[DH] White Sox 6, Senators 5 (day game) / Senators 5, White Sox 3 at Chicago (day game):
The White Sox came from behind to win the first game of a doubleheader, 6-5, in 10 innings, setting an example for the Senators, who rallied to win the second game, 5-3. The White Sox, who trailed in the opener, 3-0 and 5-2, pulled into a tie in the eighth inning. Jay Johnstone, who drove in the second run of the rally with a single, showed alert baserunning to score the tying tally. With the bases loaded, Luis Alvarado grounded to Dave Nelson, who forced Ed Herrmann at the plate. Johnstone, advancing from second, continued home and scored when catcher Dick Billings threw to first in an unsuccessful attempt to complete the double play. In the 10th, Rick Reichardt singled and Johnstone drove in the winning run with a triple. Frank Howard had four hits, including a homer, for the Senators. In the nightcap, the Senators wiped out a 3-0 deficit and then scored the winning pair in the ninth inning on a single by Del Unser, pass to Don Mincher and double by Howard.

Royals 6, Indians 1 at Cleveland (day game):
Jim York, the Royals' rookie righthander, not only pitched eight innings of one-hit relief but also smashed a three-run homer in a 6-1 victory over the Indians. York took over after Bill Butler walked the first three batters in the second inning. Alan Foster grounded into a forceout, a run scoring, but York retired the next two batters and held the Indians completely in cheek the rest of the way, except for a single by Graig Nettles in the fifth.

In the ninth, Reggie Smith doubled and, after a one-out pass to Rico Petrocelli, scored the go-ahead run on a single by Scott. Joe Lahoud then tripled to drive in two extra counters.

Dodgers 2, Braves 1 at Los Angeles (night game):

Jim Lefebvre homered for the Dodgers in the fifth and Hank Aaron tied the score with a homer for the Braves in the sixth. Tom Haller walked as a Dodger pinch-hitter in the 12th and gave way to Bill Russell. Duke Sims also drew a pass. After a sacrifice by Manny Mota, Maury Wills grounded to Felix Millan, whose throw home bounced in front of the plate and skidded past catcher Earl Williams, allowing Russell to score the winning run.

[DH] Cardinals 8, Expos 7 (night game) / Cardinals 9, Expos 3 at Montreal (night game):
After battling 14 innings to win the first game, 8-7, the Cardinals had an easier time taking the second game, 9-3, to complete the sweep of a twi-night doubleheader with the Expos. Joe Torre came out of the twinbill with five hits in seven trips, including two homers, and seven RBIs. He drew five walks, four intentional. In the opener, the Cardinals won in the 14th on a single by Jose Cruz, sacrifice by Matty Alou and single by Ted Simmons following a pass to Torre. Pirates 4, Padres 3 at San Diego (day game):
The Pirates built up a 4-0 lead and then withstood a ninth-inning rally by the Padres to emerge with a 4-3 victory. The Padres had been shut out three straight games and had failed to score in 37 consecutive innings before their rally. Enzo Hernandez walked in the ninth and Leron Lee doubled to kayo Steve Blass. Dave Giusti retired Larry Stahl, but Nate Colbert hit a sacrifice fly to end the Padres' drouth. Ollie Brown followed with a two-run homer before Ed Spiezio grounded out.
