Today's scores and summaries:
Red Sox 7, Yankees 2 at Boston (night game):
Sonny Siebert gained his seventh straight victory when the Red Sox broke away with five runs in the seventh and eighth innings to defeat the Yankees, 7-2. Siebert singled in the seventh and Reggie Smith homered to break a 2-2 tie. The Red Sox clinched the decision with three runs in the eighth, one on a homer by Billy Conigliaro and two on a double by Luis Aparicio.
Twins 12, Angels 6 at California (night game):
A two-run homer by Tony Oliva in the third inning and two-run double by Harmon Killebrew in the fifth helped the Twins overcome an early deficit en route to a 12-6 victory over the Angels. The Twins were losing, 5-2, before Oliva hit his homer. The Angels picked up a run in their half for a 6-4 lead, but Killebrew's double with the bases loaded tied the score and the Twins then went ahead to stay when another run counted on a walk that filled the sacks again, and a forceout by Leo Cardenas.
Tigers 12, Indians 1 at Cleveland (night game):
Al Kaline and Dalton Jones entered the homer ranks for the first time this season to mark the Tigers' attack in a 12-1 trouncing of the Indians. Jones hit for the circuit in the second inning. Kaline, after connecting in the third, smashed another homer in the fifth. Dick McAuliffe also had a round-tripper for the Tigers, plus a double, and batted in four runs.
Royals 2, White Sox 0 at Kansas City (night game):
One pitch by Ted Abernathy, who replaced Mike Hedlund with two men on base and two out in the ninth inning, saved the Royals' 2-0 victory over the White Sox. On Abernathy's only delivery, Walt Williams lined softly to second baseman Cookie Rojas. The Royals scored their runs on a walk to Ed Kirkpatrick and triple by Paul Schaal in the sixth and on a homer by Amos Otis in the seventh.
A's 3, Brewers 0 at Oakland (night game):
Undefeated since opening day, Vida Blue racked up his ninth straight victory for the Athletics and posted his fifth shutout of the season with a three-hitter to beat the Brewers, 3-0. Rick Monday gave the southpaw the only run he needed with a homer in the sixth inning. Reggie Jackson provided more elbow room with another homer after a single by Joe Rudi in the seventh.
Orioles 4, Senators 1 at Washington (night game):
First-inning jitters wrecked the major league debut of Mike Thompson, who allowed only one hit in seven innings of pitching, but was a loser when the Orioles defeated the Senators, 4-1. The rookie righthander from Denver (American Association) walked the first three batters and then uncorked a wild pitch to allow one run to score. Another followed when catcher Paul Casanova threw wildly on a double steal by Frank Robinson and Paul Blair. The Orioles iced their victory with the final two runs off reliever Horacio Pina in the ninth.
Braves 10, Expos 4 at Atlanta (night game):
Continuing his slugging outburst, Clete Boyer belted two homers, giving him five in last the five games, to lead the Braves to a 10-4 victory over the Expos. Mike Lum also hit two homers. After Boyer connected with a man on base in the third inning, Boyer and Lum homered in succession in the sixth. Lum added his other blow with a man on base in the eighth.
Cubs 9, Giants 5 at Chicago (day game):
Billy Williams drove in six runs with two homers and a triple to power the Cubs to a 9-5 victory over the Giants. Williams homered with two men on base in the first inning, added a solo swat in the third and tripled for two more runs in the sixth. J.C. Martin also homered for the Cubs, connecting with a mate aboard in the second. As a result of the slugging support, Fergie Jenkins racked up his seventh consecutive victory even though the Giants had homers by Hal Lanier, Bobby Bonds and Dick Dietz.
Pirates 6, Reds 1 at Cincinnati (night game):
Led by Roberto Clemente, who rapped four hits including a triple and inside-the-park homer, the Pirates defeated the Reds, 6-1, and moved into first place in the East division ahead of the Mets. Clemente got his homer in the third inning on a drive that struck high on the wall in center field and bounced past center fielder Buddy Bradford.
Padres 2, Astros 1 at Houston (night game):
A double by Nate Colbert in the 10th inning and two-out single by Ollie Brown on a one-hop smash off Denis Menke's glove gave the Padres a 2-1 victory over the Astros.
Phillies 4, Mets 1 at Philadelphia (night game):
Terry Harmon drove in three runs with a double after the Phillies loaded the bases with the aid of two bunts in the seventh inning to defeat the Mets, 4-1. Deron Johnson singled to open the stanza and when Bob Aspromonte threw wildly to second on a bunt by Joe Lis, both runners were safe. Roger Freed then bunted safely between Jerry Koosman and Donn Clendenon to fill the sacks.
Dodgers 6, Cardinals 5 at St. Louis (night game):
Although the Cardinals jumped off to a 5-2 lead, Bob Gibson was unable to maintain his advantage and lost to the Dodgers, 6-5. The Dodgers tied the score with the aid of two unearned runs and then beat Gibson in the eighth inning when Duke Sims doubled and Bobby Valentine singled to drive in pinch-runner Von Joshua.
