Today's scores and summaries:

[DH] Red Sox 3, Orioles 2 (day game) / Red Sox 10, Orioles 2 at Boston (night game):
Luis Aparicio and Gary Peters shared honors in the day game and Sonny Siebert was the standout in the night game as the Red Sox defeated the Orioles, 3-2 and 10-2. Aparicio had four hits and a walk in a perfect day at the plate in the sunshine contest and drove in the winning run in the 10th inning. After the veteran shortstop scored a run in the seventh and batted in another in the eighth, Peters served up what he said was his only bad pitch of the game -- a hanging slider that Boog Powell smashed for a homer with a man on base to tie the score in the ninth. Billy Conigliaro singled in the 10th and, with one out, Peters sacrificed. The Orioles then walked Joe Lahoud intentionally to bring up Aparicio, who smashed a line drive that Frank Robinson misjudged in right field, the ball going over his head for a single, scoring Conigliaro. In the night game, Siebert not only pitched a six-hitter but knocked in five runs with a homer, double and grounder.

White Sox 4, Angels 3 at Chicago (day game):
The White Sox won their sixth straight game in the club's longest streak since 1967 when Rich McKinney drove in Lee Maye with a two-out single in the 10th inning to beat the Angels, 4-3. Maye, batting for Terry Forster, singled and advanced on a wild pitch by Eddie Fisher. After an intentional pass to Walt Williams, McKinney broke up the game with his single.

Tigers 1, Indians 0 at Detroit (night game):
A run that scored on an error enabled the Tigers to edge the Indians, 1-0, in a duel between Joe Coleman and Steve Hargan. Norm Cash walked in the fourth inning and stopped at second on a single by Gates Brown. Aurelio Rodriguez then forced Al Kaline, who ran for Brown, and when Eddie Leon, trying for a double play, threw wildly to first, Cash scored the game's lone run.

Brewers 5, Twins 0 at Minnesota (day game):
Although tagged for 11 hits, Marty Pattin posted a shutout and beat the Twins for the third straight time this season, pitching the Brewers to a 5-0 victory. Pattin also accounted for the first of the Brewers' two runs in the second inning, drawing a pass with the bases loaded off Jim Perry. The Brewers wound up their scoring in the eighth when Dave May homered, Andy Kosco singled and Roberto Pena also connected for the circuit.

Yankees 4, Senators 0 at New York (day game):
Bobby Murcer smashed two homers and Mel Stottlemyre pitched a four-hitter as the Yankees beat the Senators, 4-0, handing Denny McLain his ninth straight defeat and 14th of the season. With this loss to the Yankees, McLain had the dubious distinction of completing the cycle of defeats by every club.

A's 4, Royals 2 at Oakland (day game):
Mike Epstein drove in three runs with a double and single and Catfish Hunter gained his 11th victory with help from Rollie Fingers as the Athletics stretched their lead in the West division to 11 games by defeating the second-place Royals, 4-2. Hunter and Reggie Jackson singled in the third inning and both scored on Epstein's double. A single by Bert Campaneris, an infield out and Epstein's single added a run in the fifth. Dave Duncan singled and Hunter, who is the majors' best hitting pitcher, tripled to produce the A's last run in the sixth.

Braves 1, Reds 0 at Atlanta (night game):
Making his 10th start of the season, George Stone gained his first victory when the Braves nipped the Reds, 1-0. The run off Jim McGlothlin scored in the fifth inning when Mike Lum singled and raced home from second on a two-out single by Ralph Garr.

Giants 3, Astros 1 at Houston (night game):
Ron Bryant continued to defy the Giants' jinx in the Astrodome and combined with Steve Hamilton to beat the Astros, 3-1, before 35,025, the largest crowd of the year in Houston. Bryant, who provided his own winning margin with a single in the fourth inning, now had credit for both of the Giants' victories in the Astrodome this season and four of their five victories under the dome over the last three years. Bobby Bonds started the Giants' scoring with a homer in the fourth. After two out, a single by Ed Goodson, double by Bernie Williams and intentional pass to Hal Lanier loaded the bases and Bryant then rapped his single to drive in two runs.

[DH] Dodgers 4, Padres 2 (night game) / Dodgers 4, Padres 3 at Los Angeles (night game):
Dick Allen, who had gone hitless in eight times at bat, smashed a homer in the 13th inning to give the Dodgers a 4-3 victory, completing the sweep of a twi-night doubleheader with the Padres. The Dodgers won the first game, 4-2, when Cito Gaston misjudged a fly by Manny Mota in the fifth inning and the ball fell safe for a two-run triple. Willie Davis then singled to score Mota.

Mets 2, Expos 1 at Montreal (night game):
Allowing only three hits, Jerry Koosman pitched the Mets to a 2-1 victory over the Expos. The Mets posted their initial run in the sixth inning when Ken Boswell walked, took third on a single by Jerry Grote and scored as Tim Foli rolled into a double play. Tommie Agee singled in the seventh, stole second and completed the trip home on grounders by Cleon Jones and Ed Kranepool to add what proved to be the winning run.

Pirates 11, Phillies 9 at Philadelphia (day game):
Bill Mazeroski, who started at second base for the first time since May 14, rapped four hits including a homer, to lead the Pirates to an 11-9 victory over the Phillies. Bob Robertson whacked a pair of homers. Mazeroski's round-tripper with a man on base in the fourth inning broke a 4-4 tie. The Pirates then increased their lead to 11-4 before the Phillies rallied for five runs in the ninth inning. Dock Ellis, who emerged with his 12th victory, was lifted after loading the bases on two hits and a walk. Before Giusti ended the inning, Denny Doyle drove in two runs with a single and Tim McCarver batted in three with a homer.

Cubs 5, Cardinals 1 at St. Louis (night game):
Ken Holtzman, who had lost twice to the Cardinals previously this season, turned around with a six-hitter and pitched the Cubs to a 5-1 victory. Don Kessinger led the Cubs' support of Holtzman with four hits, driving in one run, and Ron Santo mashed a homer with two on base.
