Today's scores and summaries:

Orioles 7, Senators 3 at Baltimore (night game):
Brooks Robinson smashed a three-run homer in the fifth inning for the 2,500th hit of his major league career to mark the Orioles' 7-3 victory over the Senators. Merv Rettenmund also homered with two aboard in the first inning. Mike Cuellar, showing no effects of a neck strain suffered in an auto accident July 5, posted his 11th straight victory.

A's 4, White Sox 2 at Chicago (day game):
Chuck Dobson posted his eighth straight victory on a five-hit performance as the Athletics defeated the White Sox, 4-2. The A's scored all their runs in the second inning. Tommy Davis was safe on an error and crossed the plate on singles by Sal Bando and Dave Duncan. Larry Brown, who finished the game with four hits, doubled to drive in Bando. A sacrifice fly by Dick Green scored Duncan and, after Dobson grounded out, Angel Mangual singled to admit Brown. Bill Melton and Mike Andrews homered for the White Sox.

Red Sox 5, Indians 3 at Cleveland (night game):
Bob Montgomery, who entered the game in the seventh inning after Duane Josephson re-injured his bruised rib, smashed his first major league homer in the ninth to carry the Red Sox to a 5-3 victory over the Indians. The winning drive came with two out after Billy Conigliaro had singled.

Tigers 3, Yankees 1 at Detroit (night game):
Bill Gilbreth, the Tigers' rookie southpaw, pitched his second complete game in three starts, allowed only three hits and beat the Yankees, 3-1. The Tigers reached Steve Kline for two runs in the first inning, one scoring on a double by Willie Horton. Bill Freehan batted in another with a grounder and then accounted for the Tigers' last tally with a homer in the fourth. Thurman Munson hit for the circuit for the Yankees' run in the sixth.

Brewers 2, Royals 1 at Milwaukee (night game):
Taking advantage of two errors, the Brewers scored a pair of unearned runs in the third inning and beat the Royals, 2-1. Ellie Rodriguez was safe on a boot by Freddie Patek to open the stanza and when Marcelino Lopez bunted, Paul Splittorff threw wildly to second base, Rodriguez advancing to third and Lopez taking second on the error. Tommy Harper then singled them home.

Angels 7, Twins 4 at Minnesota (day game):
Tony Gonzalez drove in two runs with his first homer of the season and Sandy Alomar plated a pair with a single to lead the Angels to a 7-4 victory over the Twins. Gonzalez broke a 1-1 tie with his drive in the third inning. Alomar hit his single with the bases loaded in the fourth. Ken McMullen had three hits for the Angels and batted in a run with a single in the seventh.

Cubs 4, Dodgers 2 at Los Angeles (night game):
Completing the sweep of the four-game series, the Cubs defeated the Dodgers, 4-2. Ken Holtzman, pitching with two days of rest, gave up 10 hits, four of them by Willie Davis, but the Dodgers scored only in the first inning. Don Kessinger had four hits for the Cubs and scored three runs. Billy Williams drove in Kessinger each time with a double and a pair of singles.

Phillies 7, Expos 5 at Philadelphia (night game):
Tim McCarver, who remained in the game after being retired as a pinch-hitter in the sixth inning, smashed a three-run homer in the eighth to lift the Phillies to a 7-5 victory over the Expos. Deron Johnson also was a hitting hero for the Phillies, accounting for their first three runs with a homer in the first inning. Johnson doubled in the fourth and scored on a single by Roger Freed and an error. Then, in the eighth, Johnson doubled again, Freed walked and McCarver hit his homer, scoring behind Denny Doyle, who ran for Johnson, and Freed. Bob Bailey homered with two aboard for the Expos in the third inning.

Pirates 7, Reds 1 at Pittsburgh (night game):
With a helping hand from Dave Giusti, Bruce Kison gained his first major league victory when the Pirates defeated the Reds, 7-1. Kison, a 21-year-old righthander, held the Reds scoreless until the eighth inning when two-out singles by Pete Rose and George Foster and walks to Lee May and Tony Perez forced in the Reds' run. Giusti retired Bernie Carbo on a grounder and set down the Reds in the ninth. Bob Robertson hit a two-run homer for the Pirates and Roberto Clemente drove in four runs with a single, double and two infield grounders.

Giants 4, Astros 2 at San Francisco (day game):
Bobby Bonds and Dick Dietz each drove in two runs for the Giants to support the pitching of John Cumberland, who beat the Astros, 4-2, for his fifth straight victory. Bonds singled, stole second and scored on a single by Dietz in the second inning. The Giants' three other runs followed in the third. Chris Speier and Tito Fuentes singled and Willie McCovey, making his first appearance since coming off the disabled list, walked to load the bases. Bonds doubled to drive in two runs. After an intentional pass to Ken Henderson, Dietz singled for the Giants' last tally.
