Today's scores and summaries:

[DH] Indians 9, Red Sox 3 (night game) / Red Sox 2, Indians 0 at Boston (night game):
Ending a personal four-game losing streak, Sonny Siebert gained his 10th victory of the season and 100th of his major league career when the Red Sox won the nightcap of a doubleheader, 2-0, after the Indians erupted for seven runs in the sixth inning to capture the opener, 9-3. The Indians loaded the bases on two hits and an error and Frank Baker cleared the sacks with a double. Four more runs followed on two walks, two more errors, a single by Graig Nettles and double by Chris Chambliss. George Scott won the nightcap for Siebert with a two-run homer in the fourth inning.

White Sox 11, Royals 6 at Chicago (night game):
An eight-run explosion in the second inning propelled the White Sox to an 11-6 victory over the Royals. Carlos May was hit by a pitch, Tom Egan walked, Luis Alvarado beat out a bunt and Tom Bradley was safe on an error as the first run scored. That sparked the White Sox, who followed with a single by Walt Williams, double by Jay Johnstone and single by Rich McKinney for five more runs before Bill Melton capped the outburst with a homer to score behind McKinney. Until Melton connected, Dick Drago had worked 88 innings without serving a gopher pitch.

Twins 10, A's 1 at Minnesota (night game):
Jim Perry pitched a three-hitter and the Twins smashed four homers to beat the Athletics, 10-1. Rich Reese started the slugging with a round-tripper in the second inning. Tony Oliva connected in the third and Harmon Killebrew and Reese homered in succession in the sixth. Reggie Jackson saved the A's from being shutout with a circuit clout in the seventh.

[DH] Tigers 7, Yankees 4 (day game) / Yankees 2, Tigers 1 at New York (day game):
After rallying for five runs in the ninth inning to win the first game of a doubleheader, 7-4, the Tigers succumbed to the pitching of Stan Bahnsen and lost the second game to the Yankees, 2-1. Les Cain, who started the opener for the Tigers, pitched hitless ball before a sore shoulder forced his departure after walking Gene Michael in the fifth inning. The Yankees proceeded to take a 3-2 lead. However, in the ninth, a single by Gates Brown and homer by Dick McAuliffe put the Tigers ahead and they added three more runs, after loading the bases, on an infield out by Al Kaline and single by Jim Price. Ron Woods homered in the Yankees' half. In the nightcap, the Yankees scored both their runs in the first inning on a double by Jerry Kenney, single by Bobby Murcer, a stolen base and single by Jake Gibbs. The Tigers' run counted in the third on a single by Mickey Stanley, two wild pitches and a sacrifice fly by Ed Brinkman.

[DH] Senators 8, Orioles 6 (night game) / Orioles 2, Senators 0 at Washington (night game):
Led by Dave Nelson and Don Mincher, who had three hits apiece, the Senators won the first game of a doubleheader, 8-6, but the Orioles came back to gain a 2-0 victory in the second game behind the pitching of Grant Jackson and Tom Dukes. Mike Cuellar, seeking to extend his nine-game winning streak, started the opener for the Orioles and was chased in the fourth inning when the Senators scored three runs to tie the game at 4-4. Two counted on a homer by Mincher. The Senators then pulled out to an 8-4 lead, but had to use four pitchers in the ninth to put down an Orioles' rally. Grant Jackson, starting for only the first time this season, pitched 6 2/3 innings in the nightcap before needing help from Dukes. Merv Rettenmund rapped a homer for the Orioles.

Braves 4, Expos 0 at Atlanta (night game):
While Ron Reed pitched a three-hitter, the Braves took advantage of three walks and three wild pitches by Steve Renko to score all their runs in the third inning and post a 9-0 victory over the Expos. The Braves also had a single by Sonny Jackson, double by Darrell Evans and single by Marty Perez in their scoring stanza. Renko's three wild pitches in one inning tied the N. L. record.

Reds 6, Phillies 1 at Cincinnati (night game):
Pete Rose collected three hits and George Foster and Lee May drove in two runs apiece as the Reds defeated the Phillies, 6-1. Gary Nolan, who pitched a six-hitter for the Reds, lost his bid for a shutout when the Phillies scored an unearned run in the ninth inning.

Cardinals 6, Dodgers 5 at Los Angeles (night game):
Lou Brock, Joe Torre and Jerry McNertney rapped three hits apiece to pace the Cardinals to a 6-5 victory over the Dodgers. Jose Cardenal singled in the sixth inning, stole second and scored what proved to be the winning run on a double by Brock.

Mets 3, Pirates 2 at Pittsburgh (night game):
Danny Frisella relieved in the ninth inning and saved a victory for Charlie Williams as the Mets defeated the Pirates, 3-2. Williams was working on a three-hit shutout and retired the first two batters in the ninth before the Pirates erupted to score their runs on a single by Roberto Clemente, double by Willie Stargell and single by Al Oliver. Frisella then took over and retired Richie Hebner on a fly to end the game.

Astros 4, Padres 2 at San Diego (night game):
A three-run triple by Joe Morgan with two out in the sixth inning carried the Astros to a 4-2 victory over the Padres. All three runs were unearned. Doug Rader opened the stanza with a single. Johnny Edwards grounded to Enzo Hernandez and when Garry Jestadt dropped the throw to second, both runners were safe. After Roger Metzger walked, Ken Forsch struck out and Jim Wynn forced Rader at the plate, but Morgan then came through with his triple.

Giants 2, Cubs 0 at San Francisco (night game):
After 22 relief appearances, John Cumberland drew his first start of the season and was a winner when the Giants defeated the Cubs, 2-0. Cumberland ran into trouble in the ninth inning, walking two batters with two out, but Jerry Johnson relieved and struck out Ramon Webster on three pitches to save the game. Cumberland yielded three hits. Fergie Jenkins, who was the loser, allowed only two in seven innings of work. Passes to Hal Lanier in the sixth and Willie Mays in the seventh led to Giants' tallies.
