Today's scores and summaries:

Orioles 8, White Sox 5 at Baltimore (night game):
Homers by Boog Powell, Elrod Hendricks and Don Buford accounted for seven runs and powered the Orioles to an 8-5 victory over the White Sox. Powell connected with a man on base in the third inning. Hendricks and Buford belted their homers for five runs in the sixth. Hendricks' blow followed a pass to Brooks Robinson. Then, after a walk to Davey Johnson and single by Mark Belanger, Buford hit for the circuit.

Angels 4, Senators 2 at California (night game):
The majors' biggest loser, Denny McLain was tagged with his sixth straight defeat and 11th of the season when the Angels beat the Senators, 4-2. The Angels decided the outcome with three runs in the fifth inning. Jim Fregosi singled, stole second, continued to third when no one covered on catcher Paul Casanova's throw and scored on a sacrifice fly by Tony Gonzalez. Ken McMullen followed with a homer. The Angels' final run then scored on a double by John Stephenson and single by Ken Berry.

Indians 2, Brewers 1 at Cleveland (night game):
Chris Chambliss, the Indians' rookie first baseman, smashed a two-run homer in the seventh inning to beat the Brewers, 2-1. Vada Pinson opened the stanza with a single and, after Ray Fosse struck out for the third time, Chambliss connected for his drive off Marty Pattin, who was loser on a four-hit effort.

Tigers 4, Twins 1 at Detroit (night game):
Willie Horton drove in two runs with a homer and double as the Tigers defeated the Twins, 4-1, behind the six-hit pitching of Mike Kilkenny, who posted his first victory of the season. The Twins picked up their run in the second inning on a walk and two singles, but Horton tied the score with his circuit clout in the Tigers' half. Al Kaline walked in the third and two runs followed on doubles by Dalton Jones and Horton. Dick McAuliffe added the final tally with a homer in the eighth.

Royals 6, Red Sox 3 at Kansas City (night game):
Luis Tiant had a disastrous debut in a Boston uniform, giving up four runs in the first inning, as the Red Sox lost to the Royals 6-3. The former Twins' pitcher walked three of the first four batters he faced to load the bases and Cookie Rojas cleared the sacks with a triple. Chuck Harrison followed with a sacrifice fly to score Rojas. Tiant had been at Louisville (International) before joining the Red Sox.

Yankees 6, A's 4 at Oakland (night game):
A four-run rally in the eighth inning carried the Yankees to a 6-4 victory over the Athletics. With one out, Jerry Kenney tripled and Bobby Murcer doubled. After walking Roy White, Catfish Hunter gave way to Bob Locker. An infield hit by Danny Cater filled the bases and Thurman Munson delivered two runs with a single. Following an intentional pass to Jim Lyttle, Gene Michael produced the last run with a sacrifice fly.

Reds 4, Cubs 3 at Chicago (day game):
Three homers enabled the Reds to come from behind to defeat the Cubs, 4-3. Jim Hickman hit a round-tripper for the Cubs, who had a 3-0 lead before the Reds rallied to tie the score in the sixth. Back-to-back homers by Tommy Helms and Lee May produced the first two runs. After two out, George Foster singled, stole second and counted the tying tally on a single by Hal McRae. Tony Perez then won the game with a circuit clout in the eighth.

Astros 5, Braves 4 at Houston (night game):
Marv Staehle's failure to cover second base promptly on what would have been the third out enabled the Astros to score a run in the ninth inning to defeat the Braves, 5-4. Triples by Jesus Alou and Roger Metzger helped the Astros take an early 4-1 lead, but the Braves rallied to tie the score in the ninth. Jim Wynn singled with one out in the Astros' half and took third on a single by Johnny Edwards. Metzger struck out. Norm Miller then grounded to Zoilo Versalles at short and when Staehle was late covering on the attempted forceout, Cesar Geronimo, running for Edwards, slid into the base safely as Wynn scored the winning run.

Dodgers 12, Expos 1 at Montreal (night game):
Dick Allen, Wes Parker, Maury Wills and Willie Davis each drove in two runs in the second inning when the Dodgers exploded against Jim Britton to wallop the Expos, 12-1. Allen and Parker ignited the outburst with homers off Britton, who was making his first major league start since May 1, 1969. Allen hit a sacrifice fly and Parker singled for their second RBIs of the stanza. Wills and Davis drove in their runs with singles. Allen homered again with a man on base in the seventh. Rusty Staub saved the Expos from being shutout by connecting for the circuit in the ninth.

Giants 3, Mets 2 at New York (night game):
Hal Lanier doubled to lead off the 10th inning and scored from second base with two out on a wild pitch by Tug McGraw to give the Giants a 3-2 victory over the Mets. Willie McCovey homered with a man on base for the Giants in the fourth and Dave Marshall tied the score with a pinch-homer for the Mets in the ninth.

Padres 2, Phillies 1 at Philadelphia (night game):
Although held to only two hits, the Padres were able to beat the Phillies, 2-1. Nate Colbert and Ollie Brown walked in the second inning and, after Ivan Murrell forced Brown, Colbert taking third, Ed Spiezio drove in a run with a sacrifice fly. The Padres' other tally followed in the third when Dave Roberts was safe on an error, Enzo Hernandez sacrificed and Cito Gaston singled. The Phillies collected eight hits off Roberts, but scored only in the eighth on a pass, a single by Terry Harmon and sacrifice fly by Willie Montanez.

Pirates 11, Cardinals 4 at St. Louis (night game):
The Cardinals twice passed Gene Alley intentionally to get at Dock Ellis, but the Pittsburgh pitcher singled on both occasions, driving in the Pirates' first three runs in an 11-4 victory. Ellis' first single with the bases loaded produced two runs in the second inning. An infield hit, again with the sacks jammed, resulted in his third RBI in the fourth and the Pirates went on from there to score three more runs. Willie Stargell homered in the seventh and the Pirates added four runs in the ninth to ice the victory, moving them into first place in the East division.
