Today's scores and summaries:

Orioles 8, Twins 2 at Baltimore (night game):
Mark Belanger and Don Buford supplied big blows in the second inning when the Orioles scored five runs to defeat the Twins, 8-2. Frank Robinson singled, Boog Powell walked and Davey Johnson singled to produce the first run of the stanza. Belanger doubled, driving in Powell and Johnson. Buford followed with a homer to clinch the outcome.

Yankees 3, Angels 0 at California (night game):
Danny Cater had a perfect night at the plate with four hits, including his first homer of the season, as the Yankees defeated the Angels, 3-0. Mel Stottlemyre, who pitched a six-hitter, beat the Angels for the seventh straight time since losing last to the California club, 6-2, June 30, 1967.

Indians 5, White Sox 3 at Cleveland (night game):
Sam McDowell, who had a 1-5 record before finding himself, posted his fifth straight victory, pitching the Indians past the White Sox, 5-3. Roy Foster supported McDowell with a three-run homer in the second inning.

Tigers 8, Brewers 3 at Detroit (night game):
Four hits by Mickey Stanley, including a triple with the bases loaded, paced the Tigers to an 8-3 victory over the Brewers. In addition to driving in three runs, Stanley scored twice. Dalton Jones added a two-run homer to the Tigers' attack. Ron Theobald hit the first homer of his major league career for the Brewers.

Royals 4, Senators 2 at Kansas City (night game):
Paul Splittorff, making his first start since being called up from Omaha (American Association), received credit for his first major league victory when the Royals defeated the Senators, 4-2. The rookie lefthander yielded only five hits, but weakened and gave way to Ted Abernathy in the eighth inning. The Royals scored three of their runs in the third on a pass to Amos Otis with the bases loaded and a double by Ed Kirkpatrick.

Red Sox 5, A's 1 at Oakland (night game):
The three-hit pitching of Ray Culp, who struck out 11, made it easy for the Red Sox to defeat the Athletics, 5-1. Culp was deprived of a shutout when Dave Duncan homered in the eighth inning. The Red Sox had a two-run smash by Duane Josephson.

Braves 8, Cardinals 7 at Atlanta (night game):
The Cardinals again rallied for four runs to tie the score, as they did in the previous night's game, but this time they lost to the Braves in 10 innings, 8-7. Hank Aaron, Orlando Cepeda and Earl Williams smashed homers for the Braves to build up a 7-3 lead before the Cardinals pulled even in the eighth. However, in the 10th, Williams led off with a double. A sacrifice bunt by Zoilo Versalles moved pinch-runner Sonny Jackson to third. After an intentional pass to Mike Lum, Darrell Evans hit a deep fly to left-center field and Jackson scored after the catch.

Cubs 1, Pirates 0 at Chicago (day game):
Swinging into the teeth of a 20-mile wind, Joe Pepitone smashed a homer with two out in the 12th inning to give the Cubs a 1-0 victory over the Pirates. Ken Holtzman, who worked the route for the Cubs, allowed nine hits, but did not issue a pass and struck out 12. Pepitone's homer came off Mudcat Grant, who took over in the eighth in relief of Jim Nelson and gave up only one hit in 4 2/3 innings before Pepitone ended the game.

Astros 2, Reds 0 at Houston (night game):
The change in the Reds' fortunes since last year was emphasized when the defending champions suffered their seventh shutout of the season, losing to the Astros, 2-0. In 1970, the Reds were blanked only once in the entire campaign. Don Wilson applied the whitewash on a five-hitter. The Astros scored intially in the fourth inning when Jesus Alou singled, took third on a single by Joe Morgan and crossed the plate on a forceout by Cesar Cedeno. John Mayberry singled and Doug Rader tripled for the other run in the fifth.

Expos 10, Giants 3 at Montreal (night game):
The Expos erupted for 13 hits, including homers by Mack Jones, John Bateman and Rusty Staub, to trounce the slumping Giants, 10-3, behind the six-hit pitching of Bill Stoneman, who walked eight but struck out 13. Staub smashed his homer with two men on base in the sixth inning.

Mets 6, Padres 4 at New York (night game):
The Mets got off to a fast start with three runs in the first inning and went on to defeat the Padres, 6-4. Ed Kranepool accounted for the first two tallies with a bases-loaded single and the third run counted when Art Shamsky grounded into a double play. Shamsky homered in the third. Gary Gentry singled to drive in a run in the fifth and Jerry Grote, who broke out of his slump with three hits, singled for the Mets' final tally in the seventh. Gentry failed to finish, giving way in the eighth to Danny Frisella, who yielded four straight hits before checking the Padres' rally.

Dodgers 4, Phillies 2 at Philadelphia (night game):
Jim Brewer struck out four of six batters in the last two innings after relieving Bill Singer to safeguard the Dodgers' 4-2 victory over the Phillies. The Dodgers used singles by Tom Haller and Maury Wills, around a sacrifice by Singer, for a run in the fifth inning and added two more in the sixth when Dick Allen walked and Jim Lefebvre homered. Willie Montanez hit a two-run homer in the Phillies' half, but the Dodgers pulled away when Manny Mota, batting for Singer, walked with the bases loaded in the eighth.
