Today's scores and summaries:

[DH] Orioles 6, Senators 2 (night game) / Senators 3, Orioles 2 at Baltimore (night game):
The Orioles smashed three homers in the first inning and cruised to a 6-2 victory in the opener of a twi-night doubleheader, but a wild throw by Dick Hall in the seventh inning enabled the Senators to win the nightcap, 3-2. Don Buford, Brooks Robinson and Merv Rettenmund hit Orioles' homers in the first game, Brooks' blow coming after Frank Robinson was safe on an error. In the nightcap, Lenny Randle singled for the Senators in the seventh, leading to the removal of Grant Jackson in favor of Hall. After a single by Dave Nelson sent Randle to third, Toby Harrah hit a chopper to Hall, whose throw to the plate hit the dirt and bounced past catcher Elrod Hendricks, allowing Randle to score.

A's 9, White Sox 4 at Chicago (night game):
A six-run outburst in the fifth inning provided the Athletics with a 9-4 victory over the White Sox. A double by Angel Mangual and singles by Joe Rudi and Reggie Jackson produced the first run. When Jay Johnstone bobbled the ball in center field, Rudi and Jackson moved up an extra base. Rudi beat the throw home on a grounder by Tommy Davis, who was safe at first. An infield out by Sal Bando scored Jackson. A double by Dave Duncan and singles by Larry Brown and Dick Green followed, each driving in one run.

Red Sox 3, Indians 2 at Cleveland (night game):
An unearned run that scored on a wild throw enabled the Red Sox to defeat the Indians, 3-2. A homer by Vada Pinson in the first inning and run-scoring single by Graig Nettles in the third gave the Indians a 2-0 lead before Reggie Smith hit for the circuit for the Red Sox in the fifth. Buddy Hunter walked in the sixth and scored on a triple by John Kennedy, who also crossed the plate when Jack Heidemann threw wildly on the relay from the outfield. Gary Peters, making his first relief appearance for the Red Sox, pitched the last three innings to preserve the victory for Sonny Siebert.

Tigers 12, Yankees 7 at Detroit (night game):
Norm Cash clouted a pair of three-run homers to supply the Tigers' principal power in a 12-7 victory over the Yankees. Cash's first smash of the game capped a seven-run outburst in the second inning. The veteran first baseman hit his other homer in the fourth. Ed Brinkman batted in three runs for the Bengals with a triple and single.

Royals 1, Brewers 0 at Milwaukee (night game):
A single by Amos Otis, who collected three of the Royals' four hits, led to the run that beat the Brewers, 1-0, in a duel between Dick Drago and Marty Pattin. Paul Schaal walked in the fourth inning, took third on Otis' hit and scored on a sacrifice fly by Cookie Rojas.

Angels 7, Twins 5 at Minnesota (night game):
A two-run homer by Ken McMullen and two-run pinch-single by Ken Berry in the eighth inning brought the Angels a 7-5 victory over the Twins. The Angels were trailing, 5-3, when John Stephenson doubled to start the rally and McMullen tied the score with his homer. Tony Conigliaro and Sandy Alomar followed with singles, but Conigliaro was thrown out trying to score on a pinch-single by Billy Cowan. Alomar and Cowan advanced on the play at the plate and both then scored when Berry rapped his single, batting for Mickey Rivers.

Braves 5, Phillies 2 at Atlanta (night game):
Cecil Upshaw, relieving his cousin, George Stone, retired Deron Johnson with the bases loaded and two out in the ninth inning to save the Braves' 5-2 victory over the Phillies. Johnson had homered in the fifth inning to tie the score at 2-2. The Braves broke the deadlock with a two-run double by Mike Lum in their half and added an insurance run in the sixth when Sonny Jackson singled and Zoilo Versalles doubled.

Cubs 3, Dodgers 1 at Los Angeles (night game):
Three unearned runs following an error by Maury Wills enabled the Cubs to break the Dodgers' five-game winning streak, 3-1. With one out in the third inning, Don Kessinger was safe on Wills' boot. Glenn Beckert followed with a single and Billy Williams hit a sacrifice fly to score Kessinger. Ron Santo doubled to drive in Beckert and Brock Davis singled to score Santo.

Expos 5, Mets 1 at New York (night game):
Jerry Koosman, who pitched only one inning and later was placed on the disabled list, was the loser when the Expos defeated the Mets, 5-1. Koosman gave up two runs on a single by Ron Hunt, triple by Ron Woods and sacrifice fly by Rusty Staub. Bill Stoneman, who pitched a six-hitter for the Expos, scored two subsequent runs after drawing walks in the fourth and sixth innings.

Pirates 5, Reds 2 at Pittsburgh (night game):
Roberto Clemente tripled in the sixth inning for the 2,800th hit of his career as the Pirates defeated the Reds, 5-2. After his triple, Clemente scored on a sacrifice fly by Richie Hebner to break a 1-1 tie. The Pirates tacked on three runs for their winning margin in the eighth. Al Oliver batted in two tallies with a triple and crossed the plate himself on a grounder by Manny Sanguillen. Dock Ellis gained his 12th straight victory, but the righthander was forced to quit the mound after seven innings because of a swelling shinbone resulting from being hit on the left leg by a batted ball earlier in the game.

Astros 5, Giants 2 at San Francisco (night game):
The Astros stepped off to a three-run lead in the first inning and defeated the Giants, 5-2. Joe Morgan singled, Cesar Cedeno doubled and Bob Watson brought them home with a single to startthe scoring. After Denis Menke forced Watson, Doug Rader walked and Jim Wynn singled to add the other tally. Jack Billingham, who has never lost to the Giants in his career, beat them for the fourth time with the help of George Culver.
