Orioles 7, Red Sox 3 at Boston (night game):
The Orioles shattered a tie with four runs in the ninth inning and beat the Red Sox, 7-3. Merv Rettenmund walked, Don Buford singled and Paul Blair tripled to break the deadlock. The Orioles then added two more runs before the stanza ended when Frank Robinson was hit by a pitch, Boog Powell singled, Brooks Robinson forced Frank Robinson and Elrod Hendricks singled.
White Sox 2, Angels 0 at Chicago (night game):
The White Sox scored two runs in the first inning and made them stand up for a 2-0 victory over the Angels. Walt Williams beat out a bunt to open the first and was forced by Rich McKinney. After Rick Reichardt walked, Carlos May and Tom Egan hit consecutive run-scoring singles.
Tigers 6, Indians 1 at Detroit (day game):
Bill Gilbreth, making his first major league start one day after his arrival from Toledo (International), pitched the Tigers to a 6-1 victory over the Indians. Willie Horton and Al Kaline smashed homers for the Tigers, Kaline's clout coming as a pinch-hitter with a man on base in the eighth inning.
Brewers 3, Twins 1 at Minnesota (night game):
Homers by Johnny Briggs and Tommy Harper carried the Brewers to a 3-1 victory over the Twins. Briggs connected for the circuit in the second inning. The Twins tied the score in the seventh on singles by George Mitterwald and Cesar Tovar and a grounder by Rod Carew. The Brewers then gained their winning margin in the eighth when Ted Kubiak walked and Harper hit his homer.
Yankees 12, Senators 2 at New York (night game):
Felipe Alou, Ron Blomberg and Jake Gibbs batted in eight runs among them as the Yankees trounced the Senators, 12-2. Alou accounted for four RBIs with a triple and single. Blomberg and Gibbs each homered with a man on base. Blomberg's drive in the fourth inning was the first of the rookie outfielder's major league career. Ron Swoboda made his first appearance in a Yankees' uniform after being obtained from the Expos.
A's 7, Royals 0 at Oakland (night game):
With Vida Blue's mother, brother and four sisters in the stands, seeing him pitch for first time in a pro game, the Athletics' sensational southpaw beat the Royals, 7-0. Blue's family was flown from Mansfield, La., as guests of Oakland owner Charlie Finley. Sal Bando drove in three of the A's runs with a pair of singles. Joe Rudi rapped a two run single and Mike Epstein contributed a homer to the attack.
[DH] Braves 8, Reds 6 (night game) / Braves 10, Reds 3 at Atlanta (night game):
The Braves came from behind to win the first game of a twi-night doubleheader, 8-6, and then scored 10 runs in the first two innings of the second game to beat the Reds again, 10-3. The Braves, after losing the lead and falling behind in the lidlifter, tied the score at 6-6 in the seventh inning on run-scoring doubles by Earl Williams and Hal King. Luckless Jim Merritt, pitching in relief for the Reds, then drew his 10th straight defeat when the Braves scored twice in the eighth on a single by Marty Perez, double by Ralph Garr and single by Oscar Brown. Williams batted in four of the Braves' runs in the nightcap, including three with a homer in the first inning. Tony Perez had four hits for the Reds and homered in succession with Tommy Helms in the second inning. Johnny Bench also had a homer for the Reds' last run.
Astros 5, Giants 4 at Houston (night game):
The Astros rallied for two runs in the ninth inning with the aid of an error and a wild pitch by Gaylord Perry, to gain a 5-4 victory over the Giants, who were stopped on their seven-game winning streak. Denis Menke started the Astros' rally with an infield hit. When Doug Rader bunted, Perry hit Rader in the back with his throw, the runners winding up at second and third. After an intentional pass to Johnny Edwards, Perry uncorked a wild pitch, allowing Menke to score the tying run. Jack Hiatt followed with a single and Rader crossed the plate with the winning run.
Padres 5, Dodgers 4 at Los Angeles (night game):
Dave Campbell drove in two runs with a bases-loaded single in the ninth inning to give the Padres a 5-4 victory over the Dodgers. The Padres took a 3-2 lead with back-to-back homers by Ivan Murrell and Ed Spiezio in the second, but the Dodgers went ahead with two runs on a bases-loaded single by Manny Mota in the eighth. Bob Barton singled for the Padres in the ninth and stopped at third on a double by Larry Stahl. After an intentional pass to Angel Bravo, Campbell rapped his winning single.
[DH] Mets 4, Expos 1 (night game) / Mets 4, Expos 2 at Montreal (night game):
Jerry Grote collected three doubles in the first game and Bud Harrelson drove in three runs in the second game as the Mets beat the Expos in a twi-night doubleheader, 4-1 and 4-2. A double by Grote in the second inning of the opener produced the Mets' first run and tied the score at 1-1. Singles by Mike Jorgensen and Dave Marshall, around a pass to Cleon Jones, sent the Mets ahead in the fifth and they added two runs in the seventh to clinch the victory for Nolan Ryan. Danny Frisella, who pitched the last 4 1/3 innings in relief of Ray Sadecki, was the winner of the nightcap.
Pirates 14, Phillies 4 at Philadelphia (night game):
Jackie Hernandez and Richie Hebner hit two homers apiece and Willie Stargell smashed a homer and two doubles to lead the Pirates' attack in a 14-4 rout of the Phillies. Hebner and Stargell drove in four runs apiece. Hernandez accounted for three RBIs. The Phillies collected only four hits off Steve Blass, including two-run homers by Deron Johnson and Willie Montanez.
Cubs 12, Cardinals 0 at St. Louis (night game):
The Cubs sent 16 men to bat and scored 10 runs in the seventh inning to overwhelm the Cardinals, 12-0. Bill Hands, who started for the Cubs, was forced to leave the mound after being hit on the right elbow by a line drive in the fourth. Bill Bonham, who relieved, started the Cubs' big inning with a single and beat out an infield hit on his second trip to the plate. Glenn Beckert also had two of the Cubs' eight hits in their scoring outburst.
