Today's scores and summaries:

Senators 8, Red Sox 6 at Boston (night game):
After scoring five runs in the first inning, the Senators lost their lead but then came back to defeat the Red Sox, 8-6. Frank Howard hit his first homer at Fenway Park since 1969, connecting with a man on base, to feature the Nats' opening burst. However, the Red Sox picked up a run in their half and went ahead with five more in the third on circuit clouts by Carl Yastrzemski and Billy Conigliaro. The Senators tied the score in the sixth and went ahead again to stay when Joe Foy and Paul Casanova hit doubles in the seventh.

Braves 9, Expos 4 at Montreal (day game):
After taking the lead with a two-run homer by Orlando Cepeda in the fifth inning, the Braves iced their 9-4 victory over when Felix Millan drove in three runs with a bases-loaded double in the ninth. Millan also scored on a single by Gill Garrido.

Phillies 2, Reds 1 at Philadelphia (night game):
The Phillies were held to only one hit by Gary Nolan, but it was a homer by Denny Doyle after a pass to Deron Johnson in the second inning and beat the Reds, 2-1. Nolan was lifted for a pinch-hitter after hurling seven innings and the Phillies collected one more hit, a single by Joe Lis, off Wayne Granger in the eighth. Rick Wise, who was the winner, yielded the Reds' run in the fifth on an infield hit by Lee May, double by Bernie Carbo and sacrifice fly by Tommy Helms.

Padres 12, Cardinals 3 at St. Louis (night game):
Cito Gaston and Dave Campbell batted in four runs apiece as the Padres defeated the Cardinals, 12-3, to gain their first victory over Bob Gibson, who had vanquished the San Diego club seven straight times previously in his career. Gibson, who was knocked out in the fourth inning, gave up nine hits and was charged with seven runs.
