Today's scores and summaries:

White Sox 5, Royals 1 at Chicago (night game):
After giving up a homer by Fredie Patek to lead off the first inning, Tommy John scattered five hits over the remainder of the route and pitched the White Sox to a 5-1 victory over the Royals. The White Sox scored two of their runs on wild pitches, one by Jim Rooker, who suffered his sixth straight defeat, and one by Jim York.

Brewers 3, Angels 2 at Milwaukee (night game):
Roberto Pena, who tied the score with a run-scoring single in the ninth inning, singled again with the bases loaded in the 10th to give the Brewers a 3-2 victory over the Angels. The Brewers' only hit off Rudy May in the first eight innings was a single by Dave May, leading to an unearned run in the third. In the ninth, Tommy Harper singled and, after a sacrifice, Pena knotted the count with a single. Dave LaRoche, in relief of May, walked three batters in the 10th before Pena delivered his winning hit.

A's 3, Twins 2 at Minnesota (night game):
Although Vida Blue gave up seven hits, more than in any of his previous victories, the Athletics' sensational lefthander struck out 13 and and beat the Twins, 3-2. The triumph was the fifth in succession for Blue and his 15th of the season. The Twins scored their runs in the third inning to take a 2-1 lead. Rich Reese tripled and counted on a single by Ray Corbin. After forcing Corbin, Cesar Tovar stole second and scored on a single by Harmon Killebrew. The A's tied the game in the sixth and scored the deciding run in the seventh on a wild throw by Mitterwald.

Orioles 7, Senators 2 at Washington (night game):
The Orioles pounded Denny McLain for 16 hits in eight innings, including four apiece by Boog Powell and Paul Blair, to defeat the Senators, 7-2. Powell and Frank Robinson, who had two hits, each drove in three runs. The loss was the eighth in succession for McLain and his 13th of the season against only four victories.

[DH] Braves 6, Expos 4 (night game) / Expos 5, Braves 3 at Atlanta (night game):
The Braves smashed four homers in one inning and won the first game of a twi-night doubleheader, 6-4, but the Expos came back to capture a 5-3 victory in the second game. The Braves were losing the lidlifter, 4-1, before their slugging explosion in the eighth inning. Mike Lum led off with a homer and, after one out, Hal King also hit for the circuit. After a walk to Ralph Garr, Sonny Jackson popped up, but Hank Aaron and Darrell Evans followed with successive round-trippers to tie the Braves' all-time record for most homers in one inning. The Braves also had a previous homer in the game by Garr, while Gary Sutherland hit one for the Expos. In the nightcap, the situation was reversed with the Braves holding a 3-0 lead before the Expos picked up a pair in the sixth, one run scoring on a boundary belt by Bob Bailey. The Expos then rallied for three runs in the eighth on a double by Jim Fairey, single by Jim Gosger and doubles by Ron Fairly and Ron Hunt.

Phillies 5, Reds 3 at Cincinnati (night game):
Pitching in relief, Jim Merritt suffered his ninth straight defeat when Willie Montanez batted in two runs with a triple in the 12th inning to give the Phillies a 5-3 victory over the Reds. Merritt, the Reds' fifth pitcher of the game, gave up a single by Larry Bowa to open the 12th. After a sacrifice by Tim McCarver and intentional pass to Deron Johnson, Montanez hit his triple off the luckless lefthander.

Dodgers 4, Cardinals 0 at Los Angeles (night game):
The Dodgers spoiled Bob Gibson's return from the disabled list by defeating the Cardinals' ace, 4-0, behind the pitching of Bob O'Brien, who posted the first shutout of his major league career in his first start. O'Brien had one previous victory in relief. The Dodgers scored initially in the first inning when Willie Crawford tripled and Willie Davis singled. A single by Crawford, double by Davis and single by Dick Allen added a pair in the sixth. After Gibson left the game, Davis homered off Rudy Arroyo for the last run in the eighth.

Pirates 6, Mets 0 at Pittsburgh (night game):
Willie Stargell hit his 25th homer and Dock Ellis gained his ninth straight victory and 11th in 14 decisions as the Pirates defeated the Mets, 6-0. Stargell hit his homer with a man on base in the fifth inning.
