Today's scores and summaries:
Red Sox 3, Twins 0 at Boston (night game):
Smashing a scoreless duel, Rico Petrocelli hit a homer with two men on base in the 13th inning to give the Red Sox a 3-0 victory over the Twins. Petrocelli's poke came off Stan Williams after Reggie Smith and Carl Yastrzemski drew passes with two out.
Orioles 4, Angels 3 at California (night game):
Pat Dobson helped himself to his eighth straight victory, driving in the deciding run with a single in the seventh inning, as the Orioles edged the Angels, 4-3. Frank Robinson homered with a man on base for the Orioles in the first inning. After the Angels tied the score in the third, the Orioles broke away in the seventh. Davey Johnson singled, took third on a single by Mark Belanger and crossed the plate on a wild pitch by Andy Messersmith. Dobson then hit his single to score Belanger.
Royals 1, Indians 0 at Kansas City (night game):
Although held to only two hits by Sam McDowell, the Royals were able to beat the Indians, 1-0. Dick Drago, who posted his fourth shutout of the season, walked in the sixth inning, took second on a sacrifice by Freddie Patek and scored game's run on a single by Lou Piniella.
Brewers 1, Yankees 0 at New York (day game):
Dave May homered off Mel Stottlemyre in the ninth inning to enable the Brewers to defeat the Yankees, 1-0. The Victory went to Ken Sanders, who pitched the last 2 2/3 innings in relief of Marcelino Lopez.
A's 8, Tigers 7 at Oakland (night game):
A three-run rally in the ninth inning brought the Athletics an 8-7 victory over the Tigers. Rick Monday led off with a homer, but two were out before Mike Epstein drew a pass. Blue Moon Odom ran for Epstein and scored the tying run on a double by Dave Duncan. Dick Green then singled to drive in the winning run.
Senators 8, White Sox 3 at Washington (night game):
After 13 straight batters had been retired, the Senators erupted for six runs in the sixth inning and defeated the White Sox, 8-3. Dave Nelson homered in the first when the Senators scored twice, but Wilbur Wood then mowed them down until kayoed by four straight hits in the sixth. Nelson capped the outburst, driving in the last two runs with a single.
Dodgers 6, Braves 0 at Atlanta (night game):
The Dodgers hit three homers in the fourth inning and defeated the Braves, 6-0, behind the pitching of Claude Osteen. Willie Davis and Dick Allen homered in succession in the Dodgers' power display and, after a single by Willie Crawford, Jim Lefebvre also hit for the circuit.
Cubs 7, Phillies 6 at Chicago (day game):
After falling behind by six runs, the Cubs came storming back to defeat the Phillies, 7-6. Homers by Willie Montanez and Joe Lis helped the Phils to their early lead. The Cubs picked up a counter in the third inning and then exploded for six runs in the fourth. Joe Pepitone ignited the outburst with a homer. Don Kessinger and Glenn Beckert contributed successive triples. Billy Williams singled to score Beckert with the deciding run.
Reds 2, Giants 1 at Cincinnati (night game):
A homer by Lee May in the fourth inning and another by Tony Perez with two out in the ninth provided the Reds with a 2-1 victory over the Giants. A double by Ed Goodson and pinch-single by Al Gallagher accounted for the Giants' run in the eighth.
Mets 9, Astros 4 at Houston (night game):
Getting a lift from the terrific relief pitching of Tug McGraw, who allowed only one hit in six scoreless innings, the Mets ended their six-game losing streak by defeating the Astros, 9-4. The Mets, after falling behind, 4-0, whittled the Astros' lead to 4-3 and then went ahead with two out in the seventh when Tommie Agee singled and Cleon Jones homered. Four more runs in the eighth broke the game wide open and doomed the Astros to their sixth straight setback.
Pirates 4, Padres 3 at Pittsburgh (night game):
Roberto Clemente, after going hitless in seven trips, clouted a homer in the 17th inning to give the Pirates a 4-3 victory over the Padres in the longest game in the N. L. this season. Before Clemente ended the four-hour, 12-minute game, the Pirates rallied three times, twice with homers, to avert defeat. Their first comeback came in the ninth when a walk, a single by Jose Pagan and sacrifice fly by Gene Alley tied the score at 1-1. Ivan Murrell sent the Padres ahead again with a homer in the 13th, but Willie Stargell hit for the circuit in the Pirates' half. After the Padres took a 3-2 lead in the 16th on two singles and a wild pitch, Richie Hebner homered to forge a new deadlock.
[DH] Cardinals 7, Expos 3 (night game) / Expos 6, Cardinals 4 at St. Louis (night game):
The Expos, after losing the opener of a twi-night doubleheader, 7-3, beat the Cardinals for the first time this season in the nightcap, 6-4. Joe Torre batted in three runs and Ted Simmons accounted for two in the Cardinals' victory behind Steve Carlton. Stan Swanson hit his first major league homer for the Expos. The defeat was the Expos' fifth straight at the hands of the Cardinals, but Bill Stoneman rectified matters in the nightcap. The Expos, who were trailing, 2-1, erupted for four runs in the fourth inning. Ron Woods batted in a pair with a bases-loaded single, Rusty Staub added a run with a pinch-single and Bob Bailey hit his second sacrifice fly of the game.
