Today's scores and summaries:

Red Sox 5, Yankees 2 at Boston (night game):
Two-run homers by Rico Petrocelli and George Scott carried the Red Sox to a 5-2 victory over the Yankees. The Red Sox scored in the first inning on a walk to Reggie Smith and double by Carl Yastrzemski before Petrocelli socked his homer. Scott's smash followed a single by Yastrzemski in the eighth.

Angels 1, Twins 0 at California (night game):
John Stephenson, hitting safely in his 12th straight game, singled a run home in the eighth inning to enable the Angels to defeat the Twins, 1-0. Sandy Alomar led off the frame with a single and, after a sacrifice, Tony Conigliaro walked before Stephenson singled off Ray Corbin to give the victory to Clyde Wright.

Tigers 5, Indians 3 at Cleveland (night game):
Ending a string of eight hitless appearances, Willie Horton smashed a homer after a walk to Jim Northrup in the 11th inning to give the Tigers a 5-3 victory over the Indians.

A's 7, Brewers 3 at Oakland (night game):
Sal Bando collected four of the Athletics' 13 hits and Dave Duncan and Mike Epstein belted homers to lead the attack in a 7-3 victory over the Brewers. Chuck Dobson, who was on the A's disabled list until May 2, won his third straight game with the help of Ron Klimkowski in the ninth inning.

Expos 4, Braves 3 at Atlanta (night game):
John Boccabella led off the 14th inning with a homer to give the Expos a 4-3 victory over the Braves. Steve Renko, the Expos' starting pitcher, hit for the circuit in the sixth to help himself to a 3-2 lead, but the Braves tied the score in their half when Ralph Garr doubled and Clete Boyer singled. In the 14th, Boccabella was the first batter to face Ron Herbel, who relieved as the Braves' third pitcher of the game. Mike Marshall was the winner, pitching the last six innings in relief of Renko.

Giants 8, Cubs 7 at Chicago (day game):
A dramatic three-run double by Fran Healy in the eighth inning and three-run homer by Willie McCovey in ninth enabled the red-hot Giants to defeat the Cubs, 8-7. The Cubs were leading, 8-2, when McCovey singled and Dick Dietz walked in the eighth. Phil Regan replaced Ken Holtzman and passed Al Gallagher. Healy then batted for Hal Lanier and doubled for his seventh hit in eight times at bat this season. In the ninth, after Ron Tompkins walked Tito Fuentes and Willie Mays, the Cubs called on Earl Stephenson, who got one strike on McCovey before the Giants' slugger smashed his homer. Ron Santo hit his second homer of the game in the Cubs' half of the ninth.

Reds 5, Pirates 4 at Cincinnati (day game):
A three-run rally after two were out in the seventh inning enabled the Reds to squeeze out a 5-4 victory over the Pirates. The Reds were trailing, 3-2, when Ty Cline opened the seventh with a single. After the next two batters were retired, Tony Perez singled to score Cline. Lee May and Bernie Carbo followed with singles, plating Perez, and Tommy Helms then doubled to drive in May with what proved to be the winning run.

Padres 4, Astros 2 at Houston (night game):
Nate Colbert hit a single, double and triple to lead the Padres to a 4-2 victory over the Astros. A single by Dave Campbell, Colbert's triple and a single by Ollie Brown gave the Padres two runs in the first inning. Colbert scored again after his single in the sixth. However, he pulled a muscle running out his double in the eighth and was forced to leave the game.

Phillies 1, Mets 0 at Philadelphia (night game):
Backed by Deron Johnson, who hit a homer in the second inning, Rick Wise outdueled Gary Gentry and pitched the Phillies to a 1-0 victory over the Mets.

Cardinals 5, Dodgers 0 at St. Louis (day game):
The leading candidate for comeback of the year honors, Steve Carlton boosted his record to 7-2 by pitching the Cardinals to a 5-0 victory over the Dodgers. Last season at this time, the southpaw had won only two games while losing five.
