Today's scores and summaries:
Royals 9, Angels 4 at California (night game):
The Royals made it 2-3-4 in scoring to gain a 9-4 victory over the Angels. Amos Otis homered with a man on base for two runs in the first inning. Three scored in the fourth on a walk to Bobby Floyd, single by Dick Drago, double by Paul Schaal and single by Joe Keough. The Royals then wrapped it up with four runs in the ninth, Amos Otis hitting a single for his third RBI.
Indians 3, Orioles 2 at Cleveland (night game):
Vada Pinson drew the collar against Jim Palmer in four trips, but came to bat against reliever Eddie Watt in the ninth and smashed a homer to give the Indians a 3-2 victory over the Orioles. Pinson's blow enabled Ed Farmer to receive credit for his first major league victory as reliever for Sam McDowell. Frank Robinson homered for the Orioles, who held a 2-0 lead before the Indians tied the score in the eighth on a bases-loaded double by Frank Baker.
Red Sox 8, Tigers 7 at Detroit (night game):
The Red Sox gained their seventh straight victory when Rico Petrocelli homered with two men on base in the ninth inning to beat the Tigers, 8-7. Luis Aparicio was hit by a pitch, Reggie Smith singled and Carl Yastrzemski struck out before Petrocelli came through with his game-winning poke.
White Sox 6, Brewers 4 at Milwaukee (night game):
Bill Melton was stopped on his streak of homers in four consecutive games, but the White Sox third baseman singled and doubled, driving in two runs, to help beat the Brewers, 6-4. Rich Morales had a homer for the White Sox, while Walt Williams whacked a single, double and triple.
Senators 3, Yankees 1 at Washington (night game):
Jim Shellenback, whose only triumphs this season have come in complete-game performances against the Yankees, did it for the third time, pitching the Senators to a 3-1 victory. Frank Howard had three hits for the Nats and scored twice, both times on singles by Don Mincher.
Braves 7, Expos 3 at Montreal (day game):
With two out, the Braves scored four runs in the ninth inning to defeat the Expos, 7-3. Sonny Jackson walked and, after a sacrifice by Zoilo Versalles and infield out by Hal King, scored on a single by Felix Millan to break a 3-3 tie. Hank Aaron drew a pass as a pinch-hitter. Ralph Garr tripled to drive in two runs and Mike Lum doubled to add the final tally.
Pirates 3, Mets 0 at New York (day game):
Dock Ellis, who allowed only two hits in five innings, gained his 10th straight victory and 13th of the season when the Pirates defeated the Mets, 3-0. The game was interrupted three times by thunderstorms. Ellis was removed after the second delay and the Pirates used three relievers thereafter.
Reds 5, Phillies 1 at Philadelphia (night game):
Jim McGlothlin yielded a homer by Willie Montanez in the second inning, but then gave up only three more hits and pitched the Reds to a 5-1 victory over the Phillies. Singles by George Foster, Johnny Bench, Tony Perez and Bernie Carbo produced two runs and put the Reds ahead in the fourth. Doubles by McGlothlin, Dave Concepcion and Pete Rose figured in the other scoring.
Dodgers 2, Padres 1 at San Diego (night game):
A misjudged line drive that went for a run-scoring double enabled the Dodgers to defeat the Padres, 2-1. In the fifth inning, Maury Wills walked, stole second and crossed the plate on a two-out single by Dick Allen to tie the score at 1-1. Wes Parker then hit a liner to left field and the ball sailed over Leron Lee's head, allowing Allen to score. Lee had a chance to make amends in the ninth, but hit into a game-ending double play after Larry Stahl tripled and Nate Colbert was hit by a pitch.
Giants 8, Cardinals 7 at San Francisco (day game):
After blowing a 6-2 lead, the Giants came back with two runs in the sixth inning to defeat the Cardinals, 8-7. The Giants' first six runs counted in the second, two scoring on a single by Bobby Bonds and two on a double by Tito Fuentes. The Cardinals rallied to tie the score with the aid of homers by Joe Torre and Lou Brock. The Giants then broke away in the sixth when Hal Lanier, Fuentes and Ken Henderson singled for one run. Fuentes was nailed trying to go to third on Henderson's hit, but Bonds doubled to drive in what proved to be the deciding marker.
