Today's scores and summaries:
Brewers 6, Orioles 5 at Baltimore (night game):
Coming from behind after trailing, 4-0, the Brewers caught up with the Orioles and then won, 6-5, on a homer by Johnny Briggs in the ninth inning. Frank and Brooks Robinson each connected for the circuit with a man on base in the first to give the Orioles their early lead and Robinson drove in another run with a single in the fourth. However, the Brewers fought back to tie the score with the aid of round-trippers by Bill Parsons and Tommy Harper before Briggs teed off on a pitch by Pete Richert in the ninth.
Angels 5, Red Sox 4 at California (night game):
Pinch-hitting in the ninth inning, Syd O'Brien came through with a two-run homer to bring the Angels a 5-4 victory over the Red Sox. Joe Lahoud and Reggie Smith homered for the Red Sox. Alex Johnson, starting in the Angels' outfield for the first time since June 4, collected three hits, driving in one run and scoring another. In the ninth, pinch-hitter Roger Repoz walked and was sacrificed to second before O'Brien batted for Tony Gonzalez and ended the game.
Twins 5, Indians 3 at Cleveland (night game):
Rich Reese, Tony Oliva and Brant Alyea smashed homers for the Twins in a 5-3 victory over the Indians. Bert Blyleven, who started for the Twins, was kayoed in the eighth inning after giving up a run on singles by Eddie Leon, Vada Pinson and Frank Baker. With two out, Tom Hall walked Ray Fosse and Chris Chambliss to force in another tally. Roy Foster, who had hit a homer for the Indians in the seventh, came up next with the bases loaded, but Ray Corbin retired him on an infield fly to end the threat.
White Sox 6, Tigers 1 at Detroit (night game):
A grand-slam homer by Bill Melton, plus solo swats by Rich McKinney and Mike Hershberger, carried the White Sox to a 6-1 victory over the Tigers. Mike Kilkenny, pitching for the Tigers, allowed only two hits until the sixth when Walt Williams and Hershberger singled and Rick Reichardt was safe on an error to load the bases for Melton's smash. McKinney came up next and also homered. Hershberger previously had hit for the circuit in the fourth. Gates Brown, who tripled for the Tigers in the eighth, set an A. L. record for most pinch-hits in a career with 77.
Yankees 2, Royals 1 at Kansas City (night game):
Steve Kline not only pitched a five-hitter but also singled ahead of a homer by Bobby Murcer in the sixth inning as the Yankees defeated the Royals, 2-1. The Royals did not score until the the ninth when Amos Otis tripled and Ed Kirkpatrick drove him home with a sacrifice fly.
A's 8, Senators 2 at Oakland (night game):
Bert Campaneris hit a three-run homer and Mike Epstein also drove in three runs with two homers and a single as the Athletics defeated the Senators, 8-2.
Cubs 3, Braves 1 at Chicago (day game):
Bill Hands doled out three singles, retired the last 23 batters in succession and pitched the Cubs to a 3-1 victory over the Braves. All three of the Braves' hits came in the second inning when their run scored as Earl Williams grounded into a double play. The Cubs loaded the bases on walks to Don Kessinger and Billy Wiliams around a single by Glenn Beckert in the first and scored two runs on a single by Joe Pepitone. Singles by Ron Santo, Johnny Callison and Chris Cannizzaro added the final run in the fourth.
Pirates 3, Astros 0 at Houston (night game):

Padres 3, Expos 1 at Montreal (night game):

After his run-scoring double, Stahl reached third when Rusty Staub booted the ball in right field and crossed the plate on a sacrifice fly by Angel Bravo. Cito Gaston homered for the Padres' initial run in the first and the Expos tied the score when Bob Bailey singled, Gary Sutherland walked and John Boccabella singled in the seventh.
Dodgers 2, Mets 0 at New York (day game):

Ken Henderson started the scoring with a homer in the second inning. Al Gallagher, who had been in an 0-for-27 slump, broke out with a two-run single in the fourth when the Giants iced their decision by scoring four times.

The Cardinals' first three hits off Jim Merritt were homers and that was enough to assure a 6-1 victory over the Reds. Jose Cardenal and Ted Sizemore connected for solo swats in the second and third innings, respectively, and Jim Beauchamp homered after a walk to Cardenal in the fourth. The defeat was the eighth straight for Merritt. Reggie Cleveland held the Reds to three hits, including a homer by Lee May, as the Cardinals snapped their seven-game losing streak.
