Today's scores and summaries:
Orioles 2, Twins 1 at Baltimore (night game):
Don Buford singled in the 10th inning and, with two out, scored from first base on a double by Frank Robinson to bring the Orioles a 2-1 victory over the Twins. Robinson scored the Orioles' initial run in the second inning, reaching base on an error and counting on a sacrifice and double by Andy Etchebarren. Leo Cardenas homered for the Twins in the sixth.
Angels 4, Yankees 3 at California (night game):
A defensive move by the Angels paid unexpected dividends when Tony Gonzalez drove in a run with a single in the ninth inning to defeat the Yankees, 4-3. Billy Cowan, who started in left field and hit a three-run homer in the seventh to give the Angels a 3-1 lead, left the game in favor of Gonzalez in the eighth. The Yankees rallied to tie the score in the ninth, but in the Angels' half, Gonzalez rapped a single with two out to score Ken Berry with the winning run.
Indians 3, White Sox 1 at Cleveland (night game):
Graig Nettles collected three hits and scored two runs to enable the Indians to defeat the White Sox, 3-1. Alan Foster held the White Sox scoreless on four hits until the ninth when he gave up a run on a walk and two singles before Ed Farmer relieved with two out and fanned Tom Egan to end the game.
Tigers 3, Brewers 0 at Detroit (night game):
Norm Cash homered with two men on base in the first inning and Les Cain took it from there to pitch the Tigers to a 3-0 victory over the Brewers. Cain allowed only four hits and turned in his first complete game of the season.
Royals 5, Senators 4 at Kansas City (night game):
Chuck Harrison, appearing in the Royals' starting lineup for the first time since being recalled from Omaha (American Association), drove in two runs with a bases-loaded single in the ninth inning to beat the Senators, 5-4. A walk to Paul Schaal, double by Amos Otis and intentional pass to Lou Piniella set the stage for Harrison's winning hit.
A's 6, Red Sox 1 at Oakland (night game):
Chuck Dobson, who was sidelined for almost the entire first month of the season before stepping into the Athletics' rotation, gained his fourth straight victory, defeating the Red Sox, 6-1. Dobson also drove in two runs with a double and single. Sal Bando and Dick Green hit homers in the A's attack. Dobson did not yield a hit until two out in the fifth inning when Billy Conigliaro homered for the Bosox' run.
Braves 8, Cardinals 3 at Atlanta (night game):
The Braves exploded for six runs in the fifth inning and defeated the Cardinals, 8-3. Marv Staehle and Ralph Garr singled and Hank Aaron doubled to produce the initial run of the stanza, tying the score at 3-3. After a walk to Orlando Cepeda, Earl Williams was hit by a pitch, forcing in Garr. Mike Lum singled for another run and two more scored on a single by Zoilo Versalles, who later crossed the plate himself on an error.
Cubs 3, Pirates 1 at Chicago (day game):
Entering the ranks of 10-game winners, Fergie Jenkins pitched the Cubs to a 3-1 victory over the Pirates. The Cubs counted twice in the second inning on a pass to Paul Popovich, triple by Brock Davis and sacrifice fly by Jenkins. A walk to Ron Santo and singles by Popovich and Davis added the other run in the sixth. Willie Stargell hit his 20th homer of the season for the Pirates.
Reds 2, Astros 1 at Houston (night game):
A homer by Johnny Bench broke a 1-1 tie in the eighth inning and carried the Reds to a 2-1 victory over the Astros. This was the fourth time this season that Jack Billingham, the Astros' loser, had been defeated by a score of 2-1.
Expos 4, Giants 0 at Montreal (night game):
With their power gone in a slump, the Giants managed only one hit off Steve Renko and lost to the Expos, 4-0, for their seventh defeat in the last eight games. Dick Dietz singled in the second inning for the Giants' safety off Renko, who posted the first shutout to the credit of the Expos' staff this season. Renko also drove in the Expos' first run and only one he needed with a double in the fifth inning.
Mets 4, Padres 2 at New York (night game):
Rallying for four runs in the eighth inning, the Mets defeated the Padres, 4-2, and moved into first place in the East division by 12 percentage points over the Cardinals. A homer by Nate Colbert in the second inning and three singles in the fourth gave the Padres a 2-0 lead against Tom Seaver. However, in the eighth, a single by Jerry Grote and triples by Don Hahn and Bud Harrelson tied the score. After an intentional pass to Ken Boswell, Ken Singleton singled to send the Mets in front. Walks to Art Shamsky and Bob Aspromonte then forced in the final marker.
Phillies 9, Dodgers 4 at Philadelphia (night game):
Staked to an early lead, Ken Reynolds gained his first major league victory when the Phillies defeated the Dodgers, 9-4. The rookie lefthander needed help from Woodie Fryman in the eighth inning. The Phillies struck for four runs in the first on singles by Larry Bowa and Terry Harmon, a wild throw by Claude Osteen on a grounder by Willie Montanez and a homer by Deron Johnson. Byron Browne homered with man on base in the third and Don Money added a circuit clout in the seventh. Bill Russell of the Dodgers struck out five consecutive times to tie a major league record for futility at the plate.
