Angels 4, Royals 3 at California (night game):
An unearned run with two out in the ninth inning gave the Angels a 4-3 victory over the Royals. Sandy Alomar bunted and was safe when hit by Ted Abernathy's throw. Alomar stole second and continued to third on a throwing error by Dennis Paepke. Billy Cowan then batted for Lloyd Allen and singled to win the game.
[DH] Indians 5, Orioles 4 (night game) / Orioles 4, Indians 3 at Cleveland (night game):
Grant Jackson homered in the eighth inning for his first A. L. hit and won his own game as the Orioles notched a 4-3 victory in the nightcap of a twi-night doubleheader after losing the opener to the Indians, 5-4. The Indians kayoed Mike Cuellar in the seventh inning of the first game when Graig Nettles hit a two-run homer to tie the score at 4-4. With Pete Richert on the mound for the Orioles in the ninth, Chuck Hinton walked and gave way to Fred Stanley. When Vada Pinson bunted, Richert threw wildly on an attempted forceout, allowing Stanley to reach third and Pinson second. Nettles was passed intentionally. Tom Dukes relieved and, on his first pitch, Roy Foster hit a sacrifice fly to drive in the winning run.
Red Sox 6, Tigers 4 at Detroit (night game):
A two-run homer by George Scott in the fourth inning and three-run smash by Carl Yastrzemski in the sixth powered the Red Sox to a 6-4 victory over the Tigers. Bill Freehan homered with a man on base for the Tigers in third, but Scott's blow tied the score and Yastrzemski's homer broke the deadlock.
[DH] White Sox 8, Brewers 5 (night game) / White Sox 8, Brewers 3 at Milwaukee (night game):
The White Sox broke out of their four-game losing streak by defeating the Brewers in a twi-night doubleheader, 8-5 and 8-3. Bill Melton homered in each game. The White Sox snapped a 5-5 tie in the seventh inning of the lidlifter when Mike Andrews walked, Tom Egan delivered a pinch-single and Rich McKinney rapped a pinch-double. Egan remained in the game and homered with a man on base in the ninth. In the nightcap, Melton's homer broke a 2-2 deadlock in the seventh and the White Sox went on to add another run on a single by Rick Reichardt and double by Carlos May. McKinney then iced the decision with a three-run homer in the eighth.
Twins 10, A's 4 at Oakland (night game):
Rich Reese batted in four runs and Rod Carew drove in three to pace the Twins' attack in a 10-4 victory over the Athletics. The Twins opened their scoring with five runs in the second inning, two counting on a homer by Reese and two on a double by Carew.
Senators 2, Yankees 1 at Washington (night game):
Denny McLain was able to end his personal nine-game losing streak when the Senators rallied for two runs in the ninth inning to defeat the Yankees, 2-1. McLain was wrapped in a scoreless duel with Mel Stottlemyre until Roy White homered for the Yankees in the ninth. Lenny Randle doubled with one out in the Senators' half and took third on an infield hit by Frank Howard. After Don Mincher fanned, Bernie Allen singled to tie the score and Larry Biittner followed with a single to plate the the winning run.
Cubs 10, Dodgers 5 at Chicago (day game):
Successive four-run outbursts in the sixth and seventh innings enabled the Cubs to defeat the Dodgers, 10-5. In the sixth, after one run scored on doubles by Hector Torres and Billy Williams, Ron Santo walked and Joe Pepitone pounded a homer. Brock Davis singled in the seventh, Torres was safe on an error and Paul Popovich homered for three runs to kayo Claude Osteen. Williams hit reliever Jose Pena's first pitch for another homer.
Braves 6, Expos 5 at Montreal (night game):
Ron Herbel, relieving with two men on base and one out in the ninth inning, induced Bob Bailey to ground into a double play to save the Braves' 6-5 victory over the Expos. The Braves scored two runs in the first, one on a single by Mike Lum. Zoilo Versalles doubled a pair across in the fourth. Lum and Earl Williams provided two more runs with homers in the eighth.
Mets 4, Pirates 0 at New York (day game):
With 50,399 in stands, the Mets posted a 4-0 victory over the Pirates to move within two games of the Eastern division leaders. Nolan Ryan pitched the first seven innings and allowed six hits before tiring in the 90-degree heat. Danny Frisella gave up one hit in the last two frames. Ed Kranepool homered off Steve Blass in the second inning and also contributed one of the Mets' four singles when they scored two runs in the sixth. Ryan tripled and Tommie Agee singled for the last tally in the seventh.
Phillies 7, Reds 4 at Philadelphia (night game):
Willie Montanez homered with two men on base in the eighth inning to lift the Phillies to a 7-4 victory over the Reds. A walk to Denny Doyle, forceout by Larry Bowa and singles by Tim McCarver and Deron Johnson tied the score at 4-4 in the eighth before Montanez connected for his circuit clout.
Padres 2, Giants 1 at San Diego (night game):
Nate Colbert homered after a double by Larry Stahl in the sixth inning to carry the Padres to a 2-1 victory over the Giants. Ken Henderson homered for the Giants' run in the second. Colbert's blow enabled Steve Arlin to gain his first victory since June 2 and pinned Gaylord Perry with his fifth defeat in a row since May 30.
