Today's scores and summaries:

Red Sox 3, Yankees 2 at New York (night game):
Ray Culp drove in the decisive run in the ninth inning before needing help himself as the Red Sox defeated the Yankees, 3-2, to end their five-game losing streak and regain first place in the East division by four percentage points over the idle Orioles. In the ninth, Duane Josephson doubled and scored on a single by Culp to put the Red Sox ahead, 3-1. Culp was removed after Horace Clarke doubled in the Yankees' half. Sparky Lyle took over and struck out Thurman Munson, but Bobby Murcer singled, scoring Clarke. When Roy White followed with a single, Bobby Bolin relieved and saved the game, getting the last two outs.

Cubs 1, Reds 0 at Cincinnati (night game):
Ken Holtzman pitched the first no-hitter in the major leagues this season and second of his career with the Cubs to beat the Reds, 1-0.

Cardinals 7, Pirates 1 at Pittsburgh (night game):
The first pitcher in the N. L. to win 10 games this season, Steve Carlton worked out of turn for the Cardinals and matched his 1970 victory total by defeating the Pirates, 7-1. Last year, the southpaw had a 10-19 record. Mike Torrez was to have started, but Carlton volunteered because the Cards had lost the first two games of the series with the Pirates. Carlton not only pitched a seven-hitter, but drove in two runs with a double.

Braves 5, Astros 2 at Atlanta (night game):
Pat Jarvis, who was demoted to the bullpen after losing seven starts, gained his first victory of the season when the Braves defeated the Astros, 5-2. Jarvis replaced Jim Nash with one out in the first inning after the Astros had scored their runs and pitched 5 2/3 innings before being lifted for a pinch-hitter. The Braves tied the score in the second and went ahead when Hank Aaron came up as a pinch-hitter for Zoilo Versalles with the bases loaded in the fourth and doubled to drive in two runs.
