Today's scores and summaries:

Red Sox 5, White Sox 4 at Boston (night game):
Rico Petrocelli, who hit a homer and double previously in the game, drove in a run with a two-out single in the ninth inning to bring the Red Sox a 5-4 victory over the White Sox. Phil Gagliano walked in the ninth and advanced on a passed ball. After Luis Aparicio struck out and Reggie Smith flied out, Carl Yastrzemski was handed an intentional pass before Petrocelli came to the plate. Carlos May had a perfect night at bat for the White Sox with five straight hits.

Angels 2, Tigers 0 at California (night game):
A two-run double by Tommie Reynolds in the eighth inning enabled the Angels to defeat the Tigers, 2-0, in a duel between Andy Messersmith and Les Cain. Messersmith allowed three hits. Cain gave up seven and was beaten when Ken McMullen and Billy Cowan singled in the eighth and Reynolds sent them home with his double.

Royals 7, Orioles 1 at Kansas City (night game):
The Royals, who had lost to Mike Cuellar six straight times in the expansion club's existence, knocked out the ace lefthander in the third inning and defeated the Orioles, 7-1. The Royals scored four runs in their outburst in the third on singles by Freddie Patek, Paul Schaal and Amos Otis, a double by Cookie Rojas and sacrifice fly by Lou Piniella. Dick Drago held the Orioles to five hits with their run coming on a homer by Elrod Hendricks in the fifth.

Yankees 6, Twins 5 at New York (night game):
The Yankees rallied for five runs in the ninth inning to gain a 6-5 victory over the Twins, who wasted a grand-slam homer by Jim Nettles. Felipe Alou doubled and Jake Gibbs singled for the first run in the Yankee rally to kayo Bert Blyleven. Danny Cater walked and Thurman Munson singled off Tom Hall for the second tally. Stan Williams relieved and gave up a run-scoring single by John Ellis. Alter Ron Perranoski took over as the Twins' fourth pitcher of the inning, Bobby Murcer grounded to Rod Carew, who threw to the plate, but Munson bowled over Phil Roof and was safe when the catcher dropped the ball for an error. Roy White drew an intentional walk and when Ron Swoboda hit a grounder to Carew, Frank Baker, running for Ellis, beat the throw home to score the winning run.

A's 6, Indians 3 at Oakland (night game):
With last-out help from Rollie Fingers, Chuck Dobson gained his ninth straight victory when the Athletics defeated the Indians, 6-3. Dobson hit a sacrifice fly to drive in one of the A's three runs in the second inning. Dobson also singled and scored in the fourth when the A's added two tallies. Mike Epstein homered for their final run in the seventh. The Indians threatened in the ninth when Kurt Bevacqua and Gomer Hodge hit singles, but Fingers retired Chuck Hinton for the final out.

Senators 5, Brewers 1 at Washington (night game):
Although held to only four hits, the Senators converted five of their 10 walks into runs and defeated the Brewers, 5-1. Dick Bosman, who pitched for the Senators, yielded 11 hits but drove in three runs with a bunt single and a double. In the second inning, two walks, a sacrifice and a wild pitch netted the Nats' first run. After another pass, two tallies followed on Bosman's bunt and a single by Dave Nelson. Bosman cracked his double after two walks in the sixth.

Braves 3, Padres 1 at Atlanta (night game):
Hank Aaron smashed a homer after a single by Ralph Garr in the ninth inning to lift the Braves to a 3-1 victory over the Padres behind the three-hit pitching of Ron Reed. Dave Roberts, who was the loser, allowed 10 hits, but until Aaron connected, the Braves' only run was unearned, scoring on an error by Enzo Hernandez in the sixth. Ollie Brown homered for the Padres in the seventh.

Cubs 4, Mets 2 at Chicago (day game):
Pitching before a crowd of 37,270 that sent the Cubs' attendance over the million mark, Fergie Jenkins turned in his 18th complete game of the season and beat the Mets, 4-2, for his 15th victory. The Cubs began their scoring in the second inning when Don Kessinger walked with the bases loaded. Singles by Billy Williams and Ron Santo, around a pass, added a tally in the third. Williams drove in the Cubs' last two runs with a single in the fourth and double in the sixth. Tommie Agee and Ed Kranepool both homered in the sixth to account for the Mets' markers.

Reds 7, Dodgers 1 at Cincinnati (night game):
Tearing a tight game apart, the Reds erupted for five runs in the seventh and defeated the Dodgers, 7-1. With the score tied, 1-1, Tony Perez walked and Johnny Bench and George Foster singled to load the bases. Tommy Helms cleared the sacks with a double. Woody Woodward also doubled, scoring Helms. One out later, Pete Rose hit the Reds' third double of the inning to count Woodward.

Expos 4, Astros 3 at Houston (night game):
The Astros, who were held to one hit by Bill Stoneman in the first eight innings, rallied for three runs to tie the score in the ninth, but the Expos came back with a run in the 10th to gain a 4-3 victory. Two walks and consecutive two-out singles by Denis Menke and Johnny Edwards drove Stoneman from the mound. Mike Marshall relieved and was the winner when the Expos scored in the 10th on a single by Bob Bailey, pass to Ron Fairey and single by John Boccabella.

Pirates 11, Giants 7 at Pittsburgh (night game):
The Pirates scored five unearned runs on two errors by Chris Speier and defeated the Giants, 11-7, in a meeting between the two division leaders. Four of the Pirates' tainted tallies counted in the fourth inning when they took a 6-4 lead. The Giants pulled even in the fifth, but singles by Al Oliver and Manny Sanguillen, a walk, Speier's second error and an infield out produced two runs in the Pirates' half and sent them ahead to stay. Bob Veale was the winner in relief of Steve Blass, who was forced out of the game after being hit on the calf by a batted ball.

Phillies 5, Cardinals 1 at St. Louis (night game):
Chris Short pitched a three-hitter and John Vukovich drove in three runs with two singles and a sacrifice fly as the Phillies defeated the Cardinals, 5-1. Vukovich had batted in only three runs in 37 previous games this season.
