Today's scores and summaries:

White Sox 4, Red Sox 2 at Boston (day game):
The White Sox, who had dropped seven straight games to the Red Sox this season, snapped that losing streak with a 4-2 victory. The White Sox beat Jim Lonborg with three runs in the fifth inning. Singles by Rich McKinney and Bill Melton, together with an error, produced the first tally. Mike Andrews singled for another run and Rich Morales walked with the bases loaded to force in the third counter.

Orioles 4, Royals 0 at Kansas City (night game):
Little-used Dave Leonhard made his first start since July 18, 1969, and pitched the Orioles to a 4-0 victory over the Royals for his first shutout since May 30, 1968. The righthander had pitched only 10 1/3 innings previously this season. The Orioles backed him with homers by Davey Johnson and Merv Rettenmund.

Yankees 13, Twins 4 at New York (day game):
Led by Horace Clarke, who collected four hits including a bases-loaded triple, the Yankees trounced the Twins, 13-4. Fritz Peterson, who was the beneficiary of the Yankees' attack, beat the Twins for only the fourth time in 16 career decisions.

Brewers 2, Senators 0 at Washington (night game):
Skip Lockwood and Ken Sanders combined on a five-hitter and pitched the Brewers to a 2-0 victory over the Senators. Sanders relieved with two men on base and none out in the seventh inning and saved both the game and the shutout. The Brewers counted their initial run in the second on a triple by Ted Kubiak and sacrifice fly by Dave May. Their other run in the seventh was unearned.

Braves 1, Padres 0 at Atlanta (night game):
The Braves were held to only three hits by Tom Phoebus but combined two of them with a walk to beat the Padres, 1-0. With one out in the eighth inning, Hal King drew a pass and Marty Perez singled. Tom Kelley was due to bat next, but Ralph Garr, who had been out of the starting lineup with a stiff neck, stepped in for the Braves' pitcher and singled to drive in George Stone, running for King. Bob Priddy pitched the ninth to complete the shutout.

Mets 5, Cubs 1 at Chicago (day game):
Tom Seaver ended his personal four-game losing streak by pitching the Mets to a 5-1 victory over the Cubs. Bud Harrelson opened the game for the Mets by beating out a bunt and Ken Boswell smashed a homer. Tommie Agee also bunted safely, stole the next two bases and scored on a single by Donn Clendenon. Agee homered on his next two appearances in the third and fifth innings. Chris Cannizzaro hit for the circuit to produce the Cubs' counter.

Dodgers 8, Reds 4 at Cincinnati (night game):
The Dodgers staked Al Downing to a five-run lead in the first inning and the lefthander went on to defeat the Reds, 8-4. The Dodgers combined five hits, including a double by Dick Allen, with an error to make their fast start.

Astros 8, Expos 2 at Houston (night game):
The wildness of Ernie McAnally enabled the Astros to score four runs in the first inning en route to an 8-2 victory over the Expos. McAnally walked four batters to force in the first run and then, with two out, Jesus Alou cleared the bases with a double. McAnally allowed only one more hit before going out for a pinch-batter in the seventh. The Astros fell on Claude Raymond for four extra runs in the eighth.

Giants 8, Pirates 7 at Pittsburgh (day game):
Ken Henderson led off the 10th inning with his second triple of the game and scored on a single by Jimmy Rosario to give the Giants an 8-7 victory over the Pirates. The Giants jumped on Dock Ellis for six runs in the first with their hits including Henderson's first triple and doubles by Bobby Bonds and Rosario. Juan Marichal, who started for the Giants, was the victim of three unearned runs in the first but held a 7-3 lead going into the ninth but was knocked out when the Pirates rallied to tie the score.

Cardinals 8, Phillies 0 at St. Louis (night game):
Posting his first shutout of the season, Bob Gibson pitched the Cardinals to an 8-0 victory over the Phillies. The Cards' production included a "triple" by Ted Sizemore with the bases loaded in the seventh inning. Willie Montanez dropped Sizemore's fly in right-center and the hometown scorer gave the Cardinal batter credit for a triple.
