Today's scores and summaries:

Red Sox 5, Tigers 3 at Boston (night game):
Jim Lonborg, recalled from Louisville (American Association), pitched three hitless innings in relief and received credit for the victory when the Red Sox defeated the Tigers, 5-3. The Red Sox were losing, 3-2, when Lonborg took over, but Rico Petrocelli promptly swung the tables by hitting a homer after a single by Reggie Smith and double by Carl Yastrzemski in the seventh inning.

Angels 3, Twins 1 at California (night game):
Aided by five double plays, Tom Murphy pitched the Angels to a 3-1 victory over the Twins. Tony Conigliaro homered for the Angels, whose other runs involved doubles by Alex Johnson and Ken Berry. The Twins' tally was unearned.

Orioles 6, Yankees 2 at New York (night game):
Paul Blair homered on the first pitch of the game and Brooks Robinson hit for the circuit with a man on base in the fourth inning to pace the Orioles to a 6-2 victory over the Yankees.

A's 5, Brewers 2 at Oakland (night game):
The Athletics smashed three homers in support of Catfish Hunter, who beat the Brewers, 5-2, for his seventh straight victory. Bert Campaneris doubled, stole third and continued home on a throwing error by Ellie Rodriguez in the first inning. Homers by Rick Monday, Joe Rudi and Sal Bando accounted for the A's subsequent runs, Rudi's blow coming with a man on base.

Indians 7, Senators 3 at Washington (night game):
Despite a wildman performance by Sam McDowell, who walked 10 batters in the first six innings, the Indians were able to defeat the Senators, 7-3. McDowell did not yield a hit until Joe Foy singled to open the seventh. Vince Colbert then relieved and pitched the rest of the way. The Indians' attack included a three-run homer by Eddie Leon and double by Roy Foster, who accounted for two RBIs.

Braves 8, Mets 6 at Atlanta (night game):
Although each club hit three homers, the Braves' blows were more productive, accounting for six runs, and resulted in an 8-6 victory over the Mets. Hank Aaron homered with a man on base in the first inning. Ralph Garr led off the third with a solo swat and, after Aaron singled and Orlando Cepeda walked, Clete Boyer also hit for the circuit. The Braves added what proved to be their winning margin in the sixth when Marty Perez tripled one run home and scored himself on a sacrifice fly by Mike Lum. The Mets had two homers by Bob Aspromonte and one by Tommie Agee, but all came with the bases empty.

Giants 7, Cubs 3 at Chicago (day game):
A five-run explosion in the sixth inning propelled the Giants to a 7-3 victory over the Cubs, who were stopped on their six-game winning streak. The Giants loaded the bases on singles by Tito Fuentes, Al Gallagher and Ron Bryant to start their outburst and scored on a sacrifice fly by Bobby Bonds, single by Hal Lanier, bases-loaded walk to Willie McCovey and single by Ken Henderson.

Reds 4, Phillies 3 at Cincinnati (night game):
Pete Rose and Lee May homered in the first two innings and May also drove in two runs with a single in the fifth to enable the Reds to defeat the Phillies, 4-3. May's decisive hit, breaking a 2-2 tie, followed a single by Johnny Bench and double by Tony Perez.

Astros 3, Padres 2 at Houston (night game):
After collecting only one hit in the first seven innings, the Astros rallied to defeat the Padres, 3-2. The Astros caught up with Steve Arlin in the eighth and scored two runs on a double by Denis Menke, infield hit by Jesus Alou, double by Rich Chiles and infield out by Roger Metzger. Bob Miller was the Padres' loser in relief in the ninth on a single by Cesar Cedeno, a wild pitch, pass to Jim Wynn and single by Menke.

Pirates 3, Expos 2 at Pittsburgh (night game):
For the second night in succession, Mike Marshall failed in relief in the ninth inning and was the loser when the Pirates edged the Expos, 3-2. Marshall walked Gene Alley with one away and, after Bill Mazeroski grounded out, advancing the runner, Dave Cash lined a game-winning single. In the previous night's game, Roberto Clemente hit a two-run triple in the ninth to beat Marshall, 6-5.

Cardinals 6, Dodgers 5 at St. Louis (night game):
A single by Jose Cardenal with the bases loaded in the ninth inning scored Lou Brock and gave the Cardinals a 6-5 victory over the Dodgers. Brock led off with a double and Matty Alou was passed intentionally. After a sacrifice by Ted Simmons, Joe Torre also was handed a free ticket to fill the sacks for Cardenal.
