Today's scores and summaries:
Red Sox 3, Tigers 2 at Boston (night game):
George Scott drove in two runs with a double in the fifth inning to bring the Red Sox a 3-2 victory over the Tigers. After the Red Sox counted once in the first, the Tigers took the lead with a single by Dick McAuliffe and homer by Willie Horton in the fourth. However, in the fifth, Luis Aparicio singled, Reggie Smith walked and Scott sent them home with his two-bagger.
Twins 3, Angels 2 at California (night game):
A three-run homer by George Mitterwald and tremendous relief pitching by Tom Hall enabled the Twins to edge the Angels, 3-2. Hall replaced Bert Blyleven with two men on base and none out in the ninth inning and struck out three straight pinch-hitters -- Billy Cowan, Ken Berry and Jim Fregosi.
Yankees 6, Orioles 3 at New York (night game):
Roy White hit a two-run homer and Gene Michael batted in two runs with a pair of singles to lead the Yankees to a 6-3 victory over the Orioles. White whacked his homer in the first inning. Jerry Kenney counted on Michael's hits in the second and fourth after stealing second base on both occasions.
Indians 6, Senators 3 at Washington (night game):
Homers by John Lowenstein and Ken Harrelson, before Lowenstein was hurt in a collision, helped the Indians defeat the Senators, 6-3. Lowenstein led off the third inning with his round-tripper and, after a walk to Graig Nettles, Harrelson also hit for the circuit. In fourth, Lowenstein, Vada Pinson and Jack Heidemann slammed together chasing a pop fly by Tommy McCraw into shallow left field. As the three Indians lay stunned, McCraw circled the bases for an inside-the-park homer.
Braves 4, Mets 3 at Atlanta (night game):
Ralph Garr hit two consecutive homers, one to tie the score in the 10th inning and the other to give the Braves a 4-3 victory over the Mets in the 12th. All runs in the game counted on round-trippers. Donn Clendenon connected with a man on base for the Mets in the first, but Clete Boyer homered for the Braves in the second and Orlando Cepeda knotted the count with a circuit clout in the ninth. Clendenon homered again for the Mets in the 10th, but Garr tagged Tom Seaver for the tying blow and then delivered his winning smash off Ron Taylor in the 12th.
Phillies 3, Reds 2 at Cincinnati (night game):
Jim Bunning drove in two runs with a sacrifice fly and homer to help end his personal six-game losing streak as the Phillies defeated the Reds, 3-2. The Reds got their runs on round-trippers by Johnny Bench and Pete Rose. Bench's blow was the 100th of his major league career. With the score tied, 2-2, Mike Ryan homered for the Phillies' winning run in the eighth.
Astros 2, Padres 0 at Houston (night game):
Don Wilson yielded only four hits, did not issue a pass and pitched the Astros to a 2-0 victory over the Padres. Singles by Doug Rader and Jack Hiatt, around an error, produced an unearned run in the second inning and pinned the defeat on Dave Roberts. The other run tallied off Al Severinsen in the eighth on a single by Joe Morgan, a groundout, a wild pitch and infield hit by Jim Wynn.
Pirates 6, Expos 5 at Pittsburgh (night game):
Roberto Clemente, who homered in the eighth inning, came to bat again with two men on base and two out in the ninth and tripled to climax the Pirates' rallies in a 6-5 victory over the Expos. Bob Bailey drove in four runs with a homer and single to pace the Expos to a 5-0 lead before the Pirates counted twice in the third. Clemente and Bob Robertson homered in the eighth to pull the Pirates within one run. Then in the ninth Gene Alley and Dave Cash were on base with singles when Clemente crashed his triple off the center field wall.
