Today's scores and summaries:
Yankees 6, Red Sox 0 at Boston (night game):
The seven-game winning streak of the Red Sox was stopped by Stan Bahnsen, who pitched the Yankees to a 6-0 victory. The Yankees scored the only run they needed when Horace Clarke singled and Bobby Murcer doubled in the first inning. A single by Ron Blomberg and doubles by Thurman Munson and Danny Cater added two runs in the sixth. Munson wrapped up the scoring by hitting a homer with two men on base in the ninth inning.
Angels 1, A's 0 at California (night game):
Rickey Clark pitched a two-hitter and Ken McMullen drove in a run with a single in the ninth inning to give the Angels a 1-0 victory over the Athletics. Mickey Rivers drew a pass in the ninth and when Tony Gonzalez bunted, both runners were safe on a bobble by Blue Moon Odom. After John Stephenson flied out, Jim Spencer was walked intentionally to load the bases for McMullen's hit.
Senators 6, Indians 3 at Cleveland (night game):
Dick Billings homered with two men on base in the second inning and Don Mincher connected for the circuit with one aboard in the eighth to carry the Senators to a 6-3 victory over the Indians.
Tigers 3, Orioles 1 at Detroit (night game):
The batting of Aurelio Rodriguez and Tony Taylor enabled the Tigers to defeat the Orioles, 3-1, behind the five-hit pitching of Mickey Lolich. Rodriguez singled in the sixth inning and scored on a double by Taylor. Rodriguez and Taylor hit doubles for another run in the eighth. Then, after advancing to third on a long fly by Al Kaline, Taylor counted on a wild pitch.
White Sox 2, Royals 1 at Kansas City (night game):
A throwing error by Bobby Knoop paved the way for two unearned runs in the seventh inning and allowed the White Sox to defeat the Royals, 2-1. With runners on first and third and two out, Tom Egan grounded to Knoop, who threw low to second as Rick Reichardt crossed the plate with the tying run. Bill Butler then walked both Rich Morales and Mike Andrews to force in Carlos May with the winning run for the White Sox.
Brewers 5, Twins 0 at Milwaukee (night game):
Posting his fourth shutout of the season, Bill Parsons scattered six hits and pitched the Brewers to a 5-0 victory over the Twins. Dave May had three hits for the Brewers, including a homer.
Pirates 5, Cubs 1 at Chicago (day game):
Homers by Bob Robertson and Gene Alley provided the principal support for Bob Moose, who pitched the Pirates to a 5-1 victory over the Cubs. Robertson connected in the fourth inning and, after Milt May singled, Alley also hit for the circuit.
Astros 3, Reds 2 at Houston (night game):
The ability to bunt played a big role as the Astros edged the Reds, 3-2. In the second inning, after Doug Rader tripled, Jim Wynn laid down a bunt and beat it out for a hit as Rader scored. Wynn swung away and homered in the fifth. After the Reds tied the score, Roger Metzger bunted safely for the Astros in the eighth. Joe Morgan also bunted for a sacrifice. Alter an intentional pass to Cesar Cedeno, Bob Watson singled to drive in the deciding run.
[DH] Expos 4, Phillies 2 (night game) / Phillies 8, Expos 4 at Montreal (night game):
Getting four-hit pitching from Dan McGinn, the Expos won the first game of a twi-night doubleheader, 4-2, but the relief work of Woodie Fryman, who allowed only two hits in the seven innings, enabled the Phillies to cop the nightcap. 8-4. McGinn, who recently returned from Winnipeg (International), gained his first victory of the season for the Expos. Dave McDonald, Expos' rookie first baseman, batted in two runs with a sacrifice fly and his first major league homer. In the nightcap, Deron Johnson, who had three hits, doubled in the fifth inning and scored on a single by John Vukovich to break a 4-4 tie.
Braves 3, Mets 2 at New York (night game):
Earl Williams broke a tie with a homer in the eighth inning to give the Braves a 3-2 victory over the Mets. Ron Reed, who pitched for the Braves, gave up 10 hits in the first five frames but then choked off the Mets completely, retiring the last 13 batters in succession.
Dodgers 9, Padres 2 at San Diego (night game):
Doyle Alexander, making his second start since being recalled from Spokane (Pacific Coast), gained his first major league victory when the Dodgers defeated the Padres, 9-2. Bill Buckner drove in five runs with a homer and three singles. Willie Crawford also contributed a homer to the Dodger attack.
Cardinals 7, Giants 2 at San Francisco (night game):
Bob Gibson returned to the winning column for the first time since May 14 by pitching the Cardinals to a 7-2 victory over the Giants. The ace righthander, who recently came off the disabled list, beat the Giants for the ninth straight time in a string that started on May 6, 1969. Matty Alou and Jose Cruz each hit a homer and a sacrifice fly for the Cardinals.
