Today's scores and summaries:

Brewers 6, Angels 2 at California (day game):
The Brewers matched their season high of 12 hits and defeated the Angels, 6-2. Tommy Harper, who went into the game batting .162, collected two singles, a double and triple. Ellie Rodriguez broke a 2-2 tie with a two-run homer in the fifth inning. Ted Kubiak ended his 0-for-32 slump with a homer in the seventh.

[DH] A's 4, Royals 2 (day game) / Royals 10, A's 4 at Kansas City (day game):
The Royals lost the first game of a doubleheader, 4-2, because of a botched-up double play, but came slugging back to defeat the Athletics in the second game, 10-4. In the seventh inning of the opener, with the score tied, 2-2, the A's had Dick Green on first base when Chuck Dobson grounded to Paul Schaal, who attempted to start a double play. However, Freddie Patek missed tagging second base and his throw to Gail Hopkins at first was wide, both runners being safe. Bert Campaneris and Reggie Jackson followed with run-scoring singles. In the nightcap, Schaal hit a two-run homer, but the Royals trailed until exploding for four runs in the seventh and four more in the eighth.

Twins 6, White Sox 2 at Minnesota (day game):
Pete Hamm, recalled from Portland (Pacific Coast), gained his first major league victory with the relief help of Ray Corbin when the Twins defeated the White Sox, 6-2. The Twins erased a 2-0 deficit with three runs in the sixth inning on doubles by George Mitterwald and Charlie Manuel, an error on a bunt by Cesar Tovar, single by Rich Reese and balk by Vicente Romo, who caught his spikes on the pitching rubber and fell off the mound.

Tigers 5, Senators 4 at Washington (day game):
Two homers by Mickey Stanley and one by Norm Cash helped the Tigers defeat the Senators, 5-4. Stanley's second smash of the game broke a 4-4 tie in the eighth inning. Joe Coleman was the winner in his first appearance against his former Washington teammates.

Phillies 4, Braves 3 at Atlanta (day game):
Led by Willie Montanez, the Phillies defeated the Braves, 4-3, to snap their five-game losing streak. Montanez homered in the fourth inning, connected for the circuit again with a man on base in the seventh and then doubled and scored what proved to be the winning run on a single by Don Money in the ninth.

[DH] Cubs 9, Padres 8 (day game) / Cubs 6, Padres 4 at Chicago (day game):
After wiping out a 7-1 deficit, the Cubs came from behind again with a two-run homer by Jim Hickman in the 10th inning to beat the Padres, 9-8, in the first game of a scheduled doubleheader. The second game was stopped by darkness after six innings, with the Cubs leading, 6-3, and was completed August 4 on the Padres' next visit to Chicago.

Expos 9, Reds 3 at Cincinnati (day game):
The Expos spoiled the major league debut of Ross Grimsley, knocking out the lefthander in the second inning en route to a 9-3 victory over the Reds. Grimsley, recalled from Indianapolis (American Association), yielded five hits and four runs. The Reds used four other pitchers, winding up with Wayne Granger, who was tagged for a three-run homer by John Bateman in the eighth.

Astros 12, Cardinals 4 at Houston (day game):
Starting with a grand-slam homer by Doug Rader in the first inning, the Astros trounced the Cardinals, 12-4. Rader also drove in two runs with a double in the third to tie the Houston club record of six RBIs in a game. Oddly, the Astros built up their big margin of victory although getting only one more hit than the Cardinals, 17-16.

Pirates 4, Mets 2 at Pittsburgh (day game):
Although yielding only three hits in seven innings, Nolan Ryan was charged with the defeat when the Pirates beat the Mets, 4-2. Ryan was losing, 2-0, when lifted for a pinch-hitter. The Pirates then scored what proved to be their winning runs off Tug McGraw in the eighth on singles by Richie Hebner and Al Oliver, a double by Bob Robertson and a wild pitch.

Dodgers 9, Giants 6 at San Francisco (day game):
The Dodgers rallied for three runs in the eighth inning and added three more in the ninth to defeat the Giants, 9-6. Bobby Bonds homered with two men on base in the sixth to send the Giants out in front, 5-3, but Dick Allen walked in the Dodgers' eighth and Wes Parker homered to tie the score. After a single by Tom Haller and pass to Jim Lefebvre, an error by Chris Speier on an attempted double play allowed Haller to score. In the ninth, the Dodgers loaded the bases on a double by Willie Davis and two walks, paving the way for runs on a single by Haller, pass to Manny Mota and single by Maury Wills.
