawford over a bunt attempt in the fifth. Tim Foli was on base with a double. Tom Seaver sacrificed, batting for Gentry, and was safe on a fielder's choice. Tommie Agee and Harrelson each singled a run home and Jones drove in another tally with a double. Harrelson added his two other RBIs with a single in the seventh.

Giants 1, Dodgers 0 at San Francisco (day game):
Bill Singer yielded only two hits, but was a hard-luck loser when Willie Mays doubled in the seventh inning and scored on a single by Dick Dietz to give the Giants a 1-0 victory over the Dodgers. Juan Marichal pitched a six-hitter for the shutout.
