Today's scores and summaries:

Orioles 3, Indians 2 at Baltimore (night game):
Batting only .175 before the game, Elrod Hendricks broke loose with three singles to lead the Orioles to a 3-2 victory over the Indians. Hendricks drove in the Orioles' first two runs with singles in the second and fourth innings. Merv Rettenmund singled in the sixth, raced to third on Hendricks' third hit and continued home to score the winning run when Vada Pinson bobbled the ball in right field.

Red Sox 3, Senators 2 at Boston (night game):
Reserve catcher Bob Montgomery, playing in his first game of the season, collected three singles and batted in the winning run in the sixth inning as the Red Sox defeated the Senators, 3-2. Billy Conigliaro, who doubled, scored on Montgomery's hit to break a 2-2 tie.

White Sox 7, Royals 2 at Chicago (night game):
The White Sox erupted for six runs in the sixth inning in their biggest offensive outburst of the season and Wilbur Wood pitched his second straight complete game to defeat the Royals, 7-2. The White Sox sent 11 men to bat in the big inning and accomplished their scoring on four hits, three walks, two errors and a sacrifice fly.

Yankees 2, Tigers 1 at Detroit (night game):
The Tigers, who had won seven straight games, were stopped on their streak by the Yankees, 2-1. Two walks and a two-out double by Roy White produced the Yankees' runs in the eighth inning.

Twins 4, Brewers 1 at Milwaukee (night game):
Striking out 12, Bert Blyleven scattered eight hits and pitched the Twins to a 4-1 victory over the Brewers. After the Brewers tied the score at 1-1 in the fourth on a double by Bill Voss and single by Johnny Briggs, the Twins went ahead to stay in the fifth on singles by Cesar Tovar and Rod Carew, a throwing error by Dave May and sacrifice fly by Tony Oliva.

Angels 7, A's 5 at Oakland (night game):
Jim Fregosi, who had been out of action with a bad foot, came off the bench as a pinch-hitter in the 12th inning and delivered a two-run homer to give the Angels a 7-5 victory over the Athletics. The Angels trailed, 5-0, before coming back and finally tying the score on a homer by Jim Spencer in the ninth. Alex Johnson, back in the Angels' lineup after having been in manager Lefty Phillips' doghouse, singled in the 12th for his third hit of the game. Two were out when Fregosi smashed his homer.

Giants 6, Dodgers 4 at Los Angeles (night game):
Chris Speier and Willie Mays, who hit back-to-back homers in the fifth inning, each drove a run across the plate in the ninth to enable the Giants to defeat the Dodgers, 6-4. Mays started the night with a single and scored on a homer by Dick Dietz. After the socks by Speier and Mays in the fifth, the Dodgers rallied to tie the score with the aid of a single by Maury Wills for his 2,000th major league hit. In the Giants' ninth, George Foster singled and, when Jimmy Rosario bunted, both runners were safe on Joe Moeller's throwing error. Speier then broke the tie with a single and Mays added an extra run with a sacrifice fly.

Expos 11, Braves 1 at Montreal (night game):
While Bill Stoneman pitched a two-hitter, the Expos ripped into Pat Jarvis and two successors for 12 hits and routed the Braves, 11-1. The defeat was the seventh in succession for Jarvis, who had yet to win this season. The Expos knocked out Jarvis in the third inning when they scored six runs with the aid of doubles by Rusty Staub, Bob Bailey and Jim Gosger.

Phillies 3, Mets 2 at New York (night game):
After rallying to tie the game with two out in the ninth inning, the Phillies scored again on a single by Larry Bowa in the 12th to defeat the Mets, 3-2. In the ninth, Tony Taylor singled, Willie Montanez tripled and Deron Johnson singled to save the Phils from defeat. Tim McCarver doubled in the 12th and scored on a two-out single by Bowa, who made up for his 12th-inning error in the previous night's game that enabled the Mets to defeat the Phillies, 5-4.

Pirates 2, Reds 0 at Pittsburgh (night game):
Willie Stargell hit his 15th homer of the season after a single by Roberto Clemente in the sixth inning to enable the Pirates to defeat the Reds, 2-0. Steve Blass, who struck out 11, his career high, held the Reds to five hits in posting his first victory since April 28.

[DH] Astros 2, Padres 1 (night game) / Astros 8, Padres 0 at San Diego (night game):
Larry Dierker held the Padres to one hit -- a single by Ollie Brown with two out in the seventh inning -- and posted an 8-0 victory as the Astros completed the sweep of a twi-night doubleheader after winning the first game, 2-1. In the opener, righthander Al Santorini started for the Padres against an Astro batting order that was stacked with seven lefthanded swingers. However, after Santorini retired the first batter, manager Preston Gomez of the Padres brought southpaw Dave Roberts to the mound. Although the Astros made quick switches in their lineup, the Padres' strategic move worked until the ninth inning when the Astros broke a 1-1 tie with a run after two out on singles by Doug Rader, Jack Hiatt and Bob Watson, who batted for Wade Blasingame. Santorini also started the nightcap and this time pitched six innings. The Astros' attack included a triple by Johnny Edwards with the bases loaded in the eighth.

Cardinals 9, Cubs 4 at St. Louis (night game):
Julian Javier and Jerry McNertney collected seven hits between them and accounted for six runs batted in to lead the Cardinals to a 9-4 victory over the Cubs. In the seventh inning, with the Cubs leading, 4-3, Javier put the Cardinals ahead with a two-run single for his fourth hit of the game and McNertney followed with a homer. McNertney, who caught because Ted Simmons was attending his father's funeral in Dresden, Tenn., drove in two earlier runs with a pair of singles. The victory moved the Cards into first place in the N. L. East.
