Today's scores and summaries:
Twins 2, Red Sox 1 at Minnesota (night game):
A sacrifice fly by Jim Holt in the ninth inning scored Rich Reese and gave the Twins a 2-1 victory over the Red Sox. Reese led off with a triple, forcing the Red Sox to issue intentional passes to Leo Cardenas and Jim Nettles to load the bases. Sonny Siebert then retired George Mitterwald on a short fly, but Holt batted for Jim Kaat and smashed a long fly to center field.
Cubs 5, Expos 2 at Montreal (night game):
The Cubs bunched five hits for three runs in the sixth inning to defeat the Expos, 5-2, behind the five-hit pitching of Milt Pappas. Don Kessinger singled, reached second on a wild pickoff throw by Steve Renko and crossed the plate on a single by Glenn Beckert to tie the score at 2-2. Jim Hickman and Ron Santo hit singles to drive in Beckert with the go-ahead run. After an infield hit by Brock Davis, Johnny Callison added an extra tally with a sacrifice fly.
Cardinals 4, Mets 0 at New York (night game):
With Bob Gibson pitching his second straight five-hit shutout, the Cardinals defeated the Mets, 4-0. Joe Torre drove in two runs with a double in the first inning to give Gibson an early lead over Ray Sadecki. Gibson tripled and scored on a bunt single by Lou Brock in the second. Matty Alou homered off Ron Taylor for the final run in the ninth.
Astros 7, Phillies 4 at Philadelphia (night game):
After letting victory slip away in the 10th inning, the Astros came back with three runs in the 15th to defeat the Phillies, 7-4. In the 10th, Cesar Cedeno batted in Joe Morgan with a double and scored himself on a single by Doug Rader to put the Astros ahead, 4-2, but a homer by Willie Montanez, his second of the game, and a pass to Ron Stone with the bases loaded produced the tying pair for the Phillies in their half. Two were out in the 15th when Cedeno singled and reached third on Stone's muff of a pickoff throw by Darrell Brandon. Rader followed with a tie-breaking double. Denis Menke then walked and Jesus Alou drove in two extra runs with a double.
