Twins 3, Indians 1 at Cleveland (night game):
A three-run homer by Tony Oliva in the first inning provided the Twins with a 3-1 victory over the Indians. Jim Perry, who pitched a six-hitter for the Twins and struck out 11, was deprived of a shutout when the Indians scored in the ninth on doubles by Chris Chambliss and Ted Uhlaender.

Tigers 4, White Sox 3 at Detroit (night game):
Tony Taylor, appearing in his second game for the Tigers since being acquired from the Phillies, drove in a run with a two-out double in the 10th inning to beat the White Sox, 4-3. Bill Melton homered for the White Sox runs in the first. Jim Northrup, making his first start in the outfield for the Tigers since pulling a leg muscle June 2, rapped two doubles and a single to help tie the score before Taylor batted for him in the sixth. With two out in the 10th, Al Kaline drew a pass from Vicente Romo. When Gates Brown batted for Fred Scherman, Don Eddy replaced Romo. Ike Brown then went to the plate and walked. Steve Kealey took the mound as the third nitcher of the inning for the White Sox and was tagged for Taylor's double.

Royals 4, Yankees 1 at Kansas City (night game):
The Royals erupted for four runs in the sixth inning and defeated the Yankees. 4-1. Mike Kekich, who had been working on a three-hit shutout, was lifted after the Royals scored their first run on singles by Paul Schaal, Amos Otis and Chuck Harrison. Gary Waslewski, in relief, was greeted with a safe bunt by Lou Piniella and then uncorked a wild pitch, allowing Otis to score. Bob Oliver, back in the Royals' lineup after being benched for six days because of a slump, followed with a two-run single to put the game out of the Yankees' reach.

Cubs 3, Braves 2 at Chicago (day game):
Coming out of the bullpen, Phil Regan started a game for the first time since August 12, 1967, and gained the victory when Joe Pepitone homered for the Cubs with two men on base and two out in the eighth inning to beat the Braves, 3-2. Triples by Bob Didier and Felix Millan resulted in the Braves' run off Regan. In the eighth, after Paul Popovich grounded out as a pinch-hitter for Regan, Don Kessinger walked and stopped at second on a single by Glenn Beckert. Billy Williams forced Beckert before Pepitone came to bat and hit his homer off Phil Niekro.

Astros 5, Pirates 4 at Houston (night game):
A walk to Joe Morgan with the bases loaded and two out in the ninth inning forced Jim Wynn home and gave the Astros a 5-4 victory over the Pirates. Wynn drew a pass to open the stanza and John Mayberry singled with one out. After Norm Miller forced Mayberry, Jesus Alou walked to load the bases. Dave Giusti then relieved Jim Nelson and passed Morgan on four straight pitches.
