Today's scores and summaries:

Orioles 4, Angels 3 at Baltimore (night game):
Pat Dobson gained his 10th straight victory when the Orioles defeated the Angels, 4-3, on a run-scoring single by Elrod Hendricks with the bases loaded in the ninth inning. Merv Rettenmund singled, Davey Johnson bunted and was safe on a throwing error by Rudy May and Mark Belanger beat out a bunt to fill the sacks before Hendricks came up as the pinch-hitter for Andy Etchebarren.

Royals 6, Indians 4 at Cleveland (night game):
The Royals knocked out Sam McDowell with a three-run outburst in the fifth inning and defeated the Indians, 6-4. A walk to Gail Hopkins and double by Jerry May produced the first run. After a pass to Chuck Harrison and safe bunt by Freddie Patek, Paul Schaal hit a sacrifice fly. Amos Otis walked to reload the sacks and Cookie Rojas singled to drive in another run. The Royals picked up another counter in the sixth and capped their scoring with a homer by Otis in the seventh.

A's 9, Tigers 7 at Detroit (night game):
Catfish Hunter was knocked out in the seventh inning, but before leaving the Athletics' pitcher batted in four runs with a homer, two singles and a grounder to help himself to a 9-7 victory over the Tigers. Sal Bando belted two homers for the A's, while the Tigers had circuit clouts by Aurelio Rodriguez, Ed Brinkman, Kevin Collins and Jim Northrup. Bando hit his first homer of the game with a man on base in the seventh to break a 4-4 tie. After three walks loaded the bases, Hunter drove in one run with a single and another tally counted on a throwing error by Dick McAuliffe.

Yankees 6, Brewers 2 at Milwaukee (night game):
Bobby Murcer, Felipe Alou and Jerry Kenney batted in two runs apiece to account for the Yankees' scoring in a 6-2 victory over the Brewers. Mel Stottlemyre, who became a 10-game winner, held the Brewers to six hits. Both their runs were unearned.

Red Sox 8, Twins 6 at Minnesota (night game):
After exploding for six runs in the third inning, the Red Sox had a battle on their hands before defeating the Twins, 8-6. Bob Montgomery doubled and scored on a single by Ray Culp to start the Red Sox outburst. John Kennedy singled and Reggie Smith hit a three-run homer. After Rico Petrocelli walked, George Scott also connected for the circuit. The Red Sox added what proved to be the deciding run in the sixth on a pass to Scott, single by Joe Lahoud and sacrifice fly by Montgomery.

Braves 5, Dodgers 3 at Los Angeles (night game):
Earl Williams hit homers his first two times at bat, driving in three runs, to lead the Braves to a 5-3 victory over the Dodgers. Felix Millan had a hand in the Braves' two subsequent runs, scoring one in the fifth and batting the other home in the eighth.

Cardinals 6, Expos 2 at Montreal (night game):
The Cardinals scored four runs in the fourth inning, helped along by three errors, and defeated the Expos, 6-2. The Redbirds put together a walk to Luis Melendez, double by Joe Torre and singles by Ted Sizemore, Dal Maxvill and Chuck Taylor, plus a wild throw by Dan McGinn and two boots by Jim Fairey on hits to left field.

Astros 5, Mets 1 at New York (night game):
Don Wilson, who allowed only three hits, overcame a siege of wildness in the fourth inning and pitched the Astros to a 5-1 victory over the Mets. Roger Metzger doubled and Jim Wynn homered for the Astros' first two runs in the third. Wilson walked four batters to force in the Mets' run with one out in the fourth but regained his control and retired Bob Aspromonte on a foul and Duffy Dyer on a grounder. The Astros knocked out Nolan Ryan in the fifth and iced the decision with three runs on a walk, an error and singles by Cesar Cedeno, Doug Rader and Denis Menke.

Phillies 4, Cubs 3 at Philadelphia (night game):
A homer by Don Money in the eighth inning enabled the Phillies to bank a 4-3 victory over the Cubs. Money's drive put the Phillies ahead, 4-2. The Cubs rallied for a run with two out in the ninth on a double by Chris Cannizzaro and single by Brock Davis, but Billy Wilson replaced Ken Reynolds and ended the threat by forcing Ernie Banks to pop up for the final out.

Pirates 4, Padres 0 at San Diego (night game):
Bruce Kison, the Pirates' 21-year-old rookie righthander, pitched a two-hitter and posted his first major league shutout, defeating the Padres, 4-0. The Pirates gave Kison the only run he needed when Willie Stargell singled, Richie Hebner doubled and Milt May hit a sacrifice fly in the second inning. Stargell singled ahead of a homer by Hebner in the third. Not to be outdone by Hebner, Stargell homered for the last run in the fifth.

Reds 3, Giants 2 at San Francisco (night game):
Pete Rose smashed a homer to tie the score in the eighth inning and the Reds then added another run without the benefit of a hit to defeat the Giants, 3-2. John Cumberland, who gave up Rose's rap, walked Hal McRae before being removed. Don McMahon struck out Lee May but passed Tony Perez and Johnny Bench to load the bases. George Foster, formerly with the Giants, followed with a sacrifice fly for the winning run.
